Cyclone Alfred is moving slowly at approximately 20 kilometres in the last hour. The eye is expected to cross Moreton Island north of Brisbane which places the greater Brisbane area in the high danger zone.

Those of us who are old enough remember Cyclone Tracy which hit Darwin 50 years ago and we remember the destruction caused. Hopefully Alfred is not as damaging as Tracy was.

One station north of Brisbane has already recorded 200 mm of rain.

If you or your loved ones live in or near Brisbane we wish you well. Stay safe and please follow instructions.

Yipes!
Glad I'm not holidaying up there right now.
Think we'll go in the non-cyclonic phase of the year.

We should not forget Northern New South Wales as Alfred is expected to affect the Lismore region later today. Geez, I would not want to live in Lismore as that must be the most natural disaster impacted town in Australia.

At least the residents in the affected areas have had plenty of warning and appear to be well prepared. Not like Cyclone Tracy which took Darwin by surprise. I guess meteorology is a lot more sophisticated these days.

My sister in Robina on GC last night heard a tree come down near her, but couldn't see where it came down until the sun came up this morning. Neighbour next door had a tree land on their room and a bit of the tree also landed on my sister's fence and missed her house by about 8 metres. Tree pierced the neighbours roof in 3 places and water getting in until SES came and cut tree and tarped up the roof. They had over 100mm of rain between 9am yesterday and 9am today.

Her place borders one of Clive Palmer's golf course and from her fence to a fairway has about 30m of trees that go for a few hundred metres, so she is praying when the strongest winds hit, none of those trees land on her house.

My husband's immediate family and extended family all live in QLD, so we are hoping they all survive unscathed.

Cyclone Alfred has been downgraded to a tropical low which means lower wind speed and less potential for destruction. There is still plenty of wind and rain and the potential for widespread flooding. Many thousands of homes without power but thankfully the damage appears to be limited. So far anyway.

The AFL could have got the games in but better to play it safe.
