Roast Cripps - time to go

We are probably weak in trade but the problem is that we have to overpay to get any talent into our side.

Its easy for the northern states as they have been gifted the northern academies to stack their sides with. If I heard correctly, junior footy participation in Qld has now surpassed SA. Also because the northern states are getting stacked with draft concessions, it is also making them appealing to senior players looking to move north to chase success.

Its easy for the big Vic clubs because they can still pillage Ex Vic talent from the northern & western states that want to go home after being early draft picks. You only have to look at Richmond, Geelong and Collingwood's recent success.

SA & WA footy is being left behind and it shows with the long term performances of the 4 AFL clubs.

The Crows changed tack by targeting more SA based talent to prevent the go home factor kicking in. The problem is that the SA talent pool is pretty poor in comparison to other states and the SANFL has little interest in developing junior footy for the AFL.

Regardless of who runs our club, its sobering to think that we could be bottom dwellers for a long while, thanks to the AFL's inequity system.
You make a very good point, that is why interstate clubs should play hard at the trade table. It is very difficult to lure the best players away from Victoria but a lot easier for them to attract interstate talent.

When we have players like Houston, as much as we want to be cooperative because of the go home factor we must stand firm at the trade table.

This is a multi million dollar business so we cant afford to be easy pickings come trade time, the club has sponsors and members to consider as well as the player.

We are at a disadvantage already being an SA club, this is why winning is so important, players need to know if they make the move across the border it's because the club is building for a tilt at a flag, not just pretending like Port.

True.

It's probably just perception and that it feels like fringe players are coming here for opportunity and the players we are losing are best 22.

Well last off season they really only lost Houston to trade whilst gaining Lukosius who is a best 23 player.

I think the doom and gloom is louder this year because people are of the opinion that Bergman and Butters are already out the door, which may eventuate, but right now is simply not the case.

I knew it :( but in all serious have you got any inkling on what might happen with these two?

People thought Bergman was out the door 2 years ago when he put off contract talks until mid season. Then he stayed.

I think Butters will stay. Bergman I'm not sure about, but I know that internally, Port rate Bergman in the same tier of Rozee, Butters and JHF.

Port have the requisite money in their cap to fit both players.

It’s louder because the team is playing way worse and we don’t have a R1 pick.

Rockliff was a big part of a strong midfield that should've made the grand final in 2020 and Motlop was useful at times including playing a key role in the qualifying final win that year. Watts we know didn't work out. It wasn't a disaster, as always with Hinkley it looks like a disaster because opportunities are missed along the way.

Boak, Gray, Dixon, DBJ in their primes.

Wines second half of that year was his Brownlow form.

Rozee, Butters and Houston whilst not elite yet had a foot in the door of being at that level.

SA had favourable Covid rules too compared to the rest.

Most talented list in our AFL era?

But loser mentality had already seeped on the club and that they were too scared to kick pressure goals in finals and lost by two goals.

From what I'm hearing, quite confident Butters stays this year. But the problem for him is next year and that's when it seems more likely that he'll leave.

Bergman, he wants to move into midfield and I get a sense that we are stopping his development in that sense so looks more likely to leave. Can see him being a top centre bounce midfielder

If Butters is to go isn't this year best and hopefully trade with some balls that relying on an AFL generated compo pick?

We can match any offer and force a trade next year because he's a restricted free agent.
