Do you have a problem with the afl players getting so little of the overall revenue?

I don't have a problem with it at all.

This isn't the UFC. Players are earning a lot for what they do. It's barely a full time gig during seasons.

NFL doesn’t fund community/junior football.
In fact like most American leagues it piggy backs off the college system.

The AFL does either directly or indirectly.

Very poor faith comparison on your part.
Was coming to say this. None of the leagues he has mentioned prop up community/junior sport.

Surprise to me alot of people making excuses for the suits over the players. OP has a point imo that the players should get a bigger chunk if the suits are getting so much.. and I don't get the arguments of comparing them to other sports pay when AFL revenue would be higher then NRL,NBL and the like so of course the avg wage is already higher. These guys In charge would spend more company money on lunches and flights then they do on grassroots footy

The AFL's revenue is so high because of 100+ years of cutthroat administration snuffing out threats from other sports. Today's players had very little to do with it.

Talk it up mate haha the game sells itself and the players have everything to do with that. I don't really care and I'm not saying they're underpaid at all but I would understand if they get a few more % though it would probably make them play like millionaires even more then currently so meh

I wonder why there aren't a bunch of breakaway leagues also bringing in $1b/year then...

Probably because they would have to pay players even more to leave as they grew up dreaming of playing AFL and the teams involved and even then it would never take over. 100k+ been going to the GF since VFL days so don't make it out like the AFL Administration do anything special. You couldn't screw it up, it was always going to explode with TV.. imo they do their damn best to turn people off with rule changes and suspensions and angry fans still pay up.

Cheers, and same, it wasn't a total loss of a thread tho learnt a few things i wasn't previously aware of, but yep the acceptance of the status quo because of envy or the taking the afl's word for it that it all goes to development was a little surprising to me too, I expected a 50/50 split at least.

How much are "the suits" getting?

You got there eventually. Even when the game doesn't "sell itself", angry fans still pay up because they support their club. Not the players, who come and go.

It's the clubs that are special. And with one glaring exception, the AFL's track record has been very good wrt supporting them and ensuring they remain culturally relevant.

Yeh I think people just don't like to see the players get too much $$ but I think they deserve the biggest chunk by far and fair enough to spending development and all that but if they're so good at growing the game the why aren't GWS and GC stadiums full yet?

Doesn't matter if they come and go. They are there now and some of them are huge ticket sellers, no matter which club.. imagine at your work, If you thought you deserved more and they said it was only because of their management and the workers before you that you get paid so much Anyway.. give me a spell

The median wage isn’t reflective of what the average afl player earns it’s typically a small handful on on 800k plus a few in the 350-700k tier then a bunch of players on minimum contracts and draft wages. I’d be looking to make the bottom line higher long term garentee 200k a year min in the future for a year on the list.

More money needs to go into soft cap expenditure as well

Over 80% of players are on $200k+

How did they get there?

Prrrobably first by being made aware of the game (marketing). Then playing at a local club (grassroots funding). Then by going through development pathways. Then getting drafted and hardly touching the footy for a few years (but still getting paid six figures).

That pretty much sums up my experience, and I doubt I'm alone.

I'm willing to bet a technician at Apple doesn't get a bigger % of revenue now that they sell 200 million iPhones vs when they sold 100 million.
