The one thing in this case that always puzzles me (maybe i missed this) is the time the FM said she took her drive to look for WT. Has the FM never said the time she went for the drive? Has she said she is unclear of the time? What has she said? besides that she went for the drive? Im just curious about what she said. I dont understand why no one ever mentions what she said about the time (not about what she did on the drive).

She said she returned to 48 Benaroon in time to go inside and get her phone, just before FF returned at 10:33. So working backwards, she left around 10:27.

The police theory doesn't align with this though. I honestly think she doesn't know. I will quote an interesting post I read in the Peter Falconio (in relation to Joanne Lees' jumbled memories) thread recently. ms finch can delete if not happy about it.

I have been rereading a lot on this case over the last few days to try to find information that might be relevant to another case. In the intervening years since I last read this, I have had a traumatic experience that I thought might shed light on Joanne Lees’ apparently confusing and inconsistent evidence for anyone who is interested in the impact it can have.

My experience was nowhere near as traumatic as hers, but I did have trauma issues with my memory that, as I reread the books, seemed to have some parallels with hers, and may provide some insight.

WARNING: Suicide

I was at my place with a paramedic friend discussing my concern for a another friend’s mental health issues and what I could do to help when I received a series of concerning text messages that led me to believe he was about to do something. I went into full blown panic mode and we called the police and raced off to his house. Unfortunately we and the police were too late and he had hanged himself.

Some of my memories of that period and the aftermath are extremely vivid. I can see details I would never expect to recall on a normal day. These ones are, according to people who were with me, 100% accurate. Other memories are non existent of incomplete - I literally have a complete blank or just see flashes of things. And still others seem real, but I will find out that my details were wrong.

One such example of the latter: At my friend’s house, from the direction we were coming, we arrived and parked on the left and had to cross the road to his place on the right. In my memory we parked, I leapt out of the car, looked both ways and saw a red car and crossed the road hurriedly. According to my paramedic friend (who was driving), I started to leap out of the car as we drove up the hill and he had to slam on the brakes to avoid me injuring myself. I then hurled myself across the road without looking and was nearly run over.

An example of incomplete memory: I recall when my paramedic friend was with me trying to get in to the shed, and I have flashes of the door of the house and the shed. But I couldn’t tell you when he joined me or how many times I ran between the house and the shed.

I remember when his housemate appeared - I know he was wearing long trousers and a top, but I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about them. I remember he was holding his phone. What I remember clearly is what I said to him about what was going on, because that is what I was focused on.

I was absolutely convinced as well that I was holding it together well, but according to my paramedic friend I was pretty hysterical when we were at the shed. Then, afterward, I rang my sister at work. I have no memory of this conversation, but according to her I brightly chatted to the receptionist who knew who I was, asked for my sister, apologised profusely for interrupting my sister’s work day and then said, completely matter of factly, “Look, I know you are busy but X has killed himself and I was wondering if you could come over?” Then I hung up the phone leaving my poor sister wondering WTF was going on.

There is heaps more that, if I relayed it, would make you all think I was bananas. The next two days are all like that for me, and I was surrounded by people I felt safe with, supporting me and looking after me. I was not alone, nor amongst strangers, as Joanne was.

It was explained to me by my psychologist that what happened with my memory is normal. Some things will be vivid and accurate, some things will be not there and some of the memories that aren’t there my brain will subconsciously replace with other information, whether that’s because of what I knew or because something imprinted on me and my brain just shoved it in to fill the gap. I won’t even know it has happened. There are also perception issues, especially with time and movement.

I could tell people what had happened afterward, in basic terms, but if someone had asked me for minute details I would not have been able to provide all of them and I would have some of them wrong without even realising it. I remember when I was trying to recount the details of that day, I kept having an argument with myself about whether I went to the shed or the house door first. Each time I tried to piece it together, something popped up that made me think both options were wrong. Depending on what day you asked me, I went to one or the other first.

Joanne, in my view, would no doubt have experienced all this. She was then up for hours and interrogated relentlessly to provide details, in a way that would have placed her under pressure to fill in gaps, and she was expected to be sure of herself. She was never given a psychologist to work through her trauma with.

It makes perfect sense to me that her memories of certain things would be inaccurate, though she would think they were accurate. It also makes sense to me that her memory would have evolved over time as she tried to figure out gaps.

The best example I have is of the fact that she got from the front to the back of the car somehow. I suspect that her true memory is of being in the front then being in the back and her brain simply assumed she crawled through and filled that in. It was only when someone said that couldn’t have happened that she was forced to reassess. The issues with memory also explains why she couldn’t properly identify the dog and why the car description initially was not perfectly accurate.

