COVID chaos! WA border threatens entire AFL fixture

That is such a typical non Eagles/Freo WA supporter response. Because this doesn't affect your team. Both WA clubs are at their knees right now financially, we cant afford another season where we play home games interstate, its ridiculous that every other state will allow footy yet we are still following draconian border laws. Both WA clubs need the home game $$$ this year. I suspect the fixture will be redone to allow for border closures, and worst case Eagles/Freo will make up home games at the end of the season, playing mostly away first up, once most of the country has been vaccinated, the borders here wont be so strict.
Pretty simple then, lobby against the Government.

If the clubs came out and condemmed MaoGowan it would be a turning point in his public perception andhe would (likley) flip from his absurd protectionist, eliminist approach to a rational, balanced approach. Instead WCE and Freo have contributed to McGowan's support by staying silent or backing his handling of COVID in the state. They have to lie in the bed they have made here or take a stand.

Serious question here.

WA has been very cautious, “closing” it’s doors to different states during the last 12 months. The economy is going pretty well, with overseas tourism down, but the local tourists boosting the tourist hot spots ( money not exiting to Bali & Thailand ). So things are going well, everyone feels healthy with a positive outlook.

In comparison, how do Victorians feel at the moment ?. How’s their economy, mental health and outlook for the future ?.

Cautious versus lockdown.

Also, please read the article quoted at the start of this thread. It actually says everything is falling into place for the season to start as normal.

I dont live in Victoria. I live in NSW. And our economy is fairly strong and we havent been arseholes locking family and friends away from eachother.

BTW overseas tourists spend WAY more than local tourists. And there is only so many times people will go to Broome or the Margaret River.

Who is no-one? You and your little group of mates?

Maybe you should tell this to Kerry Stokes, he's obviously wasting his money over there.

.

The rise in weekday readers has seen The West hit a major milestone — recording the highest “market reach” of any major masthead in the country with, on average, one-in-five people in this State reading a copy of the newspaper every day.

The figures are even better for cross-platform market reach.

A massive 84 per cent of people in WA read The West Australian newspaper, its website, PerthNow or The Sunday Times in an average month.

The numbers again make West Australian Newspapers the nation’s leader.

Ok HHH, it just shows that me and my mates are totally out of touch with the world.

A lot of them have close friends and relatives in the eastern states, and not once have they espoused an east versus west attitude. Banter about footy teams, sure, but never interstate rivalry as you are suggesting.

Years ago, pretty well everyone grabbed a copy of the West every morning. None of these friends grab a copy or subscribe online. We only see the “scandalous” viewer grabbing headlines, via tv or online ads.

I see the report on subscriber figures being up, damn me, cause I can’t see where the increase is coming from. I must lead a sheltered life !!.

Ignorant and niaive view from an outsider who very obviously has no idea what the lockdowns were like.

Unlike your sheltered mob who seemingly are yet to lose their innocence in the real world, Victorians are resilient and dont live in fear.

Thats irrespective of what you hope happens.

Ignorant & naive, I was asking a question, not making a point. I didn’t know the answer.

Thanks for your input, time to have a Bex and lay down.

Nobody has died in WA at all since the border was locked down. Not a single person.
32 Western Australians have died in 2021 alone from motor vehicle accidents. Why hasn’t Mark McGowan stopped motor transport yet?

Mining is making WA look better than it is

Tourism hotspots are over flowing. Tourism park operators are raking in the dollars, even after the end of the traditional tourist season.

I see it as the tourism dollars are staying within the state / country, and not going to places like Asia.

Fly in fly out, with no isolation and exempt from hard border

News to me and 1000s of others.

Currently Vic are the only ones still required to isolate.

Before the controlled border was introduced back in November, pretty much everyone in mining had to get an exemption and then quarantine / isolate for 2 weeks. There was a period of around 4 to 4/12 months when Vic and NSW people couldn't get into WA, even to isolate first.

Once the controlled border was introduced, those in states that were deemed medium risk, weren't eligible for an exemption, those in states that were deemed low risk (as Vic is now) don't need an exemption but have to isolate for the 14 days. Those in states that are deemed very low risk can come and go as they please, all you need to do is complete a G2G notification to let them know you're coming.

When the hard borders were in, it was only a very narrow band of fifo workers that could get exemptions, generally time critical workers, ie if we don't get them in now, production will stop or the mine will close.

At that stage, fifo workers weren't classed as being essential, while I was doing my quarantine in the first week of July last year, I had a number of work colleagues show up at Melbourne airport, with letters and exemptions in hand, they were all told to go home, the rules had changed. It took that look until November to get back to work. There were loads of HV and FP fitters flying to WA via Vic from Qld, they got to Perth airport and one of the questions was have you been in Vic in the last 14 days, the answer was yes, they had to change planes at Melbourne airport earlier that day, though they never left the airport. Nope, they were all on the next plane back to Qld.

