Judging by some of these posts, people obviously want us losing by a record 200+ points.

Who would have thought that, if we were given our current scenario at the start of the season (ie. it's Rd 9 and wholesale changes were on the cards because we're as bad as we've ever been and seemingly getting worse by the week), that Lester and Bewick would be amongst the first names in the safe/automatic selection camp?

Out: D. Beams, C. Beams, Bell, Taylor, Rich
In: Mathieson, Evans, Robertson, Paine or Andrews, Hipwood

B: Gardiner, Merrett, Harwood
HB: Hanley, Paine or Andrews, Bewick
C: Mayes, Robinson, Paparone
HF: Christensen, Schache, Keays
F: Green, Walker, Lester
R: Martin, Bastinac, Zorko
IC: Mathieson, Evans, Robertson, Hipwood

I'm not sure I agree with all the calls for Taylor to be dropped.

He's been played forward mostly, even as our deepest forward sometimes. With the midfield performing badly and sweet FA ball going into the forward line, what exactly have we been expecting him to do?

I agree, his effort hasn't been amazing... but he's usually A1 in that department. It's one of his strengths. When the whole team's pressure and contested effort has been so bad, it's pretty hard for a small forward to do their thing. It's also pretty hard for a third year player, who's one of the smallest in the comp, to put in huge contested efforts and bring manic pressure when 90% of the team isn't putting in. I just feel like it's a little harsh on Squiz to be getting called out for it. He hasn't been great, but not many have.

He's going to a super player and I reckon we should generally keep playing him this year. He may need a rest, maybe this week even, but he's one we gotta keep playing and gotta make sure re-signs. I don't think "some time in the twos" would have any real benefit to anyone.

If he needs a rest, sure, if not, play him.
Yeah, I agree with that.

In: Mathieson, McStay, West/Smith
Out: Green, Taylor, DBeams

FB: Merrett, Gardiner, McStay
HB: Hanley, Harwood, CBeams
C: Bewick, Rich, Zorko
HF: Lester, Paparone, Christensen
FF: West/Smith, Walker, Schache
Foll: Martin, Robinson, Bastinac
Int: Mathieson, Mayes, Keayes, Bell

Mayes, CBeams, Paparone to rotate between HB, HF and bench. Leppa has ruined these blokes by trying to make them half backs. The same was done w Lester last year. Trying to make him a Patful replacement. He's nowhere playing well in the forward line. Let's see if it works: roll these guys in front of the ball. They've got to be on par w Green and Taylor. Maybe their defensive pressure would be valuable. CBeams is an excellent kick... Would be valuable up front. Paps seems to have been told he's not allowed to kick or lost confidence in his own disposal. Looks a different player to last year.

If Green plays I want him in defence. He'll suck at it but at least his lack of effort will be exposed. Poor little Lewy is out of form and just needs to regain confidence.

Mathieson, Keayes to have midfield minutes. Essentially replacing Beams and Rockliff. Mayes, Hanley can have the odd run in there too.

Martin to play some midfield time off West/Smith. I think it's time we played two ruckman. Stef is a legend but it's not working at the moment. We need to TRY something in this department.

Im really loving what they have done. As the team gets better so will they.

I would like to see Lewis Taylor played as a genuine mid. Surely Leppa has to throw around a few different positions as well as swing the axe a little. An example would be to move Taylor into the middle and throw Rich forward. Lewy gets a chance to play midfield and Richy gets a chance to see how hard it is to be a small forward when your midfield doesn't give a shit.

I think it is also time to put Green down back, play him on the smallest forward, he needs the chance to develop another side to his game, and we need someone who can carry the ball out of the backline at speed.

Mcstays a given. This is the only game all year that he puts in.

What are people's thoughts on the possibility of matho coming in off missing the last 2 weeks playing? And considering the time he was out for his cheek bone. Big ground in the G. I want him in as much as the next, just putting out there.I think he should have played in the 2s on the weekend rather than be emergency. The clubs choice in emergencies puzzled me. In hindsight you have 2 guys in need of game time and if there was no late change, they aren't playing consecutive weeks. As it turned out, Green played seniors when clearly underdone and Matho misses again.

Well said. Matho should either have played Sat night or if he wasn't in the team he had to play reserves and get a game under his belt. I can't see them picking him this week due to the fact he hasn't played in two weeks.

I still can't figure out what the hell we were doing with our emergencies. We named Green - Matho and West!! If we knew McStay was in doubt we should have had Hipwood as an emergency.

Leppa needs more help it's simple.

Shouldn't drop Taylor, call him out and put him i the square, his proper position. Good team tho in the circs.

Taylor was a stand out mid and Geelong had big wraps on him.His speed and quick hands are invaluable, not every mid has to be the same...the doggies have a big range of types in this role.

Anyone from Victoria, going to the game?

I'll be there again. Do I want to? Not really, but my love of the club and the jumper keeps me coming back for more and more, but not for the first time in recent years, my patience is wearing thin. Family and friends think I'm mad, but there must be a sense of madness that goes against every bit of logic within that harbours a turnaround.

Can't recall the last time I missed a Vic and WA based game, including those down at Kardinia Park.

I also make an annual pilgrimage to Brisbane a few times a year, but I am losing energy and my enthusiasm is seriously waning.

Why? Because for too long the club and even many here constantly spout the same shit that next year will see development and a rise up the ladder and without fail, you can make arguments that we continue to regress and of course we do. We are unable to attract players, coaches and assistants, sponsors, facilities and our three powerful media figure-heads in Matthews, Brown and Lynch are nothing but limp.

