We made what the entire footy industry has agreed was a horrendous trade, with the club in the turgid state it's been in for a decade, and there's just nothing. No real pressure at all.

I don't think the trade itself has been as horrendous as the way it has been described by some as nauseum on this forum in particular. I do think they should have gotten a bit more. My bigger gripe was trading a future 1 for Lukosius, even if the compromised draft of 2025 means that future 1 isn't worth much.

I would add if you kept Houston and revisited this in 12 months time, the return is most likely a single first round draft pick in an extremely compromised draft, potentially a pick in the 20s once you account for academy and F/S selections.

I think the two biggest factors that led to the trade going through on Port's end was the quality of the 2024 draft class, and the position Houston plays (ie the easiest plug and play position on the field in the modern game).

The trade itself was also a clear indicator that they're looking to the future (2026 and onwards) rather than the now. Which, in and of itself, is fine, but it is incongruent with the club's decision to keep Ken for 2025.

Agree that we seem to have overpaid for Luko. Weirdly i'd probably have been more content if we just gave an F1 for Luko without the surrounding deal, because I get it, we don't develop forwards and have to overpay for them.

As it stands it looks like we've effectively traded Houston and a F1 for pick 13, Luko and Richards, which is really bad.

Going back to holding people accountable, if the 2024 megadraft was so important, it's pretty bullshit that we turned our natural pick in it into 2 guys who aren't best 22 at the moment. But again, the footy media in this country absolutely sucks and the club aren't copping any scrutiny for that at all.

So if the deal wasn't good enough why did we trade him? Dan still had a couple of years left on a contract and we could have waited until next year. Maybe the thinking was that this year's draft was a deep one so we just had to get in at any cost? If Berry, Lukosius and Co come off it will probably have been worth it but we won't know for a couple of years.

In any case I cannot get really enthusiastic about our playing list as I do not think we have the off field personnel to get the best out of it regardless as to who we recruit. Hopefully that will change at the end of 2025.

Timmy Evans did not like Craig Balme either. Timmy was put out when Balme was appointed a ruck coach at Port in our early AFL days.

The 2025 draft is weak/compromised we were better off trading him now argument is very weak imo

Next year Collingwood would've 2025,2026 and 2027 first rounders available. The club spends resources on watching these kids from 16 yo's. The list of players that weren't traded when they wanted then were traded for less the next year is shorter than the list of players that were traded for the same if not more

I think you go on to answer your own question.

Why force him to stay & keep him? I mean, we have a consensus here that we aint winning anything under Hinkley! Half the posters here have either walked away from the club, or havent renewed membership.

Letting him go, and bringing in a bunch of fresh draft picks in a good draft is looking to the future, and not to the "now" under Hinkley.

I am all for it.

I remember talking to Tim when he was Bar Manager at the Port Club and the angst went back to the 1984 grand final when Balme hit Tim before the first bounce.

They have just given Joe Berry the no5 guernsey which was worn by Dan Houston. It was also worn by Tim Evans.

Yeh I've come around to thinking it could work in our favour 12 months down the track. Hopefully we have all been liberated by then.

2027 draft will be compromised due to the Tassie draft concessions.

The team are clearly building a squad who should be at their physical peak from 2026 through 2030.

Had Port kept Houston, no club would be trading multiple first rounders for a half back flanker who turns 29 in their first season with the new club. Despite the relatively poor return Port got for him in the end, I highly doubt they would have gotten anything better in 12 months time.

This isn't a case of a young player requesting a trade whose peak years are ahead of him. His currency was never going to be higher than this off season.

Re-watching the semi final against hawthorn a couple nights ago and seeing the likes of Bergman, Burgoyne, Evans, Jones & Sinn all perform really strongly in the backlines with no Houston, Farrell or Burton makes me confident we will be okay without Dan.
