Interesting article. But ... No key injuries plaguing us last year? Except our number 1 key forward and when it mattered our reigning Crimmins medallist.
As well as our Full Back at the start of the year. And our replacement full back (playing career best footy) and one of our other midfielders at the end of the year.......

Edmund is a bland fence sitter devils advocate type but ill give him the benefit of the doubt & say he's playing that role on purpose
Agree. I don't think Edmund was really arguing against us as much as baiting Kornes into making the case for us.

He put up pretty vapid arguments...

"Did they play above themselves?" - you can't play above your maximum.

"Can they handle being the hunted" - is there any real difference between "being the hunted" and "the opposition are trying to beat you in this game"?

One of the dumbest comments that can possibly be made.

Whenever I hear this one in conversation, I always pick them up on it "So, you're saying that they played better than they are capable of playing?"

We had the press all over us during most of the backend of our season last year and still came within an inch of making a prelim despite two crucial players and a developing young midfielder being out. We were already being hunted - this squad can handle it.

I think there is a difference between "being the hunted" and just being the opposition in a particular game. For instance you can tell that in 2025 many sides were very well prepared with a method to beat Collingwood. Probably based on how Hawthorn and Carlton beat them in 2023. So every side studied that, saw what worked and didn't and had built a lot to prepare for it in 2024. I do not think many sides put much effort at all focussing on combating Hawthorn's gamestyle and just expected to win like they had in recent years.

Coaching panels will looking at us as rivals and making sure that they are prepared to beat us as they will expect us to be there in September. Nobody is doing that with Richmond or North Melbourne. I would say nobody is doing it for Gold Coast either but with their talent they could rapidly rise, just depends if Hardwick has a new style of play or is he trying to play like 2017-2020 Richmond? If it's the later it won't work.

Mitchell said when he started that he was looking to the future of where he thought the game was going and what style of play was needed and working on that. And then when other sides look to what we are doing they cannot replicate it as we've been doing it longer and were built for it.
