You make a very good point, that is why interstate clubs should play hard at the trade table. It is very difficult to lure the best players away from Victoria but a lot easier for them to attract interstate talent. We are probably weak in trade but the problem is that we have to overpay to get any talent into our side.
Its easy for the northern states as they have been gifted the northern academies to stack their sides with. If I heard correctly, junior footy participation in Qld has now surpassed SA. Also because the northern states are getting stacked with draft concessions, it is also making them appealing to senior players looking to move north to chase success.
Its easy for the big Vic clubs because they can still pillage Ex Vic talent from the northern & western states that want to go home after being early draft picks. You only have to look at Richmond, Geelong and Collingwood's recent success.
SA & WA footy is being left behind and it shows with the long term performances of the 4 AFL clubs.
The Crows changed tack by targeting more SA based talent to prevent the go home factor kicking in. The problem is that the SA talent pool is pretty poor in comparison to other states and the SANFL has little interest in developing junior footy for the AFL.
Regardless of who runs our club, its sobering to think that we could be bottom dwellers for a long while, thanks to the AFL's inequity system.
When we have players like Houston, as much as we want to be cooperative because of the go home factor we must stand firm at the trade table.
This is a multi million dollar business so we cant afford to be easy pickings come trade time, the club has sponsors and members to consider as well as the player.
We are at a disadvantage already being an SA club, this is why winning is so important, players need to know if they make the move across the border it's because the club is building for a tilt at a flag, not just pretending like Port.

but in all serious have you got any inkling on what might happen with these two?
