Geelong with 24 - Campbell Chesser (Sandringham Dragons/Vic Country)

Midfielder/defender, 186cm, 83kg
1635400292923.png

Chesser is an attacking threat who possesses a penetrating kick and speed to burn. With a background in athletics, he offers something different. As a half back/wing option, he offers the hard two way running that neither Narkle or Clark possessed and Geelong will be after his high work rate, especially without the ball.

He had a difficult 2021 and like his teammate Sinn, Chesser has found it difficult to get on the park, playing just three NAB League games this year because of a knee injury, soft tissue tweaks and soreness. He will also need to work on his upper body strength as he is not the greatest tackler.

He brings versatility with the ability to play both outside midfield and rebounding defender (where he is likely to start there for the Cats). From what I have gleaned from Melbourne based draft watchers, his leadership and character are stand out attributes. He has been boarding at Melbourne Grammar from Wangaratta for the past three years.

Why Geelong? To say their wingers are old is an understatement. Smith, Menangola, Missy Higgins, Duncan, to name a few. The other players with pace are Dangerfield (old), Narkle (out of favour) and Clark (traded). Most importantly, he has the pretty boy smile to take over from the Tomahawk.

Geelong with 25 - Toby Conway (Geelong Falcons)

Ruckman, 205cm, 97kg
1635400397109.png

There is one stand out ruckman in this pool and it is Toby (Andrews may end up better but highly speculative for me to say he will make it). At 205 cm, he is genuine height to ruck and at 97 kg, he will not be far off the right body size. He has added 7kg this year and grown a couple of cm (and he may not be finished growing).

Apart from being a strong tap ruckman, Toby is competitive, good skills and the ability to cover the ground. He recorded 10 or more disposals and more than 20 hit-outs in both the Victorian trial and Challenge matches.

I think I have reached a few spots but I could not run the risk of missing him at 33, besides there are a number of prospects I like that I sense will be there at my 2 early 30’s picks.

Why Geelong? Good blood lines (cousin of the McCartin boys) and local Geelong Falcons talent so will not be impatient with a tall prospect and will be given time to develop in the VFL for Geelong. Also, Geelong have been piss farting around with rucks for a decade. Time to address the need. Playing as a number 1 ruck will allow de Konning to be the KPD and Ratugalea to be the KPF with either providing a chop out.

No pressure Falco but the board is wanting to know what you do with that all important pick 26 (GWS are still crying)

Bargain at that pick. I rate him a lot higher.

It was between Chesser and Alleer for me at 21, good pick.

Write up - Hawks pick 23
Jesse Motlop

I was really torn for this pick. A lot of talent left on the board. (Really hoping our Eagles get another pick in the 20s come the real thing. Or even better, somehow pull a Falco)

After talking with the Hawks board about their wants and desires, I also decided to ask them about their draft wishes ;)
They're after mids and small forwards in a big way, elite skills high on their wish list. I also luuurve me a sweet shimmy and side step.

Once I was told this, it was kind of a no brainer (even though I REALLY wanted another player too)
I'm not as big on Chesser as most and Roberts will be good but I wanted (potentially) better.

Write ups from those in the know. (My quote button doesn't work)

Fron our own Uncle Monocle
Classy small forward who has impressed at Reserves and League for South Fremantle, very composed and skilful player.

Son of Daniel Motlop and looks to have a similar skill set to his dad.

Hard to pass up " pure footballers " and thats the attraction here as Jesse has a footy smarts and silky skills.

Pleased to be able to pick him up this late in the draft as he was much higher on my board.

He has already played WAFL finals in the seniors at South Fremantle and didn't look over awed by the occasion, which I believe is a good sign as each time that he has gone up a grade he has risen to the occasion.

You want the ball in the hands of players who use the ball well and Motlop does this.

Draft Central/Rookie me

South Fremantle/Western Australia | Small Forward/Midfielder
23/11/2003 | 176cm | 74kg
August Ranking:
#29

Snapshot:

A highly skilled small forward with great goal sense, speed and smarts, Motlop comes from good pedigree and can make his presence known in a flash. Another player with ties to the elite level, Motlop is the son of former Port Adelaide and North Melbourne forward Daniel, but is ineligible for father-son selection. He is part of Fremantle’s NGA, though it will be difficult for the Dockers to secure his services via bidding as Metro-based WA prospects can only be matched on with a bid after pick 40. To any club, Motlop offers an exciting mix of speed and skill as a small forward, able to find the goals regularly with clever finishes while also providing forward pressure. An Aquinas College student, he topped the PSA goalkicking charts last year as a bottom-ager and has cracked the WAFL League grade this season, spending more time in midfield against his peers.

Last month:

Motlop played right through the League finals series with South Fremantle, booting a goal in all four games as his Bulldogs brought their premiership defence all the way to the decider. While his highest disposal tally was three, Motlop added a bit of spark and x-factor when required and will likely return to the State Under 19 fold with WA’s combine also to come on October 17.

Knightmare
Height, Weight: 176cm, 75kg
Profile: The son of Daniel Motlop, Jesse -- like his father -- is a talented, one-touch, quick and composed crumbing forward with tricks around goal. How Motlop impacts games most is through his forward pressure, with his tackling and chasing relentless.

Hawks pick 26 - ZAC TAYLOR - 180cm 74 kg - FWD/MID
Another trade to get my target. Really wanted this kid. I think he'll be an absolute ripper. Pretty sure he would have gone higher with more exposure.
Write up to follow shortly.
Damn you - he was seriously considered at 24. Great distributor by foot. I was hoping he’d last to my next pick

Pick swap:

WCE trade: pick 26, pick 76 for the Hawks': pick 45, pick 48
I will be very interested to understand the logic here and to see who you like at those picks. Having trouble seeing it but you may be like Baldric and have a “cunning plan”

Bit of a theme with my picks. Good skills and proper footballers for want of a better term.

You know better than I but he sounds like an absolute ripper from everything I can find/have been told.

Stoked to get him.

Genuinely interested to hear the logic of this decision

If this actually happened on draft night it would require some explaining
I had my reasons as I really wanted Taylor. Falco wanted a couple of picks around that area for a few predicted sliders/specific types of players I presume. (points wise I'm up by the equivalent of pick 66, so its not dramatic)
