West Gippsland Latrobe FL

Geelong Football League have rightly treated this format with contempt. It's a joke. Having been involved with clubs within the GFL, O and M and GV, I can tell you the old system remains the preferred choice.

On the other hand, rule a line through Corowa-Rutherglen duo Brendan Eyers and Kade Kuschert for the titles, both injured in the Roos hammering by Yarrawonga.

and i agree flat track bully that it is a terrible format. 20min halves in 3 games for the weekend does not get the best side winning.

not sure hwat was wrong with the full games every month. the best side clearly won and traditions were formed... plus great bus trips

I think you'll find that the reason they dont do that is that players dont want to have to miss club matches every month and the club doesnt want their stars player to do so therefore its a general bye and covered on one weekend

The Ballarat team is as follows:

1, Matty Dwyer - Redan
2, Shane Hutchinson - East
3, Peter Larsen - Bacchus Marsh & Captain
4, Jamie Lobb - Sunbury
5, Ben Jordan - East & VC
6, Chris McGill - Darley
8, Ryan Waight - Redan
9, Matthew Sammut - Sunbury
11, Cameon McCabe - Darley
12, Kade Nicholls - East
13, Chris Banwell - East
14, Nathan Blomely - Redan
15, Allan O'Connor - Sunbury
18, Paul McMahon - Lake Wendouree
19, Daniel Jordan - East
20, Paul Kodorenko - East
21, Matt Cape - Darley
22, Dane Grenfell - Melton
23, Brendan Porter - Melton & VC
24, Tim Little - Sunbury
25, Brett Dickinson - Redan
26, Shane Snibson - Redan
27, Craig Berger - Melton
29, Chris Mammalis - Melton South
30, Jarrod Edwards - Melton

Also included in the squad is Jason Watkins from Melton South, Cam Landry from Lakers and Brick from Sebas. This is a resul of cLeod, Julain Field, & Jarrod Edwards all pulling out late.

A competitive sqaud but will need to play as a team to beat the more fancied leagues.

DIVISION ONE COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL - BFL throws away 7-goal lead
Monday, 15 May 2006

BALLARAT Football League yesterday let slip a golden opportunity to claim its first VCFL Division One Country Championship title in two decades.
The BFL threw away a seven-goal lead to lose the deciding match to Ovens Murray at Albury.

Ovens and Murray booted eight unanswered goals to take the crown as country Victoria's premier league, winning 8.11 (59) to 7.8 (50) in front of a home crowd at Lavington Sports Complex.

BFL coach Peter Freeman was in shock and could hardy find the words to describe how he felt at the game's end.

His team looked certain to break a 20-year drought and secure Ballarat's first division one title since 1986.

With East Point's Dan Jordan dominating at centre half-forward, Ballarat had a seemingly unassailable 45-point lead with the game's opening seven goals.

Injuries to key players proved costly and allowed Ovens and Murray to finish full of running in the shortened match.

The free-flowing style of play Ballarat had displayed in its games broke down without star players Ryan Waight, Matthew Cape, Jason Watkins, Kade Nicholls, Chris McGill, Cameron McCabe and Shane Snibson.

All played major roles in leading Ballarat to comfortable wins over reigning division one premier Goulburn Valley and West Gippsland-Latrobe in the round robin competition on Saturday.

A hamstring strain forced Redan's Waight, a key play-maker through the midfield, to sit out the second half.

Ballarat lost its drive from defence when Darley's Cape (calf) and Melton South's Watkins (shoulder) left the field.

And this came on top of losing East Point's Nicholls (Achilles tendon), Redan's Snibson (soreness) and Darley pair McGill and McCabe (soreness) - all of whom failed to recover from Saturday's games.

"We lost our leg speed and Ovens and Murray took advantage of that," Freeman said.

"There is an element of disappointment there but you can't but be proud and elated in some way at what we have achieved."

Ballarat had been keen to win the championship and bury the bitterness of last year's winless campaign at Geelong.

Jordan was strong on the lead and with his hands as he brought up his fourth goal 15 minutes into the final, the games were of 25-minute halves.

Ballarat's forwards were given an endless supply of ball as Matt Dwyer, Shane Hutchinson, Nathan Blomeley and Ben Jordan controlled possession in the middle.

Ovens and Murray booted five goals in quick succession late in the opening half, giving it the momentum at the break.

Ovens and Murray's running types lifted their tempo and helped their side take the lead.

Ballarat had its chances to claw in front and send the match into what would have been a nail-biting climax, but wayward kicking in attack gave Ovens and Murray glory.

Lake Wendouree's Paul McMahon and Sunbury's Jamie Lobb messed up simple shots for goal, kicking four behinds between them, as Ballarat surged in a last-ditch effort to steal victory.

Melton key forward Brendan Porter was named Ballarat's best player for the carnival.

BALLARAT has clinched the Victorian country title with victory over host league Ovens and Murray at Lavington yesterday.

Ballarat, which was undefeated during the carnival, came from behind to beat O&M by nine points, 8.11 (59) to 7.8 (50).

Coach Richard Bence said Ballarat had overcome a slow start and rallied in the second half.

"We were pretty confident leading in and I felt like we were ready to go but then we fell apart and they got a run on," Bence said.

"At one stage they were about seven goals and we hadn't even kicked one. We were three down at the break but just pegged away."

Ballarat failed to win a game last season and were relegated, but won a late reprieve when Geelong withdrew. Defending champion Goulburn Valley escaped relegation after beating West Gippsland-Latrobe."

Great article from Monday's Border Mail rubbing it into the GVFL over their abysmal showing in the weekends Country Championship. The old adage "a champion team will beat a team of champions" was so true on the weekend emphasised by the great performances by the O&M and Ballarat leagues.

Where is the trophy Eric?

OVENS and Murray league chairman Greg Claney has given arch-rival Goulburn Valley the benefit of the doubt after the Ash-Wilson Trophy failed to make the trip to Lavington for the Victorian Country Championships.
The GV has held the trophy since 2003 before the O and M won it back with a 55-point thrashing of the GV at the LPO on Saturday night.

But the trophy stayed in Shepparton and couldn't be presented to the O and M after the match.

When we get it back from Shepparton it will be nice to get our hands on it again, Claney said.

Its failed to make the bus.

I think they have just forgotten.

Asked if he was giving the GV the benefit of the doubt, Claney said: As always.

I dont think they would arrogantly leave it behind, he said.

We heard early in the night the trophy had not made the trip.

We called off any presentation that may have been required.

When asked about the absent trophy, Goulburn Valley general Eric Bott replied, tongue in cheek: Surely they dont expect me to give up the trophy that easily do they?

In all honesty Ill have to wear this one, because it completely slipped my mind, he said.

Ill make sure I drive up and make a special presentation, but I can see this becoming one of those classic stories.

This trophy is pretty important to us all now, its building a great tradition, but theyll have to fight us for it back.

Claney paid tribute to the O and M players and coaching staff for finally mastering the round robin format by going through the carnival undefeated against West Gippsland-Latrobe, GV and Ballarat in the final game following an unforgettable fightback from 45 points in arrears.

It was a great effort in a fantastic match, Claney said.

I couldnt believe we could come back from seven goals down.

I think the character showed.

Anyone who doubts the quality of the people who put their hands up for inter-league needs to take a good hard look.

To come back the way they did showed tremendous inner strength.

The GV played West Gippsland-Latrobe yesterday in a battle to avoid the embarrassing slide from country champions to relegation in 12 months.

GV scraped home by 13 points after West Gippsland-Latrobe trailed by only one point mid-way in the last half.
