One part of the machine is clearly broken (ok, there's other as well!).It's either that part (the S&C team) is incompetent, or something is stopping then from being effective. Our first trial game next season will be when we know if it's still broken. Given the position we are in, I expect media reports to say many players are the "fittest they've ever been". And I'm hoping anyone not towing the line is playing Beagles.

I think the problem is slightly simpler: our strength and conditioning team aren't great, but they are being afforded leeway a team would normally get if they were great. Warren Kofed our long term fitness boss i suspect will be retained for next year. Ditto our medical and strength and conditioning team. And that's the worry: nobody is freaking out because nobodies job is in danger. Everyone is a bit too comfortable at the club atm, and this is despite having had our worst ever season. And from what i can gather, despite this, the message coming out of the club is unity and consolidation, rather then reviews and firings. And after the season we have had, that is fundamentally the wrong way to do it.

As per the my last post though, its starts at the top. Nesbit having been at the helm for 20+ years and having the power to leave whenever he feels likes doesn't help

So why have so many players been unfit over the past 3 years?

Option 1: The S&C team are completely incompetent. You'd presume they all had to have sound resumes to get a job at WCEFC, but for some unbeknown reason lost all their skills and knowledge

Option 2: The players were given too much autonomy by someone which undermined the S&C team from getting the results that got them the job in the first place

And if you think if any head AFL coach approached the S&C team and said, "hey, these players have skinfolds and aren't fit" the S&C team wouldn't make efforts to improve, then you are delusional. But I think we both know that this never would have happened (Simmo approaching them).

Option 3 - it is related to the hardness of our training grounds

I just don't think we can get enough running in to keep up with the top-echelon sides. They push too far and we are getting constant injuries, not enough and we are fat and can't run out games. And now we sit in the middle with the best/worst of both options.

No doubt the organisation is covering for the S&C staff to some extent, as if they don't they know where the blame will be pointed (at them).

If the players are unfit/have skinfolds, then the coach must intervene. He's the one whose getting paid to get on field results. He must ask the S+C team why this is happening and demand better fitness levels.

Do you think a professional S+C would let players be unfit? There is almost no chance people who have a gig at an elite sporting club would be that incompetent.

So how did it happen? (please provide your opinion on this)

My guess: Simmo or someone in the coaching ranks gave the players far too much autonomy meaning the S&C staff would have been undermined.

If the player doesn't commit, what are S&C or coaches to do?

S&C: NN, you need to eat healthier and push yourself more in training.
NN: Ok will do
orders dominos

S&C: Simmo, they're not listening to me!
Simmo: NN, you need to eat healthier and push yourself more in training.
NN: Ok will do
takes bite out of pizza

Come selection time, Simmo looks at his book of credits and selects NN because who else is there?

Dunno, but it's been going on for 4 years. Simmo has already shown he'll play guys unfit. It's like he's scared to take a step back to take 2 steps forward.

*, wish I could smash pizza while winning Woosha Medals and All-Australians :(

While coming back from dual knee reconstructions.

Can’t believe Nic was allowed to be in that sort of shape.

Thing is, we can talk about the worrying lack of ability in our strength and conditioning team until we are blue in the face, but ultimately the buck stops with standards and accountability, which to me should start with people like Simpson and Nesbit

Imagine the shockwaves if Nic Nat presents himself in the same way for the coming pre-season and Simpson takes him to task: "Nic, you are too heavy, and you are banished from the main squad until you reduce your skinfolds and drop 5kgs"

The whole squad would be like "F*CK.........!!"

Ditto selection: "Andrew Gaff, you have put in some poor defensive efforts in the past few weeks and we are sending you back to the WAFL to work on some things"

It would only have to happen a few times for the team to get a jolt and for the message to get through: We at the Eagles have high standards which you a required to meet. Seniority, credits and the bank and past reputations no longer hold any weight

Ironically, Simpson did do exactly that to Gov and it saved his career. The problem is, he hasn't done it since. Maybe that is because Gov is a "senior player" now.....

At a board level, Nesbit should be taking the Strength and Condition and Medical teams to task. Put the acid of them. Come our and say that our levels of player availability and poor conditioning wont be tolerated next season and as such jobs are on the line. Don't use "tenure" and "stability" as reason to continually tolerate poor performance and everyone who has been at the club for a while goes on with no worries in the world

Standards start at the top, and its high time that we create some, and more importantly, enforce them. Universally, across the board from the top to the bottom of this football club
This all might be true but the problem is they will NEVER do this publically. for all we know they have had these conversations this year with players and with the staff. There is no way in hell they would make those public.

So you're essentially asking them to do things we would never be able to verify.

The availability this year has been so poor that half a gaff and 1/4 of nic nat is better than anyone we would have been bringing in to replace them.

Also unless we can trade the S+C team is there a better thread for that other than in the contract and trade thread?

Bazzo, JJ and Jamieson extend. Bazzo has signed until the end of 2025 but annoyingly, they don’t say how long the other two have extended for

Also no mention of Jones being upgraded off the rookie list which although mandatory it’d be nice if they acknowledged it

What about this…..
Eagles give up.
Rioli, picks 20(912points) pick 26 (729 points) and 38(465 points) future 3rd

Get pick one from Nth

Draft 2 of Wardlaw, Tatas or Sheezel

Swap future 2nd to suns to get back into second round

Tell me I’m dreaming haha

Why do North care in the slightest about points?

Does west coast eagles have a war chest?
We do. Unfortunately it's full of contracts for old, injured players rather than dollars.

When the Gaff/Shuey/Gov/Kelly etc. contracts expire over the next few years we'll have dollars. But until then we are in a tight spot (apparently).

This really annoys me more than it should. It really is so simple to just include have “signed on until the end of 2024” (for example).

Why include the length of Bazzo’s contract but not the other two? Why??

Everything they do in the communication and fan engagement space annoys me.

There’s just an overwhelming reluctance to tell fans anything that they don’t absolutely have to.

He only managed 8 games this year - hurt his knee and it flared up again when he tried to come back. If he can't get his body right for next year I doubt he is on the list in 2024 (contract or not).

Not sure what that’s got to do with his pizza intake over the last four years.

It was simply to show they are getting reasonable value back for pick one.

They would strongly argue that giving up pick 1 and getting a handful of picks, none of which are higher than 20, is not reasonable value despite what the points might say.

How hard would it be to include how long Jamieson and Jones extended for?

Communication remains underwhelming.
