Dean Bailey new coach

People are too quick to forget that the best way to bring members in is success, e.g a premiership.

The Board have decided Bailey is the man after an extensive process, I'm inclined to go with their decision.

Poor Mark Reily being the only Melbourne official able to comment on Dean's appointment. Is he contracted for next season, I still want him as an assitant coach

Yeah he's contracted for next year and I also would like Riley to continue as an assistant next year. Sure he may not be the best Head Coach but I liked what I saw from his work at his quarter time, half time and three quarter time addresses during Neitz's 300th game was that he tried to show the boys what they were playing for when he grabbed Neita's jumper.

Seems like a good fella and would have been tough taking over from Neal'es job with the season done and dusted and not the greatest cattle at his disposal

Sexy!!!

Chris Connelly likely to appointed football manager

Apparently Dean Bailey blew the selection panel away and was a runaway winner

Whilst a guy like Hardwick simply was too nervous, not quite ready it would seem

All these things i know for a fact, actually knew last night at about 7.30!:D

please explain

It will be interesting to see if the Dees supporters are applauding such a 'great move' in 12-24 months time.

A definite 'plain wrap' option for mine.

Has a Peter Rhode result written all over it.

Hope you find something nice to spend your saved dollars on.

get your facts right mate, fact was that he was the best candidate, plain and simple, he may not attract a cheque as big as sheedy or someone else but he was the best person for the job

absolutely blew the selection panel away with his knowledge and ideas on the game, if sheedy had of been seen to be the best candidate then he would have been given the job, it wasn't based on money at all

interesting to note that he actually 'applied' for the job, others were approached, you can look at this one of two ways i suppose, but to me it means he is confident in himself and ready to take the next step, i'm all for going for a somewhat no-name if he is the right person, and knowing a lot about the inside process that has occured i am confident in Bailey's ability to lead this club into the future

Good move by the Dees I think. I really don't think Sheedy would really have his heart in his job. Bailey sounds like he will make a good coach and he looks like a tough guy that is able to clean out your list.

It may well turn out to be an inspired move - only time will tell.

We can all speculate as much as we like, but none of us (including the Melbourne heirarchy) will know if his appointment benefits the club or not for some time.

I only make a comment as I recall my feelings when Rhode was made senior coach at Footscray. I HOPED he would have a positive impact, rather than expected that he would.

Perhaps he didn't have the cattle, but history will show that the '03 / '04 seasons were very dark ones in the Bulldogs history.

Good luck to Dean Bailey. Think the Dees made the right move not appointing Sheeds. Think Sheeds was on the rebound and applied for all the wrong reasons. Would have been wrong for both parties.

Wonder how long the Dees are going to stick with this "ex-Bombers only" policy? ;)

Yes Chattanooga only time will tell. That's a fact. The rest is just rubbish.
I was quite against Daniher's appointment all those years ago yet he turned out reasonably successful. 6 finals series is great but in the end Daniher coached Melbourne to more losses than wins so my gut feeling that Daniher was the wrong appointment was not totally wrong nor was it totally correct.
Rhode was a disaster for Western Bulldogs.Melbourne can ill afford more dreadful seasons going forward.Bailey has the reins now and must be given full opportunity to succeed but I will be negative and say if the Dees are still dreadful and going nowhere after two years of Bailey then Melbourne should pay him out and try again.
I barrack for the club not individuals employed by the club.
Give Bailey a full seasons grace next year but my expectations of success start in 2009. I'm sick of waiting for a flag. I understand they are very very hard to come by but I still want to see Melbourne win one some day.
Goodluck to Dean Bailey but if he turns out a dud after 2 seasons then get rid of him quick and try again.

Go Dees

Congratulations Dean, and a good appointment by the MFC

The release of the coaching details came about early because Dean notified Port of his appointment, they then immediately severed ties with him, wishing him all the best in his new position. At Port's training Dean wasn't anywhere to be seen, the media asked the question of Mark Williams as to his whereabouts, hence the story got about.

The Demons then had no option but to make the appointment official, & public.

