No wonder why they said Naughts was on fire this preseason kicking bags 🤣

To who ever thinks Gardner has “flicked a switch” over the preseason is laughable. He’s still going to be a below average player this year. That position is the weakest link in our chain, even more so then a good small forward. If Keath gets a longtime injury we are in trouble.

Is this matchup confirmed?

I'm not a believer in Gardiner at all (as i've said several times Cordy should be in the team instead), but to directly blame him for an opposition forward for kicking a bag (except for the Hipwood one) just isn't true.

For anyone who can bare watching it again, the elimination final is a pretty good example. Max King often was directly matched to Bailey Williams or Easton Wood even though we had all of Keath, Cordy and Gardiner playing. Our structures and zone defence often doesn't consider cm's but rather closing space.

FWIW if Naughton had our A grade midfield kicking to him with our defensive zone setup then more likely than not he's going to kick a bag. Our defence (both talls and smalls) are so reliant on midfield domination and slowing the play down up the field.

Naughton will have to play back if Keath goes down. As far as Gardner's concerned I think he's been getting some unwarranted flack from our fans due to some very poor showings early on in his career and baffling matvh comittee decisions regarding his place in the side.

Credit where it's due Gardner has been solid this pre-season and deserves his spot in the side. With some luck he could become handy.

I still wouldn't pull the trigger on that if that happened. In my mind Naughton should be up forward to capitalise on midfield dominance and down back when required to stem the bleeding.

Really just a pinch hitter down back if we are getting killed out of the centre or 3rd man intercepting to help against a dominant opposition forward.

We play a zone defence. Nobody has been "playing on" Naughton. It's impossible to draw any inferences about who did what without actually seeing the game/training sessions.
Regardless who Gardners “playing on” he’s still a massive liability. Has be been thrown into the deep end... yes he has but we need to upgrade that CHB position in the off season and keep him as depth.

I wasn't really offering an opinion on the Gardner discussion, just highlighting the pointlessness of trying to draw inferences about matchups from action nobody has seen. But since you asked...

Gardner is not a natural decision maker under pressure and that really shows at the level, but I don't agree that he has shown himself to be a "massive liability" in recent times. He has been fairly reliable in the preseason games and built towards the back end of last year. I think a lot of the criticism of Gardner persists from his early and diabolical form with a touch of confirmation bias and in some cases quite aggressive prejudice. I am worried about him getting exposed but I don't think his current form is that of a complete liability.

That said - I don't disagree with your second statement. It's clear that an upgrade in that area of the ground would do the most to improve our fortunes.

Right now I'd only go with Khamis on debut (on the assumption Crozier and Wood both miss). Feel we need additional high ball support with those two missing.

McNeil and Scott can have a couple of weeks in the 2s before we bring them in (if they warrant it).

FB: Khamis/Wood, Gardiner, Williams
HB: Daniel, Keath, Duryea
C: Smith, Macrae, Hunter
HF: Bontempelli, Naughton, Cavarra
FF: Wallis, English, Bruce
R: Martin, Dunkley, Treloar
Int: Liberatore, Lipinski, West, JJ

Emg: McNeil, VDM, Dale

I worry about VDM. He's a risk with his soft tissue injuries. Personally I wouldn't play him since he had a minor problem only a few weeks ago.

Cavarra will not be in the 22 this week.

Bedendo is the only player on our list who I could see being better than Bont. He came so close to having an effective touch against Melbourne a few times. There's something special about the way he almost marks the ball. I haven't seen a player with that kind of raw talent since Jarrad Grant.

Hey, Marra’s our young King of Almost Marks.

Nice parody of Essendon fans talking about Archie Perkins.

First impressions of a player are rarely shaken. Gia was still being called soft towards the back-end of his career well after he learned how to get "footy-tough" (as Scott West / Choco Royal would term it).

I actually have concerns about how Khamis kicks under pressure, it's arguably the thing that held him back last year. Given time and space he's a fine kick though.
I like him long term and if he does debut this year I think he's ahead of the curve considering where he started. He certainly does time spoils well considering he was playing tall at "only" 190cm.

Scrag is back baby, yeah!

The team I would pick

Duryea. Keath. Daniel

Williams. Naughton. Hunter

Lipinski. Macrae. B Smith

West. Schache. Dunkley

Wallis. Bruce. English

Martin. Bontempelli. Libba

Treloar. Vandermeer. JJ. Dale

Emergency
Wood
Gardner
Richards

The team I expect

Wood. Gardner. Daniel

Williams. Keath. Dale/Lipinski

Hunter. Macrae. B Smith

Vandermeer. Naughton. Scott

Wallis. Bruce. English

Martin. Bont. Libba

Dunkley Treloar West. JJ

Emergency
Duryea
Richards
Jong (my concussion sub)

Naughty could be a sensational swing-man. And if Martin stays fit, Schache & English don’t get in JB’ s pathway too often
Most of my genuine leg speed is on the bench but Collingwood are not quick either
I Expect us to blood a youngster, either Scott or McNeil
Baku looks promising but isn’t ready yet
Looking forward to seeing Libba release Treloar out of the centre

Stef Martin is the most important recruit we have playing on Friday night, predominately for the reason it means Grundy is not going to dominate us in the same way he has in the past. Sure, he's likely to still be influential, but no where near to the same level.

I feel we would have beaten them twice in 2019 had we had Stef Martin playing for us.

He's had 11 Brownlow votes from his past 4 outings against us.

He's absolutely destroyed us repetitively.

Meanwhile 0 Brownlow votes against Lions for the past 4 or so seasons.

He has Tim English beaten before the game starts, our lanky tyro has no idea how to ruck against him. Though Bev probably won't pick Martin to give us the shits.

Darren Jolly was arguably the recruit of the year the year the Pies won. He was just what they needed. Ball had a hand too. Martin and Treloar are couple of quality additions and points of difference and we already have plenty of balls.