I don’t think she’s lying at all, is my point. I think this can all be explained by trauma. So I think elements of her evidence may be unreliable, but I’ve also never thought her evidence was necessary for it to be proven to be Murdoch anyway. The evidence she did provide is not contradictory to it being Murdoch and is similar enough to him to be supportive, which is the crucial part. I think the police made mistakes in presenting her initial information as absolutely accurate rather than using words like, “Similar”. It led people to believe she was certain when she probably wasn’t.

Thank you, that is what I wanted to know, what she said. Thank you also for ms finches post, this is the exact reason why I dont believe the FM and FGM are necessarily lying and could answer why their stories dont always add up.

People either accept trauma can affect memory, or they don't. Experts say the effect is real, so internet sleuths can hardly say they know better.

FM knows she drove, but like Joanne Lees, the exact details and timeline are not embedded "true" memories. As you say, that doesn't mean she is lying and the police must have accepted that to some extent, or she would have been under more heat from the outset.

The police think she drove after alerting the neighbour (AMS), but that would mean the FF and FGM have even worse memory trauma (because that was after he had returned). I still don't know why the police have arrived at their version of the timeline.

FF may have been off searching and not have been aware she drove off and FGM may still have been on the porch and not noticed. Not impossible. I think if they were all lying they would have all said she left at this time and got back at this time. They would have their story straight. You would not say you didnt know.

FF and FGM are not on record anywhere being interrogated about the drive. The drive is not mentioned in FF statement or in FGM walkthrough.

While it is plausible that FM does not remember the exact timing of the drive, there are only two possibilities: Either it was before FF returned, or after FF returned.

If it was just before FF returned it makes no sense as William was reportedly "only gone 5 minutes" - so he could not have possibly got as far as the riding school. It would make no sense to look there before searching the FGM property, then the street, then alerting neighbours to search their properties. Why drive off anywhere BEFORE doing this? Not plausible IMO.

If it was after FF returned, then it's almost impossible to fit to the timeline of meeting FF, talking to neighbours, walking to the bus shelter and back as well at driving to BCR all before calling 000. And no neighbours saw FM take the drive out or back, despite them being on the street. It also makes no sense that FM would take FGM car and not the FF car, which would have a better view, and with which William was familiar, and would recognise (after all, he was supposedly 'looking fo Daddys car'). Again, illogical, improbable, implausible.

If something doesn't make sense it probably isn't true.

So how does the drive make sense? It makes sense if it was completed before FF returned, and the purpose of the drive was NOT to look for William, but to remove William from the property. Plenty of time for the drive between 9.37 and 10.30. During this time, there is no verifiable alibi for the FM. No neighbours were in the street. No cars were seen coming and going.

That's what it comes down to really, leaving only one other alternative. That is that William wandered off into the bush while he was unattended. Perhaps in covering up her negligence of leaving a 3yo unattended for "only 5 minutes", (when it may in fact have been 20minutes), she has inadvertently left herself open to suspicion of covering up a fatal accident.

I keep coming back to my theory on losing things. They are always in the most logical place, which in your haste to find it, you never search thoroughly enough before looking elsewhere.

I was highly critical of TCP in past posts regarding Shadow analysis and direction including suncalc angle. He concluded that the sun position was high in sky around 12 to 1 on a Sumner day because of length of shadows and the shadow direction was almost due south .

Turns out if you run suncalc on 25th Dec at around that time it is short shadow totally south direction exactly as it is on the verandah..funny because I'm aware and argued that Dec rise is most south. It is but the elipse pattern shows it goes high and direct north creating short shadow due south right in middle of day

I owe a belated apology..Bang on Mr TCP!!! Take my hat off to you!!! I had to get there with the science you used rather than my mind's eye but now i have and i see Totally concur

It seems that the photos were taken in Summer at around midday not on 12th September at 7.39 or 9.37.

But how is that possible when Police pulled them off the phone she gave them and it was only purchased a couple of months prior? And looking at the people on the deck, there is no way that photo was taken middle of the day in mid-summer in Australia. Looking at the clothing.

Yes but this does not adequately explain the 'drive'.
It also does not explain why no trace of William was ever found off the property, despitae an almost immediate and intensive ground search, and even after 10 years.
The most logical place would be a nearby mine shaft or wombat hole, or creek or ditch. But they were all searched on multiple occasions.

It doesn’t make sense so why are police going with the drive being after FF arrived home. There’s little time to do all of these things as you say.

“No neighbours were in the street. No cars were seen coming and going.”

This also means there were no neighbours to see any other cars arrive or leave (if they did.)

Same reason police pursued the 'lost' theory.
Same reason police the 'paedophile' theory.

It's what they have been led to believe.

None of these make sense logically. Time to concentrate on what does make sense, no matter how distasteful it may seem, and despite the various narratives being pushed without supporting evidence. The actual physical evidence points to something else. IMO.

