Daniel Merrett Retires

AFTER 14 seasons with the Brisbane Lions, veteran fullback Daniel Merrett has announced his retirement.

The 31-year-old told his teammates on Tuesday afternoon that next week's final round against St Kilda would be his last match.

It will also be Merrett's 200th game – a great achievement for a Queenslander who only turned his hand to the sport as a 16-year-old.

All the best to the Big Sauce on his career, drafted in 2002 as a ruck/forward was thrown into defence when he made his debut 3 years later in 2005.

I read on the Lions board that he was the last squad member of the 3peat.

Didn't think he was around when the 3peat happened but all round a good honest footballer who has had to do it tough. I do believe he has a year or 2 left in him so who knows, we might not have seen the last of him but if we have thumbs up and all the best to him!

Glad he will make 200 games (assuming he plays both games remaining).

He never won a flag, never saw much success. Only ever played a couple of finals.

Went through a lot of tough years and in his retirement video he looks a broken man. He all but admits he maybe could have played on but he isn't really enjoying his footy any more.

A great club man, very loyal and a ripper bloke.

He's a shadow of his former self and the game is heading in a direction where gorilla defenders just aren't as important. Made the most out of his talent and from all reports is an absolute top bloke. All the best to sauce in his retirement even if he is a soulless ranga.
