Victoria Park stadium cost could hit $5bn - Michael McKenna, Sarah Elks and Mackenzie Scott

If there is a transport upgrade, hopefully it includes a new station to the south of Victoria Park, to the west of where the railway enters the tunnel for the Cross River Rail.

There is a lot of space in the purple rectangle to have a new station.

Then trains can run shuttles between Roma Street Station and this new stadium event station, for passengers who don’t use the lines that go through the Cross River Rail.

Anyone on a line that goes through Cross River Rail would use Exhibition Station.

Having the two separate stations results in people after stadium events splitting into two different directions reducing any sort of crush, in addition to people heading to the bus stations.

To ensure a constant flow of trains, they come in from the north from the rail depot, pick up passengers at the Stadium Event Station, drop them at Roma Street and then circle around to via Central and Fortitude Valley Stations to do it again.

A similar arrangement to the Sydney Olympic Park Train Station and Lidcombe Station, but more central for everyone.

Edit: ideally the new station would have 4 platforms and send an event trains directly to every line (other than those that use Cross River Rail), so then no one actually has to transfer at Roma Street, but it would be more expensive and more coordinating to do every event.

The actual location of the stadium precinct probably needs to be finalised before or in conjunction with planning the appropriate public transport locations. My understanding is that at the moment there are multiple potential locations, all with their pros and cons.

Broadly speaking however I agree that having multiple transport options all equidistant from the precinct makes a lot of sense.

I pushed for a new rail station to the Authority but not sure the government will go that way.
I think it would be better in the long run to save money on not upgrading a yet to be finished Exhibition Station.
Instead, a purpose built up to Olympic standard station that will service Brisbane well into the future.
Hopefully they look at the costs of both and make an informed decision.
Also putting $5+ billion into an area and leaving it lacking in transport would not be a great decision.

On another forum (can't recall which one) someone stated that the station would have to be located at the Normanby Wash Queensland Rail train washing station.
The location on the image below. They stated it all has to do with coming out of the underground tunnel at the Roma Street side and the large number of tracks in that section.
Also, a long straight section of the line at the wash area is needed. Can't remember all their reasons but they seemed knowledgeable in the subject.
That location is very close to the proposed Swimming Arena

The rail lines through Vic Park have changed massively since those photos were taken. From memory, the plan prior to the stadium is to have six lines run through there. It would be a tight squeeze.

Important to keep in mind that the Review actually recommended the stadium be located down on Gilchrist Ave, not at the top of the hill as it is in the artist's impression.

I know the hill might conceivably provide some pretty views, but a 1k walk uphill (particularly in a Qld summer) would not at all be pleasant for many people. The addition of 45,000 others trying to do the same thing at the same time would make it a hell on earth.

I can't see how it could pass any sort of accessibility standards.

What about an elevated monorail through the park to the ground? The locals would love that.

Also, has anybody thought about hovercrafts?

Mono does equal one.
And rail does equal rail.

It just makes sense.

Parliament voted on the Olympics Plan tonight apparently. Unclear whether or not Labor supported it, waiting for Hansard to be released. But apparently Grace Grace, whose electorate Vic Park is in, supported it. She also signed the letter opposing a Vic Park stadium from Save Vic Park lol.

Good old each way Grace. Trying to stop votes leaking to the Coalition or the Greens.

Hypocritical of Grace voting for the plan seeing she was opposed.
However maybe Labor all voted to pass the plan if so, she gets a pass.

No point in Labor opposing it as it involves all venues not just the Victoria Park stadium and we do need to get going on some plan.
Labor may get reelected in 4 years' time so don't want to inherit Olympic games venues well behind in construction.

Just for reference, this is the latest aerial for the area from Nearmaps from March 2025.

Edit: and these plans show how it will look at the end in 2029 when Cross River Rail opens.

Not sure why the ALP would vote to support given they are clearly going to use the broken promise as fodder for the next election. Just as easy now for the LNP to show their opponents up as totally spineless and could cost some inner-city support to the Greens.

As for Grace, I wonder if she carries a legitimate opinion of her own in that head of hers. The worst example of the stereotypical politician in the country I reckon.. which is not an easy achievement

Most people I know or chat to support the Vic park stadium plan....most of us are sick to death of all the Gabba sellouts and can readily see the Gabba is lagging wayyyyy behind all other states so something major had to be done.

I imagine the Labor party are already quite embarrassed of their QSAC proposal....and it has only looked dumber & dumber by the day since! I don't think they'll really want to remind everyone about it at the next state election but who knows.....they were so sucked in by very loud minority groups & let them determine their policies whilst forgetting about everyone else which is ludicrous; I don't know anyone who disputes a new stadium but if you were to review facebook comments on articles most seem against it.

She made a speech saying parts of her community were against the stadium, not actually mentioning herself but when the motion was put "That this House supports the Queensland government’s 2032 Delivery Plan." it was passed unopposed

QSAC was a ploy to force the LNP’s hand - it’s a not-so secret Miles was building Vic Park as well. They tried to get mileage out of the ‘broken promise’, had Miles run his mouth and double down after the announcement and just voted it through anyway. Seems an odd set of political tactics

As i thought no point opposing the bill when in government, they wanted the Olympics.
Victoria Park was just one of 35 odd venues.

True it would almost be an act of sabotage to try & stop it now when we're just about out of time for any other option in time for 2032.

It's just 1 of 35 - but the main one that us locals are invested in as it's the one real long term legacy project we will benefit from over the next 50 years & will be the opening & closing ceremonies for the games too so it will either showcase Brisbane or embarrass it......thankfully it's finally looking like showcasing it!

Be nice if they "tinker" with the capacity a little in the leadup to construction....65k - 70k sounds like a great number although I'm probably getting carried away now & should be thankful that in 2033 I won't still be stuck fighting for tickets to a collapsing 36,000 Gabba....which by then would probably have no roof left and a few stands closed off due to concrete cancer....

I think the government really just wanted a legacy capacity greater than Perth.
The same as Perth wanted one bigger than Adelaide Oval.
That's why the Premier mentioned a few times it is 63k (legacy) when some media questions stated 60k (Olympic).
When completed it will be in 3rd place capacity wise behind MCG 100,024, Stadium Australia 83,500 with Perth 61,266 and Adelaide Oval 55,317 being the next largest.
That places it well in regard to getting the big concerts previously not coming to Brisbane.
