In fact with Henry, I reckon if you went back and looked at it, he should have had more score involvements if anyone inside 50 could hold a mark. He had a couple of awesome kicks to Switta, Darcy and Jackson where they were dropped. Yes, he also completely ****ed two up
"we need players who take more risks with their kicking"

player takes more risks with his ball movement

"skills not up to it"

This might end up in the hill I’d die on thread, but go back to the draft where Carltank forced us to take Henry so early and we end up taking Young, Serong and Tom Green (GWS). Midfield is set forever (and no longer one-sized), Henry takes his time to develop at the appropriate speed without the expectation and we don’t go into the following season’s draft with a points deficit.

yeah except we wouldn’t get Tom Green under any circumstance, so there’s that

I haven’t seen all of yesterday’s game as I am away from home, and in particular I missed O’Meara’s goals. I will try and catch them on WatchAfl soon.

There is obviously a million and 1 things we could do, but I think one of them should be to commit to a forward structure for 4 weeks or more and that forward structure should include at least 2 of Treacy, Amiss and Sturt as they are natural forwards and are our future, if we have a future of value. Give them some simple patterns and tactics, with Sonny to provide guidance, and build on that over the 4 weeks. If there is no sign of it working then set another structure and go round again. This means Fyfe doesn’t come in for the moment, but he may need time to get over the foot and then a run in the WAFL to find touch.

I am particularly unhappy with big Sean’s form. He was half the player in 2022 as 2021, and, to date, he has succeeded in halving that again. I don’t know what is going on there, but we need to fix it.

We couldn't get Tom Green though, we were only able to move up to pick 9 because Liam was academy
I do agree we shouldn't have matched at 9, that was too early a pick for him

Yeah I cant disagree more, his decision making is catching up and his running has improved out of sight. Plenty of other players are making poor decisions without being crucified.

In criteria I would rate highly for him he is:
  • 6th in pressure acts
  • 3rd score involvements
  • 9th intercept possessions
  • 10th worst for clangers
  • 12th metres gained (though it looks like it's bugged because Ryan has 748.3 on average apparently)
  • 4th on inside 50

Honestly, the fact you'd drop him before Hughes is just mind blowing to me. Hughes is adding absolutely nothing and emblematic of all our ball movement problems
Also leading the club for goal assists right at this point in time (with 3, Serong is next with 2).

I’m between both of you guys on this Henry argument.
He’s definitely improved since last year. That’s much is clear and it’s a positive.
He has good skills, and seems to be able to cover ground better this season.
My biggest concern is his decision making. I think he takes the wrong kick at times still, and that’s there hardest think to coach out of a player. There was 2 or 3 examples of it yesterday that cost us scores.
Overall he’s a work in progress. Still a way to go to be an established AFL player but it’s not impossible.
I have him well ahead of Hughes TBH.
I'd pretty much be exactly where you are. I'm not arguing he's a gun, his decision making is still very flawed but I'd rather what he's trying to do then the safe shit most of the team is putting out.

His goals were both on tight angles from about 40 to 45 meters out. Looked very assured lining up for goal.

Sean Darcy was deplorable last night. Dropped everything and was beaten by Goldstein around the ground. Lacked work rate.

We couldn’t get green but we could have gotten Chad Warner if we had kept pick 32 or whatever it was we eventually traded to match Henry bid. That would have required all time great levels of drafting however

I thought we put the "paid too much for Henry" story to bed when we would've taken Chappy in round 1 the next year anyway?

Anyway changes....

Out: Tabs, Banfield, Hughes

In: Treacy, Sturt, NOD

No point mortgaging getting games into the players who will more likely be part of a first premiership by trying to stop Melbourne getting a higher pick, who cares

Now that’s a hill I could get used to!

Treacy didn’t play last night. He will need to get a game in before being called up. No one gets dropped after 3 disposals, doesn’t play the following week then gets called up.

Neither of them were amazing goals but they were not easy shots either, and he showed great composure when it was all or nothing. David Mundy-esque in that respect.

Sean Darcy was deplorable last night. Dropped everything and was beaten by Goldstein around the ground. Lacked work rate.

Darcy missed two easy marks directly in front and additionally passed off the ball twice leading to a turnover goal when he should have been shooting for goal himself. He also got annihilated in the ruckman by Goldstein - the old war horse seemed to out run him. It was embarrassing. Nothing to do with Jackson.

I’m officially worried about where Darcy is headed. He was looking at being one of the premier rucks in the competition. I’d say now he wouldn’t be in the top 10.

Small sample but I would be playing him forward next week tbh it was that impressive. Good routine. Kicked straight through the ball. No stupid round the corner bullshit.

I have no doubt in Henry’s skills and his ability to pick off the difficult kick. My concern is he is probably one of the softest players I have even seen. I understand we need outside players but that doesn’t hide the fact when it’s your time to take the hit or lay the tackle you have to do it. He has cost momentum constantly during his career so far, it’s alright to do the fancy things but would take someone like a Matt De boer in the team over henry any day.

Was it Henry also that kicked to Tabs in the 2nd quarter where Tabs eventually took too long to take his set shot?

Walters is brilliant at organising the forward line. Like telling spoons like banfield not to stand in the space the other forwards are trying to lead into. The moment he came on the fwd line looked more organised.
I still shake my head at people calling for him to be retired last year .
Do yourself a favour and look up his goals per finals game record .
Shits on the best of them and I mean the best of them.

Well Belnakor reckoned he should have been gone the year before last.

Completely fair but he's been a lot better at that this year. Has taken some noticeably big hits and put his body on the line as needed for the most part. Still something he needs to keep getting better at to be at the required level

If we going on performance based assessment of who gets dropped, then surely $900k Jackson needs to take a week off and have a good think about it. But he’s not alone in that department and needing to have a week off to have think about their effort and desire.

And the way the Eagles are playing so far against the Giants, we are going have our pants pulled down and embarrassed next week if we don’t improve significantly 😕