Does anyone have detail of the 2013 street Xmas party at Kendall? Especially photos if available. Who amongst family attended ?

What date was that party?

I haven't seen a date or photos, and I think only the immediate foster family (FF, FM, William and his sister) has been mentioned as being there.

Chumley's book (below) says both children had their scooters, so from that I've wondered whether it was a daylight event and whether the foster family walked there and back - in which case William might have remembered how to get there on foot; and if the road had been closed off for the street party he might have formed the view the bitumen was a bike path, not a road.

From Chumley's Searching for Spiderman, p. 191:

"The 2013 Christmas street party was held at Millie Jones' house. The Savages were there and so were William and [his sister]. The children both had their scooters."

From 9 News, 20 Aug 2019:

'Paul Savage, 74, told the coroner's inquest into William's disappearance in 2014 he recalled going to a Christmas party where he watched the boy with his foster father.
He said he thought they had a "good bond" because of "how much the little fella followed him."'

I wasn't aware they were. I have always read that Police are alleging the drive happened to dispose of the body before the FF arrived back. If it happened after then he would be implicated as well and their theory is that he is not involved.

I don't doubt that people searching actually tried to find him, but they were then diverted to the bio abduction and then to the fictitious cars and then the pedos.

I'm pretty sure I told you before about the old chap who went missing and despite searches in a wide area, his body was eventually found 12 months or so later only 300mtrs from where he was last seen. Similar with AJ Elfalak, although thankfully he was alive, but only 500mtrs from where he wandered. I think the fact that the Coroner ordered another search years later and then again more recently might indicate that the initial search was not considered thorough enough. How thoroughly can you search in such a difficult terrain?

From media reports of the inquest, police are alleging its after.
Personally, I’m not sure if they really know who was involved as FF had to go to the crime commission and was then accused of lying.

From Daily Mail, 05 Nov 2024 (during the final week of the inquest):

"Mr Craddock told the hearing on Monday that the foster mother had no recollection of the precise time she drove her mother's car from the house after the boy vanished on the morning of September 12, 2014."

The public, SES et al were not diverted at all. William's foster status was kept secret for about 12 months. A small 3YO boy with asthma in strange surroundings could not get far on foot. The public would have been oblivious to the bio family’s existence let alone their previous attempt to keep him.
The ground search continued for days with sniffer dogs reaching the point of exhaustion. Locals who knew the area well searched day and night. The local pony club joined in. It was the weekend - people were available and they all pitched in. Not just from Kendall but also nearby towns. He was wearing brightly coloured clothing. He was simply not anywhere close enough to the house that he might have gone without another person intervening.

I doubt the Police and the Coroner were as sure as you seem to be that the search had been thoroughly conducted, given the additional searches that were subsequently carried out. However, after several years, it would have been a miracle if they had found any evidence of WT in the very specific areas that they re-searched.

Sorry to keep jumping all over the place but it's important. Overington book says the first 4 Photos were quick succession then a gap of 7 minutes to the roar shot.

Ive looked thoroughly at symmetry between them

The photos can be grouped based on symmetry and activity

* The first 3 have W facing FD and both doing drawings..the pink water bottle is upright and the FD is seated right in front of her drawings

* The last two ( including roar shot) W has tuned away from FD. There is a black and also an orange crayon to Ws left identical place..FD has shifted away from her drawings gone closer to the pram ( pulled it a little closer), knocked her pink bottle over. She is playing with something held in her fingers as is W.

* The roar shot shows what they were both playing with ie leaves..I'm inclined to think that between the 3rd and 4th photo they went searching for leaves to draw on or include.

In the 4th photo W has a singlet on, his Spiderman tshirt, his Spiderman suit.( See close up). Yet in the final roar shot he hasn't got the singlet on at all meaning it was removed you can see the stitching on t shirt not there in roar shot

Importance?

If photos times were subject of edit then sequence and time gaps become critical. I think that because no one could specifically see the leaves we wouldn't be able to work out they are there. The interval to their activities is the end of 3rd photo and before next change of position moving crayons and you can see both children holding something in finger ( I think most likely is leaf) if they left no space it's wrong sequence. In any event the extra singlet/ shirt was removed and we were told was never there to start.

I think it's been messed up.

These sorts of mistakes are often what brings people unstuck

The effort you put in Stormbird is so amazing. Thank you.!!!

Do we know if FM sister and kids were at Kendall at Xmas? Perhaps Xmas party was a day or two before

Most days in summer will have same or similar elipse..Xmas day stands out though because the temp was cold snap in the range 16 to 19. Soooo wearing warm clothing would be suitable that day

Do you think he would have been wearing three layers or even two at Christmas time?
