The other worry for Collingwood supporters is that McStay is a bloke who tries his guts out and looks great on paper, but he is going to break their hearts with monotonous regularity.

Their midfield looks cooked.
Pendles, Sidey and Lipinski ain’t the way forward.

One paced and getting slower.

Mitchell’s vital for them to win a flag. And I’m not sure he’s up to it anymore.
They can’t just rely on Nicky to win the contest himself.

Fly needs to find some pace and two way run and inject it into that midfield group quickly.

I’m not sure how the game showed that. We had no problem winning the ball. Our issue was on the spread.

Good to see you've gone ad-hominem pile up on myself without providing any context to the thread.

Excellent work from a "moderator", forget the posting part.

Sorry Roby, just think people should know who they're dealing with.

As for the thread, Pies were terrible yesterday. I suspect they'll improve considerably on that effort but it was a very alarming performance.

I would be less worried about the spread when you have the ball and more worried about the chase when you don’t.

I’m no Collingwood apologist but I find the pile on after just one game quite extraordinary. Were far from their best but played one of the flag favourites on their deck. Albeit the Giants had a few out, the Pies will be much better with De Goey and Houston in the team. Won’t win the flag but would be surprised if they are not at least competing for a spot in the 8. After one round I’m not buying into the “Pendlebury is too old & slow” and “Daicos is a downhill skier” narrative.

Then their strategy the past 2 years has been a complete and utter failure.

They gave away 2x decent picks for Lachie Schultz to try and go back to back. They didn't get near it, doubled down and gave away another 2x decent picks & handy depth for Houston. Not to mention Perryman chewing up $900k of their cap - all this whilst their youth already looked completely bare.

You don't make those moves unless you're supremely confident you can win the flag, because the aftermath is ugly - we've seen this countless times. North under Scott, Hawthorn after Clarko, Richmond after Dimma.

There's no way in hell the Pies admin will be content with shitting their list up the wall for an 8th placed finish & semi-final appearance.

We wouldn’t have to chase in the first place if we were able to connect on the outside.

But regardless when I said our issue was on the spread, I meant both offensively and defensively.

Collingwood will be looking to contend but they were a long, long way off the standard yesterday.

Mihocek, Membrey, McStay, Long, Schultz, Hoskin-Elliott, Maynard, Lipinski, Allen… team had a bit of a VFL look to it tbh.

Sidebottom and Pendlebury can’t go forever.

The stars are elite obviously but they’ll have a big workload.

We shall see, only one game in.

Think everyone needs to calm down a fraction

1. It's round 0 (1) Brisbane were 0/5 or something last year, it's a poor game thats all it is.
2. Under every metric until 3/4 Collingwood should have been ahead contested ball, possessions everything, so the margin blew out but they weren't as bad as the margin stated.
3. The Giants showed why they are the premiership favourites or at least very close to it, they had a bit more class when it counted, whether it be Callahan, Toby at times and have the best defender in the game by a country mile in Taylor marking everything.
4. Lets see how they go against Port this week.

Only a “post-human” could be that detached!

Give them a month before writing them off, teams have contended after a poor patch. The only thing against this is their age profile as you'd assume they would be wanting to not push your Pendles etc to the max as it just increases injury. That said though lets see how they are in round 5, I certainly am not writing them off losing to one of the top 4 sides away from home.

Too early to completely write them off, you have to treat it as just a bad game. We saw last year the Lions were terrible in the first month but got it together.

However, there are major warning signs and you'd be a tad uneasy if you were being truly honest.

Fair enough not to write them off completely after one game, as fun as it is :).

However, if they look Biden-esque in the first match of the year, I can’t see their raft of 30+ players “freshening up” as the season progresses.

Don't disagree but all I'll say is you better not lose to Richmond this week! That would be way worse than a Giants loss.

I actually agree they have cooked this 'challenge for a flag' thing, the Houston trade is fine, it's the Schultz one. I don't get why you trade Ginnavan for a worse version at double the price and that's not even considering the draft capital on top
