Bunga was with a doubt my favourite Captain in West Coast history, I loved Glass and Woosha but Bunga is an exceptional leader and really great human. Fantastic clubman, had all the time in the world for fans, had no problem pulling players into line, gave a huge amount of his time to guys who were struggling off-field and led by example on field.

Handing over the reigns at 32 is all class as well, great long term vision for the leadership group. I'd have loved to see him Captain until he retires, but doing the team thing sets a great example for the club.

I don't see how it's doing the team thing though 🤔 Doing the team thing is carrying on the way things are for another season, it's working.

If he was playing average and it was time for a change, then sure, the team thing would be to step down...

But he's been AA the past 2 seasons, and bloody should've been captain as well. He's playing career best footy. I don't get it.

Career high disposals, effective disposals, disposal efficiency, rebound 50's, 1%'s, metres gained, intercepts and ranking points in 2019.

Apart from Hurn himself wanting to free himself up a bit, i don't see any sense in him handing over the reigns a year earlier than he should be. Other than overseeing his successors first year.

Other than overseeing his successors first year.

That’s the point. It’s not like he’s going to play worse just because he’s not captain anymore. It’s about building continuity and preparing the next captain while there’s still some experience on deck.

JK on Fox Sports News now was asked if, given it’s a player’s vote, anybody is campaigning to be the new captain.

“Yeah, Tom Hickey. Tom Hickey has been campaigning. He’s going around, taking the first year boys to lunch. He’s campaigning hard.”

People frothing over Oscar like everyone did over Duggan circa 2015-2017 before they realized he isn't in our best 15 players.

Also before he lost his spot in the team to whacko Jacko Nelson of all people.
Nelson rules.

Age should not be a factor. Shuey should get it. He hardly played any games (6) in the first two years of his career. He could realistically play for another 5 years - contracted for another 3 anyway. Could play as a very dangerous half forward/small forward towards the end.

If Hurn's body wasn't showing signs of wear and Shuey was a little bit younger I would have liked another year of Hurn's captaincy. As it stands I think it will suit Hurn and the team well. Hurn can afford to be a bit more selfish and focus on his physical and mental rehab.

Shuey is the perfect choice for the next 3 or so years. I think Kelly is a good chance to be captain after that. Perhaps someone younger. Regardless it gives us time to find the best option.

If Nic Nat's body wasn't so unreliable the last few years, I think he would have been an equally good candidate. That being said, we're lucky to have Shuey waiting in the wings. He'll do great.

Hurn was elite of the first half of this season, then got injured and wasn't that great in the 2nd half of last year. I feel like injury and wear and tear definitely played a part in this decision. Shuey should be the new captain. He is the heart and soul of our midfield

I think a lot of people forget about, or are ignorant to the added level of work required by the Captain.

On field leadership is but one of the aspects of the Captaincy.

Bunga can do without the extra meetings, media work, official AFL photo ops and so forth.

If you don't have a succession plan, people start to fester in their non-physical roles...they become too static with respect to the growth in their leadership skills.

The timing is perfect. Bunga mentoring Shuey while being able to spend more time on his own preparation leaves a vacuum behind Shuey that other guys such as Yeo and Sheppard can aspire to fill. For instance, they may be more inclined to speak up when Shuey isn't around (eg. behind the scenes in training circles etc.). In turn, there is room for the younger players to aspire to similar albeit lesser leadership roles.

This process fosters future leadership growth among the whole team. "If you're not constantly improving, you'll fall behind" (every AFL coach EVERY off season).

Shuey also has a 2 year-old child.

That said, I suspect he'll get the role and deservedly so.

You know what this means. It's time for an 'Is Oscar Allen already our best player?' thread.

It was "Duggan already our best player" - statement, not question - and it appears the irony is still lost on Dark Sharts.

He’s been a terrific captain, terrifically unlucky not to be All Aus captain the last few years as well.

With some players the captaincy is more a hindrance, but ever since he’s become captain he’s really taken his game to the next level.

We will all have our opinions on who the next captain will be- but whoever that turns out to be will have massive shoes to fill. Only one of 3 men right now who can say they captained our club to a flag, and he certainly deserves that honour.

Thanks Bunga!
Unlucky?

They gave it to buddy franklin ffs

Thats not luck thats wilful sabotage.

No disrespect to bud - champion player - not a captains arseh*le but
