I'm probably older than you. I remember when Essendon fans thought anything less than top of the ladder, or a Grand Final appearance was under-achieving. But I suppose 2 decades of failure & coaching disasters would have the effect of lowering fan expectations.

You only have to look at when each club last won a final:

Just keep trying to change the story to suit your agenda BOO. You can't stand the fact that we didn't do as badly as you wanted us to, can you? Your tears taste like milkshakes

You guys got predictably belted, makes absolutely no difference after Bradburying your way into 8th spot on a decidedly low number of wins.

The Blues were shocking this year, but amidst all the losses did manage to belt the emerging Bombers.

Not all doom and gloom.
You must be lost..."When will Carlton arrive sack their next coach" is on a different page dic#head.

I don’t get the point of this post? It’s hard not to be bullish about Essendon’s list and setup. We’re very comfortable where the clubs placed. A club that’s finally moved beyond the supplements era and addressed cultural failings that have held it back. It’s aligned and connected, top down. Critical elements of a successful club. Now we let it unfold over the next 2 years. Blue skies ahead.

Can you re do this but for premierships please?

I’m sure being a Hawks supporter you’ll be happy to point out how many you’ve won.

How many flags have Essendon won since Melbourne? Since St.Kilda?

We were rubbish against the doggies. But overall had a pretty good season :)

Things that need work, notes etc:
- Overhead, uncontested and contested marking skills are horrible in general, and i wouldn't say that unless it was blindingly obvious.
- Players don't lead for marks, nor do they move efficiently enough throughout a whole game to find space to gather possession. This improved this season, but needs a bit of fine tuning.
- Handballing or kicking a pass to a player that is about to be tackled doesn't usually workout very well. Statistics show.
- A lot of people rave about Merrett, Parish, who are good midfielders and kicks of the ball, but i think our best and most poised overall skilled player is Jordan Ridley. It's players with that natural talent that win games.
- Forward line really lacks confidence to take the game on, Watch any Essendon game and you'll see the ball enter our forward fifty many times and the ball is easily intercepted out or our players hesitantly muck about with the ball before someone just decides to have a go for a goal. Players over complicate the entire process.

How come everyone saying we had a soft draw still picked us to finish in the bottom 4? The draw was there for all to see before the season started.

If Essendon only made it because of a soft draw, would West Coast, St Kilda or Fremantle have been more deserving making it with 10 wins and far inferior %?

West Coast finished directly below us on the ladder, they had double up against St Kilda, Collingwood, Adelaide, Fremantle and the Bulldogs.
That’s one top 8 team, Essendon had double ups against two from the top 8.

If they were good enough they would have made it.

Certainly feel the bombers are a little overrated based on ladder position and who they beat (most wins against bottom 5)

however the season WAS a success. I think the goal was to implement Rutten game plan and develop youth. The finals was very lucky as this season was odd in that regard.

Redman, Laverde, Stewart, Hind are now developed defenders with Ridley a genuine gun.

Parish is an absolute gun love watching him play, So him, Draper, Merrett will be great combo with Perkins, Smith, Stringer, Langford, Cox etc

I still feel they lack the FWD firepower at the moment. I mean only Tippa you can rely one for consistent goals. But every young team has holes. But Jones should be CHF for a while and you build around that. Don’t think Peter Wright or Francis are the answer long term and gotta build the FWD line around Stringer, Jones and Tippa.

exciting times ahead for the bombers fans if you ask me. But still feel even if they miss finals next year does not mean they have regressed so just gotta keep the youth developing

Agreed there were only 7 good teams this year. GWS only half a win ahead of us but were battling some pretty significant injuries and of course not getting home games.

Next year all of Richmond, Essendon, StKilda, Carlton, Hawthorn will expect to take significant steps forward. Which means it’s very possible that Essendon get better but miss the 8.

Obviously most Essendon supporters will be hoping for another big leap forward by getting more than 27 out of 69 game from McGrath, Shiel and Caldwell plus improvement from are large contingent of sub 50 gamers.
