Hobart stadium business case

The AFL is trying to do two things.
1. Protect their investment. The Tassie team is going to cost the AFL millions to bring on line. They want to make sure every possibility is there for it to not turn into the Suns mark 2.
2. They want the team to be successful and supported by the community.
The weather is bad in Tassie during winter, as it's colder than Melbourne. They want as many paying supporters as possible to attend the games, and to attract interstate visitors to the games. A world class stadium with a roof is the best way to get that.

Great, then pay 50% for it. They are ultimatums and it should not be like that. Not much to like here for the Tassie team. Imagine starting a relationship on an ultimatum. It’s unprofessional.

Maybe right but what about when they are ready to do it.
Then they get the football team when they're ready to do it I guess.
Why are the AFL demanding it? It’s not as if there is not an AFL ready ground , hawks and Roos been playing in it for years now.
Belreive Oval is 11,000 seats, and the rest standing room on the hill. It's fine as a temporary solution - and the AFL is fine with them using it temporarily - but there's just no way the club would make enough money to be viable with that little revenue.

As an Eagles fan you saw how bad it was first playing at the WACA, and then how bad it was trying to build Perth stadium. The new Hobart stadium would get stuck in the same political logjam.

"Hey afl we would like 1 football team please. Also could you pay for like half of it?"

Like I said they could at least be reasonable and say we will let you in for a licence in 2029 and we would like to see that you have a new stadium of your choice for the start of the 2035 season. Demanding roofs etc is just ridiculous from the AFL.

Anyway as sad as it is for Tassie I think this will fall over, no state as small as them can afford a 1.5billion plus stadium, christ it would be hard for Victoria to afford it. A 200-300 million dollar upgrade to one of the existing grounds would be the sensible route for the state.

Not sure it will get passed the vote of the people.

I don't believe the AFL really wanted a Tasmanian side to begin with. It's led them along by handing out a "license", but really the whole must have a new roofed stadium thing is just to create an impossibly high bar that makes it too hard for a new Tasmanian team to become a reality.
Bingo

This is correct. They just wanted to be seen to make an "offer" to get the media and public off their backs about it and give Gil one last "win" a send-off. No sane government would have touched the ridiculous demands, the clubs and league just under-estimated how corrupt and insane Tasmanian governments are.

I don't think — in this situation at least — the government is being corrupt or insane.

I think the Government just understands what the team and the stadium symbolises for Tassie and that's why they're fighting for it.

but it's ok the other way for the AFL to put on demands to a state that has a right to be playing in the AFL?
Why do they have a right to be in the AFL?

Maybe the Tasmanian government can ask the locals for donations

So, 500,000 people pay $1000 each to cover the $500,000,000 shortfall? 2/3 of the population couldn't afford it and the myth that all Tasmanians are footy mad is a mainland legend. Local leagues here have been collapsing for a decade or so. Most people I speak to don't care about a team or a stadium.

So what are the chances this team doesn’t end up happening? I’ve heard some people talk like it’s already dead in the water while others have said the afl will blink and allow it to go through without a roof to help with the costs

The AFL doesn't have to blink. They'll get it through parliament and it will be built.

Australian Football League, by definition Tasmania have a right to be in the comp.
Well shit if we are taking sporting competition names ****ing literally.

I guess Darwin gets one and Canberra, **** it Jervis Bay is also “In Australia” so they all deserve teams as well. Do we need to do external territories? Should we include a Norfolk Island team as well?

Guess the NRL has some work to do, they’re only in three states. Ah shit guess the Warriors have to leave the comp as well.

Champions league better change its name, plenty of none champions in that comp.

Can’t wait for Hawaii to join the NFL, NBA, and NHL.

What a ****ing asinine argument.

Why are the worst posters always Collingwood?

I identify as a Glenorchy supporter.

Having grown up in Hobart and seen how stadiums can transform cities by living in 3 other capitals, I can confidently predict that the construction of this stadium would be a game changer for Hobart and the state generally. Furthermore, the alternatives are embarrassing.

Just do it!
