Speculation Harley Reid [OOC 2026]

Yeah, although I reckon Ralph's just looked at whoever's from WA on the list(Ramsden), thinks we need another ruckman(Reeves, who's not getting a game) and ruck/forward(despite having 4 on the list already...) and put 2 & 2 together.
I didn’t know Sandringham dragons were based in WA that’s good to know!

Is that a joke?

Ours was the second pick in the draft and two in the teens in a strong draft.

We would've been laughed out of Marvel if we took that.

Best case, WCE get 2 in the top ten for Harley in a weak draft this year.

This year's top 10 is touted to be better than 2023, if you follow the draft at all. There's just no clear Harley-level standout.

We had our first pick in this year's draft (top 4 pick I'm sure lol) on the table from get go in live bidding last draft, and the best we got for it was pick 20 or something (took Whitlock)

Yep, we tried the same thing to get Shanahan and had no takers. Luckily he fell into our lap anyway.

Fans would've torn the place down if we gave up our first this year, with a decent WA cohort on the cards, for another tall forward. Reckon Shanahan will be a gun though.

We traded JHF for 2 and 16, I think.

You can't tell me Harley Reid is worth significantly more than the JHF, can you?

Yes, because there's more offers from Vic clubs and he had a significantly better 1st season than JHF.

I'm not across the exact JHF trade details but north were unfortunately bent over, due to Adelaide not being in the picture and Port not having all that much to offer.

The club was also in a complete shambles off-field also which, at the very least, WCE have avoided despite numerous changes.

I wish the Eagles well and hope the kid sticks fat with you and shows some character.

Same.

And I reckon he will regret not doing it if he doesn't. What Buckley did a Brisbane reflected poorly on him and I believe what Jason did to us reflects poorly on him.

Not sure JHF thinks much outside of himself, based on recent showings, tbh...

But some of the trade talk on whaat he is worth is unrealistic. Based on his pre draft and 1.5 years of exposure to him with the attitude and fitness concerns. He aint worth much more than JHF.

Attitude and fitness can be easily fixed and he had a few monster games last year. Nothing JHF did in his first year even came close to what Reid produced in the first Derby and Melbourne game in particular.

Clubs won't care about that stuff when trying to trade for a 2nd year player.

Agree to disagree.

1-I have watched a lot of both JHF and Harley and can't see how Harley's ceiling would be excessively better.

2-I don't believe there is any consensus that this year's draft for available talent is as strong as previous years. Quite the opposite. That's why we got pick 20 for a top 5 pick this year.

Regardless, I wish the Eagles supporters well and hope he stays. I know what it's like to be terrible and feel like every time you go online, you are reading something new negative.

It sucks, I am sure the kids over there love Harley as well. And I am sick of Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood having everything.

Did North even offer pick 2? I thought it was pick 3 + those teens picks?
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I'm sure i heard something about North not wanting to give up Mckercher
Nah, it was Colby and two picks in the teens. We took Will Dawson and Taylor Goad. Both 200cm plus, so still developing, but looking very promising.

All things considered, the second-best player in the draft and 2 top 20 picks on top isn't a bad deal.

The market has been set by what we got for JHF IMHO.

Fair enough, it wasn't an awful deal but we clearly wanted Harley so it is what it is.

Nah, you guys clearly got fleeced in that deal, pick 2+16 essentially?
Harley has at least shown his ability, he wouldnt easily won the rising star last year and he was by far the best first year player while playing inside mid, a role first years are 99.9% of the time not up to playing.
Jhf showed comparatively little compared to what Reid showed

Reid will get a much bigger haul

Its far more than a starting point.

most of us would riot if we offered any more than 2 x Top 10 picks for Reid.

Essendon are on record that they want to bring in talent through the draft, considering that and then blowing our entire hand on a fat, lazy kid who only wants to start fights would be dumb. But its Essendon so who knows.

Reid has the entire 2025 season so prove he's worth a massive trade value, and 3 games in all he's done is lower it.
Pick 1 was offered more than that, his time in the AFL certainly hasn’t lowered his value, if anything it would have gone up.

If it was 5 + 10 I’d wager there would be an f1 on top of it.

Reid has shown far more than JHF did in his first season, and was more hyped out of the draft. Would need to be far more.

Craig Vozzo also mentioned that we will be looking at the player market to bring in young elite talent we have options with our draft hand and not just limit ourselves to the draft.

what utterly stupid club would pay that for Reid.

I know Essendon is dumb, but even that would shock me.

heads would need to be checked.

JHF has nothing to do with Harley Reid.

Port who actually traded for JHF gave up pick 8, pick 43 and a future first (20) and ended up with JHF, Willie Rioli and some future pick swaps. Bandits.

Both Essendon and Richmond have two firsts this year and the ability to trade firsts in 2026 and 2027. It's only Rd 3 but currently Essendon have 2 & 5 and Richmond have 4 & 9. The market is framed by what clubs have available to trade.

And where the player wants to go.

So WC make an 18yo pack his bags to live on the other side of the country against his will and then tell him where he needs to play! Big believer in karma and sort of hope that WC digs their heels in, Reid fulfils his contract and from whatever they get for him their first picks start at 20 something after Tassie hitting the draft.

Also where the aforementioned player agrees to be traded to. Which will be a sticking point for a lot of Victorian clubs

So like every player in the AFL that isn't a F/S or academy selection, then. Won't somebody think of the children!

WC aren't playing hard ball with Harley Reid. He's a second year player that the club would like to re-sign. People need to calm the **** down.

What actions?

Has he? I don't think that had anything to do with stirring the pot. If you're saying his standards weren't up to scratch, then that was the case regardless of his interaction with the Port crowd.
That Ried reached out to Luke Hodge for advice rather than Yeo.

Has he? Absolutely he has.
I'm not at the club to monitor his training, but the fact that he smashed all his PBs for running, and played at a far higher intensity than he has before tells the tale.

Yes, because they know each other already through their management group and he was visiting Brisbane and it was suggested by someone at the club(probably Shuey, as Harley's manager was also his manager when he played...) that he should reach out.

Good for him. May have happened anyway but either way, it wasn't related to him having a bit of banter with Port fans.

I’m telling you that Essendon’s own coach when asked if they were rebuilding said that it’s pretty clear what they’re doing…. But you’re in here arguing that they are in the mode of trading away draft picks, even despite Essendon posters themselves telling you that they are not.
As a coach he hasn't made any improvement in their abilities and win loss. Do you think he is going to say that he is failing as a coach, or that it's out of his hands and they are rebuilding? Self interest is the strongest of motivations.

I'm not saying Essendon should do anything, It wouldn't bother me if they don't win another game for a decade.
I am saying if Harley Reid goes to Essendon and says he wants to go there at the end of the year, they will use those picks in a heartbeat to get him.
Taking a 20 year old kid is rebuilding. It's not like you are trading them out for a 28 year old who won't be there in the next flag window. Harley will be there for 12 or more years.
This next draft isn't as strong as last years by all accounts, and is going to be the most compromised ever with academies and FSs.
Anyone who thinks Essendon are more likely to get two players who are going to be as good as Reid are just being silly.

Lol. I thought he didn't need to get any mentorship from anyone outside the club. You told me that. He was best mates with Yeo and he would be telling him everything he needs to know.
Trying to back peddle by saying they are in the same management group is laughable.
Just stop.
