I don't know anything about what's being implied so hoping it is just all rumour.

The thought has definitely crossed my mind in terms of a shift and whether we have enough leaders vs players who need to be lead.

The late years of Selwoods captaincy were possibly the exception to the rule though. Unbelievable leader, older team with families, different priorities.

We are shifting to a younger team again, and challenges come with that. Stevie J, Chappy, Mackie even Scarlo in his younger days. There's was a bit going on back in 2011 with some younger boys too.

I think there would definitely be some challenges, I hope we have good young emerging leaders too (I'm not convinced we do). I loved our old wholesome family era but it was probably the exception.

When Stevie J was being mischievous (and not all team mates liked chappy) the main thing that kept us going were they were both super competitive and respected on field. Smith seems like he could be that way too so I'm hoping that's the case.

lol, direction of the club. We are fine mate. Chris Scott and the leadership team can manage the occasional challenging situation.

Just go to the Carlton Board if you want some perspective. They genuinely thought they’d win the premiership this year and are in absolute meltdown.

Not sure what the issue is. Smith marches to his own beat and always has since his time with the Bulldogs (and now us). As long as he continues playing brilliant footy, what is the issue there?

'Unnamed midfielder' is a real shock but completely out of the clubs hands.

Personally, if Ugle-Hagan was ever at all interested in joining Geelong, we would welcome him with open arms. He would get the very best out of himself here. Could truly become one of his generations greatest ever players in Geelong colors.

Tanner is a separate non club issue that shouldn't be lumped in with the others-and is an issue with a historically low conviction rate.

On the rest I'm not that concerned although I agree if Smith got a club suspension we should have just been honest and said so-no need to be obtuse like our injury list stuff.

Anyone who was out and about in Geelong during those years can attest to that.

Seen PLENTY of 2/3 time premiership players consuming the Columbian GDP every night.
It's still rife through every single club even now, including our own.
Honestly at this point it's as part of AFL footy as meat pies and over priced middies.

Same. Well not every night but every weekend :p

Scarlo one of the worst!

When the AFL boys club, media et al are all partaking, there's not going to be a clamp down.

Poor thread but the trade thread has long demonstrated that many people eat up any rumour and lack even the most basic bullsh!t detector.

As for Stengle, delusional to think that there would not have been internal consequences last year just because the club didn’t deliver him up to the media. Worse than missing one game or public condemnation is spending all week in meetings with media/PR managers, welfare officers, coaches, list managers, HR, his own manager.

And at the moment the club is leaking like a sieve. Everything seems to be getting out.
Are you sure it’s the club and not disgruntled opposition clubs like Bulldogs? There’s a lot of hate for Geelong

I don't think using the term 'club is leaking like a sieve' is exactly actuate in terms of the stories and speculation over recent events (even things going back to last year), but it's more a sign of the times we live in

Surely no one is naive enough to believe we had a team of saints back during the 2007 -> 2011 period, but it was also a period where smart phones like the iPhone were new (07), social media platforms like Insta launched in 2010 with Snapchat the following year

Now days, everyone has a smartphone in their pocket, where so many share nearly all aspects of their lives & what they witness across those various platforms etc, and that can mean that those stories which at one stage didn't leave the nightclub, is now out there for others to see before the player has left the nightclub

So I don't really see this as a situation where the "club is leaking like a sieve", but rather that it's simply getting harder for all clubs (AFL, NRL etc) or even anyone with something of a public profile, to keep some of those activities on the quiet on every occasion

What's that saying again? A Lie can travel half way around the world before the Truth can put its boots on..
One "Source". No Corroboration. Circumstantial Evidence (said player missed a game) Backed by something posted online. Heck I'm sure I can find online that SHocking is an Alien! This whole thread is just a phishing expedition. And I'm one of the calm ones..

iPhones, cctv, dash cams, body cams..... there's no privacy or hiding anything anymore.

You could be right. My source works at another club. Has worked at multiple clubs and is well respected in the industry.

Thomas was hardly a serious interest.

The club said it investigates possibilities with all players - that it's almost duty bound to do so.

Smith's "issues" are more likely to be the Bulldogs than his own personally. And he's had one slip up a few years back and none since arriving.

There's a reason the exodus from the Dogs has been as heavy as it has and it's not Bailey Smith.

Stengle got on the booze a bit too heavily after what was likely a long stint off it - disappointing but not the end of the world. Didn't miss training. Didn't miss a game.

As for the "unnamed mid" - you can't exactly predict that kind of thing.
If a player caught taking drugs a few years back is one of your red flags who suffers anxiety and depression, then I think half the players in the AFL are also secretly red flags who just haven’t been caught yet.

Stengle? He drank a bit too much, who cares. One off. Half the adult world is also in this bracket at some point.

If reports are true of this unnamed midfielder raping a woman, it is the issue and bad character of that person, nothing to do with the club.

It becomes a cultural problem if geelong players are doing it in groups together, but one line individual is just that, an issue with an individual, not a club.

We do. His name is Connor osullivan. Future captain material all over him

I'm thinking so.

There are moments in time where a club has to - should - take a stance on what it represents, what it tolerates, what it won't.

What it stands for.

A strong club will do it, pointedly mark it down as 'disciplinary' to send a message, but are we that strong as a club?

I'd like to think so, but then I lack confidence in the club, and Scott, to be so forthright.

It's not in their DNA.
Misguided lack of confidence there- CS will NEVER publicly let you know a thing, but behind closed doors, he is very strong and measured at the same time, from what has been said by past players who are in the know- Mooney, Ling, SJ, Bartel, Stokes- to name several.
He allows players to run their lives as they please as long as there is no clash with the club ethos.

Okay fair enough. I wasn't really having a crack, it's more so if we take stuff from the rumour board to here then we might as well be specific.

The court thing I just don't see the connection or relevance. Same with the audit. This is its own thing. The recruitment targets, its a bit of a long bow to draw but I accept a POV where it fits into this picture.

Remember, for two party boys there's a lot who aren't. If you feel it has spread, you have to be prepared to state it or else not give a vague "there could be other troubling examples too" vibe. That stuff would be better left on the rumours board IMO.

Personally I'm not too invested in the club's "brand" or PR. But I do want them to perform best duty of care and standard setting to help both these men in general, and on field performance. I feel a bit too out of the loop on specifics to make sweeping condemnations and recommendations though tbh.
I did become invested in it when Harley took over the leadership reigns, and onto Ling, and to a slightly lesser extent Selwood.
Harley was highly instrumental in settiong up a new ethos and paradigm, from all reports, with a zero tolerance of idiocy.

I think we have a few. Lawson Humphries is definitely an option. I think Zuth is up there. Holmes potentially.

I think it was only 12 months ago we were talking about bringing in Smith and the conversation was about how most of our list was made up of goody two shoes types.
