Changes Vs Geelong

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen/heard Davis is a little slow. We have Bock/Rutten to cover Mooney/Hawkins and the rest of Geelong's goal scoring is done generally by their midsize and onball players (Steve Johnson back). So if Otten is not fit, Davis doesn't seem the right fit in our back line.

Geelong's back line will lose a lot of rebound with Scarlett out. The forecast is windy (what's new) with showers developing so I would like to see Walker play as he can be freaky of the ground.

That's a good call. The Cats have been playing a shortish lineup with Hawkins as their backup ruckman. If Otten is out (which will suck a bit as he probably would have had first crack at Stevie J) then I'm not sure that Davis is the answer this week. I'm in the in: Edwards, Walker - out: Martin, Otten with Stevens going back to defence camp. Though if Otten comes up it's going to make things a lot harder.

If Otten pulls up 100% then it will be OUT: Martin (inj); IN: Edwards. Stevens will continue his swing role and Otten will pick up S.Johnson. He will go well in the air and he's agile and quick enough to nullify him on ground level. He took him earlier in the year, although he probably didn't win the contest he could probably take alot out of it to benefit him for this match.

I think this post is spot on. Its all about the match ups particularly in defence and Davis could have see us going in too tall for a forward structure that is notorious for pace, ground pressure and a bit of magic as opposed to strong pack marking.

Key match up will be on Johnson which will be a tough task for anyone. I reckon he needs to be man marked with a hard tag, someone who can contenst in the air and on the ground....for mine it would be Doughty.

Also dont mind the thought of bringing in Walker to stretch an undermanned defence.

Options for Johnson would include:

Otten: a huge challenge and learning curve after previous attempt. Looks good on paper but i wouldn't be surprised if the young gun is slightly down on early season form as the grind of his first full season takes its toll.

Goodwin: would command some respect from Johnson going the other way but defensive probably not tight enough and last week showed he can still be invaluable in stints up the ground. A good secondary option.

Bock: some may laugh but it's a remote possibility. Again would require some accountability from Johnson but alternatively, despite Bock's reasonable athleticism, he may find Johnson too agile and 'slippery'.

Johncock: hasn't been mentioned but is in good form, probably the best ground level match-up, a better than average spoiler on the lead despite a height disadvantage, has the pace and agility and defensive toughness. My one major concern is that Johnson no longer plays a deep forward role but covers a huge amount of territory and often gets 20+ possessions all over the forward half...would Stiffy have the endurance to stick with him?

Doughty: has proven he can tag, has the running power and ground level covered, experienced in defence but i worry that Johnson would embarrass him overhead. Sure, Johncock is also short but Stiff is way better in one-on-one marking contests whereas i don't rate Doughty too highly in this area. Keep Doughty for the mids.

van Berlo: big opportunity for a real team game from the possible future skipper. Tough, can play with a defensive mindset, adequate pace, right height, good endurance and running power, has 'tagged' before so should have a good balance of when to run-off or clear handball to runners while not letting Johnson slip too far out the other/goal side. Only query is defensive instincts is one-on-one deep in defence if Thompson decides to isolate the match-up.

So dunno if anyone else has called for it but if i were Craigy this week I'd start with Steve Johnson v Nathan van Berlo:thumbsu:

Yay I finally managed to log onto BF again :)

I agree with TLF8, VB would be a good choice to "tag" Stevie J who may not be 100% fit this time. I think Robbie Gray exposed Otten a little bit on the weekend, as Otten couldn't quite go with the agile, clever small forward. Otten IMO would be a better match up for Rooke. Rutten on Hawkins, Bock on Mooney, maybe Johncock on Stokes, Doughty on Varcoe are the other likely defensive match ups.

If Otten doesn't come up, then Stevens can go back and Walker can make his return. No offence to Davis, but this isn't the week to be debuting a skinny, tall defender.

Agree he is a key match up but I think we will need Doughty for one of Ablett or Selwood with Shirley getting the other. This would leave Bartel unmatched but we can't tag all of them.

VB or Otten if he is fit for Stevie J.

Prepare for your post to be used by Port flogs on Bay 13 ;)

I wouldn't mind seeing VB get the Johnson task, though they may wish to isolate him in the square.

I don't think johnson's ready, if they rush him, he shouldn't be too much or a problem.

Or with Edwards coming back in, Goodwin might be the right match up for S. Johnson but I would think VB is probably more likely.

Stevie J is a product of what happens in the midfield. We must concentrate all efforts there first before worrying about what he is doing.

Last week the Hawks kept the Cats to under 400 possesions...this is key. In fact they actually had more of the ball than them. The last few times we have played the Cats they have just about been on world record pace each time.

We haven't played bad at Skilled in rescent years, even though we didn't get the wins. I would expect this to be a tight game, especially with the conditions. Also, I wouldn't discount Stevie J, apparantley was close last week so I would assume he pretty much back to full fitness. I just hope he's a little rusty.;) As has been happening recently, Hawkins and Mooney have been pinch hitting in the ruck, who would Rutten or Bock get when those two are rotating in there? Does big Mumford go foward or does Lonergan drift down there? Also, when Ablett is down there, do people reckon Doughty or Stiffy will match up on him, or will VB maybe follow him?

I'm with Drummond here. Walker was truly outstanding yesterday at Parade. Performances back at SANFL good and attitude great. I think Crows are just trying to protect him/prolong his AFL year. The boy is WAY too good for SANFL.

If Otten out, Stevo back, Walker in. Geelong will have no tall defenders, must try to stretch them. We are a sneaky chance with their injuries

Good post.
Taylor will Walk tall this weekend;) particularly if Maric and Tippett continue to ruck together like last weekend (at times)

Andrew Mackie @ 193-194cm held Buddy to 1 goal in the 2nd half on Saturday and was critical to us winning with Taylor & Scarlett out.

Otherwise I would have thought that we could afford to play a bit smaller down back this week as you guys don't have big power forwards like a Hawthorn or Brisbane. Harley will also more than likely play this week and stregthen the backline.

Game will be about midfield supply - as usual. If we get SJ back then I'd be confident of kicking a winning score with guys like Ablett Chapman and Co rotating through forward 50 as well.

Edwards and Walker IN
Martin and Otten OUT

With Scarlett and Taylor out it means Walker will be stood by a 5th or 6th string defender rather than a 3rd or 4th.

Tippett, Burton, Walker and Porps should prove a handful for their defence. I really like our forward line like this because all of those players are very much different players. They are also all capable of kicking a bag of 5 goals. ;)
