Again? This is probably the biggest fallacy currently going on around these parts. Jamar may not be what he was a few years ago, but he is still a very good tap ruckman (something which Gawn currently is not excelling at).Another 35 hit outs today against the runners up no less.

He's also markedly improving his attack on the ball around the ground and is finally learning how to mark it out of a kick in - something only he, Clarky and Dawes have proven they can do. We (myself included) were all calling for him to have a spell early in the year, but Spencer's efforts simply proved in my mind that he will be our first ruck throughout the year and probably into next year too.

Pedersen didn't play ruck once today, FWIW. Only Jamar and Fitzpatrick.

We really can't afford to discard another 100 game + Melbourne bloke either.

Jamar is fast becoming obsolete. He gets his hit outs and still has the same positive attitude but is way too slow and as for his marks on kick outs the horse has bolted, he's nearly 30 - a case of better late than never.

If we don't start rotating our rucks now and getting games into Gawn we'll be in a whole world of trouble next year.

I'm not saying we shelve Jamar, after all he's contracted till the end of next year but we should keep him fresh and treat him as a bonus ruck more than a stock ruck. Sure we can play him next week but I think we need to change the way we think about our ruck setups in general from now on. 12 valuable games left to get some genuine senior experience into Gawn. I'd like to see him play 7 or 8 of those at least.

Gawn could do with 2 or 3 weeks in the VFL now, just let the forwards like Fitz have a go. He was impressive in his cameo but laboured in his last two.

Bring him in to play ruck/forward (emphasis on sharing the role) in a few weeks time.

Fair enough re Gawn needing a reprieve in the 2s.

We don't have time on our hands like previous years though.

Hard to disagree, but he really does need a few consecutive weeks in the side. He deserves it, you can't do much more at VFL level.
I agree he deserves a spot but he really isn't anything special, I also dissagree that bigger blokes take longer to develop, all players need time it's just that there is more opportunity for smaller guys and mids

Can't believe some want to drop Strauss - got beaten defensively but clearly can use the ball, needs persevering with, looking much more comfortable at the level.

IN: Sylvia
OUT: Bail

definitely keep kent in i like were that kids going.

bring sylvia back in as well as magner.

drop roden (i for some reason didn't like his performance) and get rid of fitz (or is he shaggy from scooby doo?)

keep evans in, i just think he deservers more game time

In: Sylvia, Magner, McDonald
Out: Bail, McKenzie, Frawley (if injured)

No need to rest Jones or Evans with an 8 day break then the bye coming up.

Give Fitz and Strauss a run of 3 more games at least.

This, although I can't see McKenzie being dropped.

Agreed. Also he kicked the ball better than any of our other defensive players yesterday, the problem is he just isnt getting enough kicks, but he clearly has a lot of upside and should get a few games in a row.

This week melbourne play home to collingwood. i thought i'd start something new by posting what i think is Melbourne's best line up, if i were the coach. please feel free to make your own Selections and post them keen to hear them. and of couse is a discussion so if you don't like some of my line up argue the point.

Round 11 Team Selection
Full Backs
LB: C Garlend FB: J Frawly RB: L Dunn

Half Backs
LHB: T Mcdonald (Injury test) CHB: Dean Terlich RHB: J Magner

Centre/wings
LW: A Davey C: C Sylvia RW: M Jones

Half Forwards
LHF: J Howe CHF:J Trengrove RHF: M Evans

Forwards
LF: J Seller FF: M Gawn RF: C Dawes

Ruck
RUC: M Jamar RUC ROVER: D Kent ROVER: N Jones

Bench
J Watts, N Jetta, J Toumpas (injury test)

Sub
J Mcdonald

In’s:
T Mcdonald (injury test)
J Magner
C Sylvia
N Jetta

J Toumpas (injury test)

Reasoning for positioning
D Kent (think he deserves more action with the footy)
M Gawn (is good a Full Forward, but mostly there for a distraction for Dawes and Seller)
A Davey (hit a good patch of form is excellent with his left foot so placed him on the wing)
J Seller (another target up forward so Dawes can play up the ground if he needs to)
C Sylvia (great ball winner, need some aggression in the centre of the ground)
J Magner (Passionate player, good spark, work needed in his position)
M Evans (Think he just showed enough to earn a chance to redeem himself)
T Mcdonald (a very good Back player if he is fit good for running out of half back)
J Mcdonald (put in half a performance so made him sub)

True... But popolopolos slipped too many of his tackles... I swear every time he shrugged a tackle it was strauss trying to lay it.
Maybe keep him in but don't have him tagging someone? Was he actually tagging Puopolo or was he just there every time he got the ball

Wasn't tagging him, just playing defensively on him - also played on a couple of others, half our team got beaten by their man.

Strauss did get beaten, but he put in an honest effort.

True, true, i suppose at least he did try to lay a tackle... More than can be said for some of our players.
I'm sold give him another run. Which ultimately means neeld will drop him, along with dawes, matt jones, and evans.

In: Magner, Sylvia and Jetta
Out: Pederson, J. MacDonald and N. Jones (he looked sore towards the end and 1 game off to rest up)

Are you insane? Rest Nathan JONES on Queen's Birthday Monday?

Yes. IF he did get hurt yesterday, the rest can only do him good.
If he isn't hurt then no, play him, but i would much rather play it safe if there is any doubt as to his fitness. I'd rather miss him for one game (which we will most likely get pumped in) then out for 3 or 4 games we may win

Gee, sorry for ruining your day by having a different opinion mate. I'l just blindly follow your lead

Okay mate. You tell our best player that he looked a little sore and will be rested in our biggest game of the season, the week before the bye.

In's Sylvia, Blease, Gawn, Magnar, Taggert, T Macdonald
Outs Rodan, Frawley, Macdonald, Pederson, Bail, Fitzy

Toumpas to play 1 game in the ressies to get his confidence up. No point throwing him to the lions on Monday ala Jack Watts when he was 17.

Like the last bit; think that Pedo, Rodan and Macdonald will all stay in though (and should)

What are our thoughts on Gawn for Fitzy?

Gawn responded very well in the VFL - but Fitz probably deserves another chance even though he was poor.

I dont rate Fitz based on what I've seen at AFL level, but to be fair he has been on the list awhile and a proven VFL performer, so I'd be happy to give him 4 or 5 games in a row. He needs the backing of the coach for a month, that might give him the confidence to play his game. If he is still looking like a fish out of water after a few games in a row, then at least we know where he is at.