To top it off, the AFL continues to serve our club a shit sandwich usually at the bequest of the powerful Vic based clubs which our club is no threat and to be honest, after years of being sold hope, I just can't see it anymore. I can't see us making finals any time soon, let alone even coming close to winning a flag in this era of the AFL.

I am surprised by the number of people who have McStay coming back in. We lacked effort on the weekend and if there is one player who has epitomised lack of effort over the last 18 months it has been McStay. I am not sure why you would bring him in when you want to send a message that the team actually needs to work hard.

The Barometer: Round 9

BRISBANE LIONS

INJURIES

Dayne Beams (knee) TBC
Daniel McStay (groin) test
Harris Andrews (foot) test
Hugh Beasley (back) 2 weeks
Michael Close (wrist and foot) 3 weeks
Tom Cutler (shoulder) 3 weeks
Cian Hanley (groin) indefinite
Jaden McGrath (foot) indefinite
Tom Rockliff (hamstring) 1 week
Sam Skinner (knee) 5 weeks
Josh Watts (groin) 1 week

ON THE BLOCK: The club will closely monitor the troublesome knee of midfield star Dayne Beams who sat out the fourth quarter against the Magpies. They will need to manage the knee for the rest of the season and expect him to need further surgery at the end of the year. Lewis Taylor had two touches up to halftime after being given a reprieve by the match committee. He was dropped for the trip to Adelaide in Round 7 and gave nothing in his return. The Lions should swing the axe after the woeful performance against Collingwood but do not have the depth for wholesale changes.

ON THE CUSP: Key defender Harris Andrews will have the moon boot taken off on Monday and have his foot arch ligament problem assessed again. Contested ball animal Rhys Mathieson could make his senior debut given Brisbane’s appalling contested footy numbers. Key forward Jono Freeman found some form in the NEAFL with four goals along with first-year forward Eric Hipwood who also booted four majors. Midfielder Billy Evans was Brisbane’s best in the reserves with three goals and plenty of the footy while ruckman Archie Smith was strong along with Nick Robertson. Tom Rockliff is at least another week away from returning.

GREG DAVIS’S FORECAST: More pain. Brisbane have been terrible on the road in 2016 so they’ll start at long odds to beat Melbourne at the MCG. They are hopelessly out of form and devoid of confidence. The effort in the first half against the Pies was nothing short of pathetic and they simply must give some sort of response. Careers are on the line. A week of soul searching awaits the club.

MELBOURNE

INJURIES

Angus Brayshaw (concussion) test
Jay Kennedy-Harris (hamstring) 2 weeks
Dean Kent (back) TBC
Mitch King (knee) season
Heritier Lumumba (concussion) test
Aaron vandenBerg (ankle) 2 weeks

ON THE BLOCK: Some match-review action might open up some spots with Bernie Vince (again) and Neville Jetta to come under scrutiny. The air went out of the tyres of a few of the Demons young guns with Josh Wagner (14 possessions), Jayden Hunt (9) and Viv Michie (13) against the Bulldogs. The defence was also leaky so the big body and experience of Lynden Dunn might be required to return.

ON THE CUSP: Chris Dawes’ name appeared in the goalkickers at Casey but he’s likely to have an extended time in the reserves to get match fitness. Alex Neal-Bullen was best on ground and should get another look-in while former Port Adelaide midfielder Ben Newton also featured in the best.

SCOTT GULLAN’S FORECAST: Get a free hit with a MCG match-up with Brisbane. Does Max Gawn need a rest? Been down the last couple of weeks and might be something the Dees consider. Veteran Jack Grimes was close last week as was Oscar McDonald so look for them to get another taste.

So pretty much a full strength Demons to another Lions injury list from hell.

If I were Melbourne and wanting to play someone into form, I'd be bringing in Chris Dawes.

We are coming down, mainly because we booked flights a while ago, but when you are on your knees getting the you know what belted out of you thats when you need people to hang tough with you. I have seen enough of it in my personal and business life and its all too easy to throw your hands up and say "thats it I'm off".
I started following VFL with North Melbourne but when the Bears were born that was it for me, they were my team being a Queenslander, born and bred. So I've been through the rubbish years and then had the glory days of the threepeat and now the tough times again. That was tough being at the Gabba Saturday night, but can always temper that with nights walking away from Etihad after beating North in 2001 with their supporters shaking their heads at how good we were, or Essendon supporters lining up for a beer at half time at the MCG on Grand Final and saying "I think we are in trouble here".
Of course, nothing matches being surrounded by Collingwood supporters in the Great Southern Stand in 2002 and belting out the club song. So yes, we are doing it tough at them moment, but it wont always be like this, just makes the good times so much sweeter for those with a bit of ticker to see it out.

The Barometer: Round 9

predominantly defenders ~ 6 of 11
elite mids ~ 2 of 11
and 3 of 11 with only 18 games between them

injury barometer?
defender shortage = get lots scored against
lack of elite mids = poor clearance, lack of quality forward entry = struggle to score

The big question ought to be, Where's the Run-And-Gun footy????

Wearing an old Fitzroy Guernsey this weekend. Pencil us in for a win..

No we're not:

THE BRISBANE Lions will wear a 1916-style Fitzroy jumper to commemorate its Hall of Fame match in round 14 after the club's fans chose it from three alternatives. The guernsey, to be worn against Richmond at the MCG on June 25, will sport a Fitzroy monogram in place of the lion and will boast a diamond jubilee watermark in the background.
