30 players classified as rucks this year, Bailey at 27.....

Matt Flynn was decently rated for his game surprisingly. Looking at Stats, ok contested possessions, high contested marks (1st per game), decent clearances (9th per game), a goal, and high pressure acts (3rd per game).

Might be time to bring him back, probably get more hit outs when not playing Witts.

2 things stick out with this, every decent ruck that you would target is at least 26yo and far better business in the AFL to buy rucks than develop them.
While we may have uncovered our next young ruck in A Reid, he is still 3-4 years away from being a 80% TOG ruck, BW is a decent 2nd ruck.
WC need to buy a ruck in the 26-30yo bracket that has 3-4 years decent years in them D Cameron and let BW be the decent 2nd ruck option who is durable and competes, he also covers for injuries and let A Reid develop his massive upside.

It is well known in here that ruck is one of our biggest areas of concern and the following stats are still mind blowing.

We are currently 17th for hit outs, which can be an overrated stat at times, but 18th in hit outs to advantage, which I find to be significantly more important. For example 17th placed St Kilda (6.6 per game) are 10% clear of our average (6 per game).

Further to that, we are getting slaughtered with conceding the most hit outs to advantage at the same time. Our average differential per game is -9.2, which is double the next worst team (St Kilda @ -4.6 per game).

It's no wonder the ball is walking out of the middle (last in clearances) and inside 50 (last in inside 50 differential).

If I'm Mini, Schofiled and/or Shuey, this has got to be addressed. It's one thing if we're not winning the hit out to advantage (or even the hitout), but we sure as hell can't be allowing it on a platter for their mids time and time again.

I'd be giving Flynn a run this week.

1744684715371.png Of the 30 rucks in the league, our three rucks are all in the bottom 8 for hit outs to advantage, albeit Flynn had Witts round 1 and was monstered and we haven't seen him since.

We need to find a solution to minimise the damage at the source.

We are lucky Bryan is out this week as he is putting together some nice numbers playing second ruck.

Again with the ruck position.
It is also imperative that a decent ruck has a decent midfield to hit too, our midfield kids will develop and next draftees will develop over the next 3-4 years.

Still that massive hole that is our midfield now!
Not many options thrown up recently that solve the problem now and we need 2 of them.

The obvious 1 part of the solution is Warner.
The other members is a mix of mids that are elite and maybe about to burst out in the 22-24 yo bracket.

J Ward OOC 2025 and would be the younger end AT 22 and has a big upside.
S Flanders RFA 2027 AND 24 and the 4th mid at GC.

These are my suggestions and I would be happy to pay up $$ wise and draft capital wise appropriately to fast track our list.
Using future capital for Ward or Flanders for known players is good business, Ward may cost a 2nd round pick and Flanders would cost a 1st round pick imo.

Maybe we should have given Flynn more than 1 week to see if he could be good in the ruck. He’s currently had a cracking 2 WAFL games. Based on minis mantra, he has to be in, and unless injured. Keep him there

I view the ruck as part of the midfield.

Having a ruck that can break even in hit outs and hit outs to advantage will make life a lot easier for our young mids.

We can still use our high picks on midfielders and upgrade our ruckman with lesser picks (via trade).

He has played against two barely Wafl league standard ruckmen.
Do not be fooled by stats. You have to look at the quality of the oppositions ruckman.
I do hope he can improve and be better than Williams.

He can only play what’s in front of him, and he’s been doing well. Reward him and back him in. Let him try and build some form in the AFL.

anyone know much about Coburg ruckman Cooper Keogh?
looking at some VFL stats, he seems to have started the season well.

not a lot out there on the web about him apart from him being a draft smokey last year on the back off some good form in 2024. Apparently a pretty physical 200cm ruckman. might be slightly short if he doesnt have much of a leap?

No idea if he is any good, this is just stats based.

So he had a good game? Great.

Bailey Williams was rated 5th best ruck in the league a couple of seasons ago.

Try watching English play instead of quoting stats. Soft as butter and loses CBDs consistently. He's just lucky he has Liberatore and Richards to help out.
Bailey was rated the fifth best ruck in the league 2 years ago? What were his hit outs to advantage numbers then?

Yes. The bloke some pundits in West Australian media were saying we should've traded pick 1 for(Reid).
I don't remember anybody even on this board, let alone in the media, suggesting trading pick 1 in the Harley Reid draft for Tim English. That never hapenned. IIRC he was a FA at the end of the year in which we were chasing him so we were looking to get him for free. And we didn't chase him for very long as he wanted massive money and super long contract and he was already having concussion issues.

Good luck selling the club to any decent player with these headlines from our players. Not sure if it’s taken out of context or not.

On top of the Waterman and Jack Graham training comments……

Going over the current draft makeup and if we are being honest here, im excited by nothing. It looks another even draft that having a top pick in means very little. Difference between pick 1 and pick 5 is so miniscule it isnt worth the pain of it all.

Its yet another draft we enter with me wishing we were the Brisbane Lions at this point in time. Even though they are top of the table and we are bottom they are going to have a better draft then us, whether anyone can admit it or not
Levi and Marshall look good but id take our draft last year

Elliot Yeo says we need to get urgent?

That guy would be 4-6 weeks late for his own funeral.
