Also, and this may kick off an argument.... but DTS F1 fans arent real F1 fans.
What is the point of smug elitist gatekeeping like this ?

Just be grateful to anyone that is enjoying F1. Who cares how or why they got into the sport ?

totally agree

the new fans has kicked this sport to a new level and it's been great to not be the random weird bloke that liked F1, a huge amount of people I know have gotten into it which is great.

To a new level ??

Its the same F1 its always been, probably LESS exciting than its ever been really.

All that happens now is we go to more shite tracks and we have reality tv following them.

No other way to describe people that view those who only recently found F1 via Netflix as "not real fans".

No different to cricket fans that turn their nose at T20 calling it "not real cricket".
I unequivocally agree with your first sentence.

As a test purist, your second sentence less so haha. I'm thrilled for those that enjoy it, I just don't think the hit and giggle stuff provides the same enjoyment. Would be like only having practice and quali in an F1 weekend but then keeping the race out of the weekend ;)

Youé more than welcome to believe that.... its rubbish, but you're entitled to believe it.

Elitism
demonstrating a superior attitude or behaviour associated with an elite

Your statement
DTS F1 fans arent real F1 fans.

The implication is that the people watching F1 prior to Drive to Survive are superior to those that followed after DTS.

well this is probably not the forum for it, but I'd say labelling an entire format of cricket as "hit and giggle stuff" is a bit elitist.

I mean there was a bit of tongue in cheek with my statement, but given the response you're giving its clearly hit a nerve.

People who watch DTS and think its the real F1, arent watching F1 for the racing... theyre watching it for the contrived drama. Rather than using the word elitist incorrectly, id call myself a racing purist.

Ehhh, I played the game for over 20 years etc. I feel like I've earned the right to have a pretty informed opinion of it.

The technique coming through in test cricket is the reason why there's really very few star batsman left in the test format.

But I digress, as you say, a conversation for a different board.

More like having 3 sprint races and no main race each weekend.

Also helps to work as a gateway for people to start watching the sport.

Sort of

A portion of people will hang on after DTS winds up, but a lot won't.

And what is wrong with that though?

Just like everything there always going to be a mix of fans who consume every single bit of content available right through to the casual observer. There’s literally nothing wrong with being either type of fan.

The major issue in the current climate is the post-Covid event ticket pricing which is an issue which goes beyond F1.

Some people are insecure and need people to know that they were into a particular thing before other people, as if to establish some weird street cred.

See it all the time with music ("I liked them before they were on the radio")

It’s extremely insecure behaviour.

Would you watch a 300km F1 race if it was F3/back end F2 pace, no safety cars and no mandatory pitstops? You don't get a say in how the races turn out.

Aside from myself, the only other one on here I definitely know who would is NSWCROW.

On another note. One of the best things about being an Australian who's a fan of The Corrs is that I can say that I, and "we" as Australians, liked them before anyone else. Even against ******* Irish fans. It's great ammunition to have in the artillery on Facebook.

Extremely childish to go along with insecure. Well done.
Your whole argument is ridiculous.

A real North Melbourne fan, or any club fan for that matter.... doesn't start going to the football because of some gimmick, they go because of a passion for the game and the club. Watch what happens to the vast majority of those new fans when DTS dies a natural death. The whole reason F1 does reality TV series is because there's a whole section of brain dead out there who actually like contrived shows like that.

The sport is no better (or worse) for having them there.

You are painting everyone with the same brush. DTS has 100% brought new fans into the sport who are now watching and attending races who previously weren’t.

The sport is definitely better for bringing new generations of fans into the sport even if it differs from how you personally consume the sport.

A real fan doesn't care or judge how or why other fans are interested in the game.

Let's put it in a way all you simpletons can understand.

If you watch F1 then you're an F1 fan, meaning that it doesn't matter what happens with DTS. The only real change would be that there is now one less avenue for F1 to gain new fans in the future. DTS, like T20 and cricket, is simply an easier way to get into the sport compared to coming in cold.
