First Crack (David King) criticised the match committee's decision to not replace McCartin in defence with another tall and rely on Blakey as that option

Which I 100% agree with them on

Cox even said in post-match presser that he had made mistakes: "This is my first official game so no doubt I’ve got some things wrong. We’ll have a look at that. We review not only the way the players play but what we do as well."

It's going to be a big year of learning and so long as that's what he does ill be happy. If he continues to make the same mistakes over and over and expect a different result it'll wear thin really quickly.

Rampe and Melican were there. And Hawthorn weren’t stacked with talls until Sicily went forward. I’m not sure Blakey’s role was a major strategic blunder.

Not sending JJ to Will Day, however, was a blooper. Should have happened in Q1 when he was tearing us up, not at half time.

It felt less like we got beaten in the air in defence, and more like we were beaten in the air around the ground, which I think lies with Grundy getting towelled up by Meek, and our forwards (both of whom I thought were actually pretty good) probably needing a third tall for that extra representation down the line and/or when one of them was rucking.

So if there was a tall we were lacking, I think it was actually in the front half. But Cox & co had their right to think that opting for a smaller forward line instead would bring more pressure at ground level. I think if he knew he was going to get such a fizzer of a pressure game from our smalls, he might've replaced one of them with a tall.

Mental application was poor

Yiu forgive r1 blunders with ball use etc

What im worried about is the mentality of this group , they should have been hitting in hard but our contested ball , tackle count was piss poor. Even rowbotton and he normally cracks in regardless of score board.

Concerns for this team

Rampe and Melican were there, as was Blakey but that's it. They didn't replace TMac, so they were a tall defender short.

I have to admit, I don't agree with your posts most of the time Punts, but on this one, we 100% agree, on Friday night we looked mentally shot.
I honestly thought we'd come out breathing fire just to show there were no mental scars, but it was more like the opposite.
So, so disappointed 😞

Were we though? I don’t recall us getting outmarked in defence.

King’s criticism is more that Blakey wasn’t being freed up as a rebounder. But he still led the team in disposals. And Wicks / Florent both have speed to rebound effectively too (and yes, I know, Florent had a shocker).

If anything, I’d have thought Blakey playing on a smaller opponent might make rebound tougher, not easier?

Personally, I think the problem lay elsewhere. We got pummelled at stoppage (again) and Will Day wasn’t shut down early enough.

I think the post-GF blues will be a thing. It's been real for every other club in the same scenario, so it would be arrogant to think it wouldn't be real for us. Especially when we've already lived it in 2023.

But my hope is that it's also a lot to do with the adjustment to life under a new coach, and that if/once the players really buy-in to Cox, our mental application will lift somewhat.

Great.
The handover is working a treat.
I thought that’s what the preseason games were for Coxy.
Fills me with extreme confidence.
Lions by 60 plus points.

IMO it's lazy analysis by the pundits to say that McCartin not in defence was a bad choice against the Hawks.

Hawks did take 12 marks inside 50 to our 5, but 8 of those 12 were to mids and smalls. Guys like Florent and Roberts and Lloyd and the midfielders losing their men and not running hard enough defensively in our back half.

That ain't on our key defenders. (Not saying they were great either, but they were about on par with Hawthorn's defenders IMO.)

But that would be boring. David King & co. can't sell a story of good players just being off the boil and not working hard enough. You can sell a new coach's much-hyped and closely-watched big move as a flop though.

They're just grifters.

He was more talking about Blakey getting dragged deep and taking his rebound away along with we had stuff all intercepts

Wasn’t particular saying we were monstered in the air or anything.

In a presser before the game Cox said he had been Warner’s line coach ever since the Chad arrived.
Probably I’ve missed something because that’s the first time to my knowledge it has been openly acknowledged that Cox was the mids coach.
Anyway Caesar88 has had a bit to say about the mids coaching, and the use of Rowbottom in particular (with which I agree).
So, who is the new mids coach? Spike? More importantly, will that coach change the way we set up and the roles played?
Will he by changing things, in effect, say that Cox was wrong? Cox said that he backed his coaches - but will he back the mids coach changing Cox’s ideas?

Imo cox gave an opportunity to our starting mids to beat them but when they didn't he sent in Jordon.

Re lack of pressure, watching at the ground it looked like the players were preoccupied in maintaining our defensive structure, actively looking around at each other & being a bit unsure of themselves.

I think that will naturally improve throughout the season as it becomes a bit more familiar to them which will also see an increase in pressure.

Read what DKnCo wrote about the Hawks and the Lions after(including up to) round 5 2024...

How long do we think it'll be until we see a Sack Cox thread?

Cox made a blunder last week leaving us one short on defense, but he wasn't one of the ones on the park that couldn't tackle, spoil or mark if their lives depended on it.

In fact it wasn't hard to see his reaction to some of the efforts. It probably took all of his self control not to strangle one or two (or 5) of them. I loved how he sparked up over Wicksy. A bright light on a dull night.

Will he name a non debutant sub or win a game first :p

He's got a tough start here , lot of players not available , changing structures , mentally hurt team.

Might need to make an early statement and example here with a Papley or Florent etc