MELBOURNEfc announces new Coach

News

MELBOURNEfc has today announced that its coach for the next 3 years will be Dean Bailey.
Bailey, age 40, has been assistant coach at Port Adelaide since 2002, during which time Port has played in five final series, including a premiership and two preliminary finals. He was also a development coach at Essendon when it made consecutive Grand Final appearances in 2000 and 2001. He played 53 games for Essendon from 1987-1992, and an additional 60 games with Glenelg 1993-1996.
MELBOURNEfc Chairman Paul Gardner said: "From day one we have been determined, and disciplined, about selecting the best coach for our team and our times. That decision needed to be a very informed one rather than instinctive or emotionally driven.
"The process we established gave us a fantastic short-list, but it was a unanimous Club decision that Dean Bailey will be that coach.
"On what we have observed, heard and discussed, Dean Bailey will help underscore the new beginning for MELBOURNEfc as we prepare to celebrate 2008 as not just as the year we were ‘born’, but the year in which the club is ‘reborn’.
"Dean’s approach to coaching and developing players is contemporary, innovative and exciting.
"He has made an enormous effort to develop himself as a senior coach and has benefited from his time with very successful AFL people such as Kevin Sheedy, Mark Williams, Denis Pagan and Alistair Clarkson, as well successful figures at the Institute of Sport, soccer, and basketball.
"Just as our Club did last year, Dean has also gone out of his way to visit successful clubs in the English Premier League, and to continue with post-graduate studies.
"We are very confident that Dean will work with other key Club staff to make a quick and major contribution to the development of an environment at MELBOURNEfc that gets improved outcomes in rigor, resources, relationships and results.
" It's a major achievement for Dean to become Coach of the original AFL club, about to turn 150, and I trust that all our supporters will see the coming year as the year to truly make sure the heart beats true for the Red and the Blue.
“We had a terrific final five contenders including caretaker coach Mark Riley who remains under contract. The club deeply appreciates Mark’s willingness to take up a caretaker’s role, and his work ethic and enthusiasm has been fantastic.
“The club had originally intended to finalise the appointment with Dean over the weekend and inform other candidates, but after Port Adelaide confronted Dean about his future, we had to fast track the process and secure Dean’s services and talk to all other contenders prior to our announcement today,” said Gardner.
Newly appointed Coach, Dean Bailey said today: "I am absolutely thrilled to get this opportunity. I have worked hard for a long time to get to be a senior coach and to achieve that goal at a club with all the history of MELBOURNEfc is truly a dream come true.
"But for all the wonderful history we will celebrate next year, I am more excited about the future opportunities with a Club that is clearly getting itself out of what has been a challenging period, has some smart and bold ideas, and is committed to getting the results.
"The selection process was extremely professional, and the fact I was able to get from responding to their newspaper advertisement to being on a short list with some of the game's most talented people was an honour in itself, but to get the appointment is fantastic.
"I have been privileged to work under Mark Williams at Port Adelaide and have real regrets about leaving that club when it is on the cusp of more success, but nothing is forever in football and I am pleased the club supports me taking this opportunity.
"There is a solid base to build on from the work done by Neale Daniher and Chris Fagan, but I will be working hard with all the players and key staff to get the club onto a fresh and positive trajectory.
"We will have a strong group of young and talented players capable of playing vigorous, competitive and exciting football. I see this group as being very coach able, and I see myself as a teacher and developer.
"Successful teams see each and every day as an opportunity to improve, to train and prepare professionally, and to understand the game and the role everyone plays in that game. For me and everyone else at the club, opportunities start today, and I look forward to seizing those opportunities," Bailey said.

  • Dean Bailey sounds terriffic and has me very excited about the years to come

I think Melbourne have made the right choice. I rate him over Clarkson, he seems more personable, but with the fire and smarts to go with it.

its nothing like Rohde, he was a caretaker who got the job, Bailey has been chosen from about 15 candidates, totally different

The selection committee has taken a risk and showed itself to be very brave. We all know Melbourne FC has culture problems and I reckon taking the easy option e.g. appointing Connolly or Sheedy would have just contributed to that.

Wonder how long the Dees are going to stick with this "ex-Bombers only" policy? ;)

We'll have to do it with coaches because we rarely ever swap players. Heffernan was the first in god knows how long, and after that debacle I'm sure we won't be taking any more.

From a port point of view, you barstards.

Congratulations to Dean on getting the job.

Melbourne should be congratulated for bringing in a fresh coach.

Dean's brings a lot with him. He has coached in his own right before (something a lot of clubs overlook when appointing a new coach)

Also he has experience at a club that is willing to think outside of the box, and I would expect Dean to bring that to melbourne.

Dean also puts in the hard yards and is more interested in getting the job done than pumping up his own tyres.