It was amazing (it really wasn't, just predicable) that during the recent 5 day lockdown in Perth / Peel / SW which was announced on a Sunday afternoon, they realised later on that day / night that fifo workers, under their current regime weren't exempt. There were a lot of fast deals done to get that changed. To be quiet honest, that one wouldn't have made a massive amount of difference because those currently on site just stayed for a few days extra and all those in Perth that could, just worked from home. What it did do was just show his hypocrisy. fifo workers from out of WA not exempt, when it looked like it could severely affect production, fifo workers exempt.

What happened around Christmas time in Sydney ?.

The irony of this Covid crisis is that I think it has made Australians actually explore their own country. You comment about Broome (overrated) & Margaret River, but I ‘ve seen people now looking outside those areas and finding a beautiful big land out there. People have discovered beautiful hamlets that they would not have thought of visiting. Esperance >>>>> Bali.

Back on topic, the season will start on time in the usual manner. The article quoted was all “click bait”.

What category to Richmond fans fall under for constant deflection of the 2019 gift of 7 mcg games in a row leading into the finals

WAhhh fans obsess about it constantly.
Richmond fans say they're wrong.
WAhhh fans "constant deflection"

Calling bullshit bullshit isn't 'deflection'.

Literally the only side in any season of the AFL to go at a 100% win rate in victoria in 2018. (2020 doesn't count) We were 6/6 and beat our fellow grand finalists in Melbourne twice and another top 4 side. But hey, you keep clinging to that revisionist bullshit.

The V/AFL would have gone broke if it weren't for West Coast and Brisbane paying entry into the league. You should be ******* greatful your team is playing in a national competition full stop.

Also as the WAFC own both the Eagles and Dockers licences they can't be revoked and aren't under the control of the AFL. I'd love to see a court case where the AFL tries to defend an action of excluding 2 sides from the league for a year. They would lose and be forced to pay for the lost revenue of the season and potential lost revenue for future seasons as well. The AFL would be up for 150-200 million plus legal fees at the least. Then there is the AFLPA representing the cases of the players, emotional stress and so on and so forth. Would be a nice easy way to bankrupt the league and force out 4 victorian sides, GWS and the Gold Coast plus probably the AFLW as well. On top of this it would breach the AFL's contract with the TV rights contracts on 9 games a round. But carry on.

I'm pretty sure West Coast and Freo would walk away pretty happy with that, I guess in a season where you are excluded you automatically finish 17th and 18th with zero wins. Would be a pretty clear case for a priority pick on top of the teams taking pick 1 and 2 to the draft.

******* imbeciles.

Its so hilarious on so many levels. That WC supporter has convinced itself and would have every other supporter believe that football fairness had stopped after 2018. What a strange cooincidence it was the last time West Coast were any good!

Can anyone also seriously say they care about how many away wins WC had 3 seasons ago? Like the last 2 years just so happened to magically be irrelevant. I wonder why?

I and others have copped it at work, online and in Perth / person. The most extreme has been a rabid local at work in his 40s who went to a doctor and took stress leave because he was working with potentially infectious Victorians, despite at that stage all of us had been in WA for 2 to 3 months straight. Work management telling us to relocate to WA or to **** off. Work colleagues of over 10 years giving it to us online, locals in Perth seriously giving us a wide berth at shops and accommodation (and not in jest). At the end of the day, it's no skin off my nose, I just rub their noses in it, but it has been widespread at my site which has dozens of us from the east coast. I can't imagine it's isolated to our site.

Joke or not (I personally think it's a piece of sh*t), at least half the state probably reads it.

You buy one copy in the household and there may be 2, 3, 4 or more people in that household who read it. When we fly to site from Perth there's a fresh copy of The West on each seat, that plane will do 2 or more return trips per day to site with probably 200+ seats on the plane.

Per a percentage of population, the sales are as high as anywhere, the actual readership is much higher.
Because there's literally nothing else that can match their reach. I'm not sure when there was legitimate local competition, perhaps there never was.

Can we please just Secede already. Would happily keep South Australia, Queensland and the NT but if we must lose them to get rid of Victoria and NSW sucking taxes out of our state it would all be worth it.

Then footy is an international sport as well. We'll keep the West Aussie divisions of the military including the SAS as well thanks.

Yep, you can only keep the members of the ADF that were recruited out of WA. You reckon SA, Qld and the NT aren't sucking money out of WA? I'd say that along with Tas, that group would be the worst offenders.

Every time I fly back to WA for work it would be a duty free run. Works for me.

You do realise that SA, QLD, NT and Tas are the ones sucking your taxes away?

Vic is the only state to have NEVER been on the receiving end of the Feds distribution of taxes...unlike WA, which for most of it's history has been a charity case.

Please do secede...but first, pay us back all the money you owe us.
