This is the classic example of the dangers of trading future picks.

Teams overrate their own lists, their ability to spot talent and chances for the following year.

Also, the impatience to wait is telling. Teams don't want to wait another year or two to better their hand.

I really like what the Tigers did last by trading for future picks.

Even if the Cats are premiers, the Tigers have the around the same pick number in a better draft in the first round.

Just imagine if we don't nominate Daicos. GWS will nominate him with the pick that Collingwood gave them.

In that scenario, is there any doubt that this would be the single worst trade of all time?

The only thing that can save them is if they get great value out of whoever they picked at 24 and 30. (Can't remember who they took)

Our pick will be around the same once F/S comes into play, and I can guarantee none on the Geelong board are unhappy about the Max Holmes selection. Looks like he'll be an absolute gun, and has already shown some really good signs at VFL and AFL level. Give him a pre-season or two in the weight room, and some more time to work on his craft, and he's got the ability to be a Wells special

It was definitely a trade that I think both Richmond and Geelong come out happy

That’s my point regarding the trade.

The Pick will be about the same after bid players.

The risk was on the Cats and not the Tigers. If Cats had a bad year, the trade would have went south.

As for Wells, he’s great in the second round but the last first pick that work out was Joel Selwood.

No arguments here, although, SDK looks the goods, and so does Holmes. Unsure about Stephens, as has had some injuries to overcome (much like Valente taken at a similar pick). Clark is a gun, but too many ahead of him and needs to regain confidence after a few shoulder injury issues. Sel was also our last single figure pick, so it does get less likely to pick an out and out star, once you get into that murky late teens area.

All in all, future trades are always a risk, but unlike the Pies, we were bringing in 3 guns and pushing for a flag - so it wasn't as if we were overrating our own internal position.

With that said, it would have been interesting if the pick swap was in reverse, and we traded our first last year for Richmond's first - that would be a whole different scenario, and does speak to the volatility of future swaps - as you outlined

In the NBA future picks can be protected if they fall too far.

Also happens to be the last single digit pick he had. His late 1sts have probably worked out slightly below par maybe but he hasn't exactly had a lot to work with in the early draft

Interesting that he only had one first round pick every 2 years and as you said they were late first round picks.

Real success with Geelong in view is trading out first round picks for solid players (picks are overrated), selecting mature age players in the draft and getting cheap older players via free agency.

Yeah I think we've had a few rd1 misfires but it's basically just Lang, Thurlow, Smedts.

collingwood chose to prioritise the 2020 draft with this trade and subsequent pick upgrades. this got them oliver henry (gone) and finlay macrae (soon gone).

they finished second from the bottom the next year. if they kept their 2021 pick, they would've gotten finn callaghan AND nick daicos. Callaghan looks set to become one of the best players in the AFL this year, and just tore the collingwood midfield a new one.

OOF

Didn't they get Mcinnes and Poulter (long gone) with the picks for Callaghan?

Just shows have plenty of High Picks are no Guarantee's they come Guns

This worked out awfully for the Pies, and terrific for us.

But in their defence, at the time of trade, no one was knocking it.

They had just played in a Prelim and a GF in the previous 2 seasons. They had Daicos coming in the next year which was going to chew up their pick anyway. 2 picks in the 20 for a pick in the teens that was going to get ate up felt fair at the time.

Obviously it went terrifically for us especially with how Finn is tracking.

I was, this was probably the dumbest trade of all time. There was no need to trade the pick until it was known how much value it had which i said at the time
you were certainly proven correct in the end.

Bad short sighted move to try appease supporters, immediate picks to suffice the supporters after horrible trades of Treloar and Stephenson yet the team was clearly trending down at the time and that was before trading out some best 22 players. It was obvious the team was probably going to miss the finals, it was made 10x worse the team finished 2nd last. I would have still been fuming at the trade even if it was pick 8 or 9 let alone pick 2
