How much better do you feel now that the AFL has issued another 'oopsie'?

Alright guys, great news.

The AFL has, yet again, admitted that its umpires made a match costing error- or in this instance two- against our club.

This is about the fifth of them in the last three year period, but not to worry, they've said that we got screwed.

Now, some of us might think that having a free kick differential amongst the bottom of the league every damn year, and a constant stream of umpiring 'errors' that cost us at critical moments demonstrates a pattern that needs to be addressed, and we might well remember literally having a game and ultimately season taken away from us by umpires just refusing to call a goal a goal, but not to worry, because they've thrown their arms up and said 'did I do that?' with a smirk and its kind of low key hilarious to everyone in Victoria.

Our club, who really went in hard on this one by saying that it was not ideal but also really our fault has gotten the runs on the board.

How much better does the AFL's admission of error and absolutely no indication of any change or engagement to make sure it doesn't happen again make you feel?

Heaps, right?

"With 1.44 remaining in the Gold Coast v Adelaide match Rankine should have been awarded a mark," a spokesperson said.

"Subsequently, he was also held in the marking contest, which should have also warranted a free kick. Upon review, the umpires missed it in real time.

This was a mistake': AFL backs review system, Crows loss stands

The score review system would have delivered the correct outcome if the goal umpire had referred Ben Keays' shot, AFL CEO says

The AFL clearly don't care, and beyond clickbait the wider media don't care either. They are getting the outcomes they want.

It's an entertainment industry, nothing more. Don't delude yourself in to thinking the AFL has integrity, a level playing field, or traditional sporting outcomes. Australian Rules Football has leagues that do operate like that. The AFL is not one of them.

We gave up as a club when we accepted good timeslots in compensation for missing finals in 2023 for a blatant error. Something that doesn't give us an on field advantage at all.

That was the time to really push back against the AFL and use all our legal avenues and we blew it to accept a short term cash grab the AFL immediately reversed the next season

What was more concerning was not just the Rankine non-call, but clearly the umpires gave the Suns a great run in the last 5 minutes when the game was on the line.

I don't believe in coincidences...

And for all of the 'well you wouldn't get the game overturned by a court', which is probably true, the real benefit of actually doing something about it was to set the narrative- i.e. that this was happening, and that we wouldn't just cop it any more, so that the next time it happened there would be attention.

The fact that this keeps happening to us is not coincidence. If we want to stop it we need to do something that interrupts the status quo. And when given the opportunity our administrators turned themselves towards something that makes them look better- time slots and crowd dollars- rather than something that actually changes the situation.

Our controlling shareholder admitted that its employees made errors which might have cost us the game, but on the other hand benefitted another club controlled by our controlling shareholder.

When you weigh it all up, given the vital need to grow the business of the other club controlled by our controlling shareholder, it’s a net positive for the overall corporate group.

The answer is maybe quite simple. Each side gets 3 coaches challenges per game. So if a rankine non mark non free is seen by the club, they can activate a warning bell that alerts the umpire so at the very next stoppage in play, the game halts and an umpire review panel looks at the incident and if its a missed free, the play goes back to that point in time and the player gets the free and any play that happened after the initial incident was missed is undone, be it the opposition kicks a goal, the final siren sounds whatever.

That way, the blatant bad call can be addressed there and then making it fair for both sides. The benefit of this also means that as it only applies at the next stoppage, both sides are not at immediate disadvantage. Now lets say a bad call is missed under this system and play goes on and the other side scores a goal and thats the next stoppage where the missed call is reviewed and it turns out the umpire made the right call, then the goal scored by the team counts as if in normal play.

There has to be a way of redressing this shit at the time as more than just 4 points rides on games, player bonuses, coaching tenure, sponsorships etc are all riding on results.

Maybe they could just give us a loyalty card to get stamped? After the next apology we get one free without even having to be screwed over first?

Answer is less umpires. Two to do half the ground each. And umpire together all year. So we get consistency between decisions

Yeah..feels like it. But there has to be a change to the rules that allos sides at that point in time to make a limited number of challenges. Cricket has it, basketball has it so why not footy too.

I prefer the good old days when that umpire parnell was it? who was a western bulldogs supporter and he awarded something like 17 free kicks to 1 against us and the afl said nothing to see here as they were all there.
