Eddie Betts' late hit on Wright

There is no question Betts left the ground and it was his shoulder that connected with Wright's jaw. Let's play "Where's da ball?" whilst we're at it.

Wrong idea & wrong intention IMO... Why hip n shoulder a kid 3 seconds after he's already disposed of the ball?

Firstly, its only gonna result in a free kick down field - which ironically we didn't get! Baffled by this!
Secondly, why try to hit a guy that hard after the ball has cleared knowing that even if its accidental contact, the MRP lotto will always have a look at it? Why risk it?

Eddie should get 1 week for the bump & an extra 1 for being an idiot!
The way I saw it Betts was in a 2 on 1 with three options. Either man up the second man (think it was Steven) which would've just given Wright time and space, split the difference and end up manning no one or pressure Wright and hope for a turnover. Conventional wisdom is to go for Wright.

3 seconds late is a gross exaggeration. Blokes get hit just after disposing a heap of times every game, and if executed correctly it is not illegal. Betts was stupid to jump and turned a run of the mill bump into a broken jaw and a suspension.

Anyway I feel dirty going into bat for a Carlton player so I'll leave it at that, but yeah I personally don't read too much into this incident.

Can we also play "Where's the whistle?" - a down field free would have been nice

Still cannot believe that we didn't get a free kick... It's a friggin joke!

Betts isn't a dog/prick/gutless/whatever, he is actually an okay bloke, but the act was poor. Having seen Garlett and Betts pressure the defender before i was expecting him to wait for Wright to bounce and then charge him looking for the knockdown (pretty sure Garlett did it earlier) and with Betts' pace he could have pressured the receiver as well. He made the choice to go after Wright, he made the choice to leave the ground to do it and made those choices knowing full well Wright was going to dispose of the footy well before he got there (and he had time to make all those choices) 4 down to 3 would be correct, i suspect he will wind up with 2 somehow.

Two things:

There was remonstration from our players. Happened on the Moorabbin wing side of things. I believe there wasn't more due to Milney running into an open goal 5 seconds later.

And we ended up with a goal from that passage of play. Not sure the umpire blowing the whistle didn't think it was worth giving it since we obviously had advantage (and blowing the whistle may have caused our players to stop running). But I dunno if umpires think that in depth.

While we're here, let's talk about Razor's umpiring - not only for that incident, but for the Sippos one. Ignores Sippos clearly being illegally harrassed in front of goal, pays a free the other way, THEN a 50m when none of our players can understand why Sippos isn't getting the free. That results in a quick forward entry to Carlton, and a goal.

This at a crucial point in the match, leading to a 12 point turnaround. If Sippos kicks that goal, it's the steadier, possibly the sealer that saps the last gasp of hope from the Blues. They kick that goal, it gives them the wind up to go for a final flurry that nearly wins them the game.

You could easily mount a case that, that one poor decision very, very, very nearly changed the result of the game.

(Mods, I leave you to decide whether this post stays here or goes to the umpiring thread)

Whilst i am glad he didn't blow the whistle, if he did his job right we would have blown it, called a free for high contact (or late contact whatever) then waved play on advantage.

Does it say something about our youth that we've had two of them sniped off the ball to nullify their influence?
And yet Brogan got the same penalty as Betts despite a direct referral to the tribunal. I guess the message is, er, don't break somebody's jaw if you have to leave the ground to do it.

Has been funny to listen to SEN today in the wake of the suspension being announced. Plenty of Carlton supporters calling in saying how he has only been suspended because of the injury and not because the hit was head high. If it wasn't head high, how did he get a broken jaw you MUPPETS!

Interesting that when Koz clipped Elliott last week the commentators were right into him, & the media spent the weekend hanging him..! Fortunately that maggot got his right whack today, as the commentators on the foxtel replay i viewed this morning, didn't say boo at the time the Betts hit occurred. Don't want to upset Mick do they..!

Eddie Betts is a coward. Completely intentional and to a 19 year old playing in what? His 5th game, and he's not that good a small forward either. He got every bit of what he deserved in 5 weeks even though its reduced but did Wright deserve to get injured and miss weeks?
And I don't want to hear cowards appologies either. "Oh sorry I slogged you in the head" (intentionally) "oh thats ok!" F#$k off!
