Alternatively he could just start actually playing the lockdown roleVenables did get the lockdown job on one of the games best rebounding defenders in Lachie Whitfield. 2018 All Australian Half Back Flank. Argueably the b.o.g if we had of lost the game.
Venables needs to be moved to the wing and stop playing this lockdown role in our fwd line.
So given you saw the WAFL game, you are probably the most qualified to judge Cripps. Wouldn’t bring him in? Fitness issue you think or just needs to shake off the rust and get his touch in the WAFL?The 7-8-7 model and this weeks potential changes :
Backs : Gov, sexual, Bunga, Shepp, Jetts, duggo and TC
Mids : thickey, Vardy, yeo, shue, shred, redden, Hutch and masto
Forwards : Jk, JD, oallen, flyin, petch, Venners and smith
Ordinarily after a 52 point win with no known injuries you'd expect no changes. However, there's one definite (Gaff) and one probable/possible (Cripps) change
Gaff looked rusty in the JLT games and it'll be all but 4 weeks since his last hitout come Saturday's bouncedown between games for him so that's not likely to have improved. However he was our best mid prior to his brain fart so walks back into the team
Cripps is less clear cut. Fully fit he is comfortably best 22 and another experienced head in the front half wouldn't go astray. Problem is he's not 100% fit and has had very limited match practice so you'd expect there's still a deal of rust. He also has a history of taking time to find his best form after a layoff. So do we roll the dice and play him on a big game when we already have two others (JK and GAGF) short of touch or stick with a winning team and give him another week in the WAFL to regain touch
Does a less than 100% Cripps offer more than the player he replaces and who might that be
So who's the unlucky player(s) to miss out - most likely its between Smith, Venables and masten with Ryan and petch the only other two maybes but o doubt either of those two miss
Smith is the most obvious, especially if there's two changes. However, given that he played as a forward against the Giants dropping smith for gaff means we are playing an extra mid (not a silly idea against a loaded pies midfield to be fair) or one of the current mids is moved forward if we are to retain the 7-8-7 structure - something I think simmo is loathe to do after 2017
I think they'll play Cripps though (I wouldn't) which means smith loses his chair and the match committee toss a coin between Venables and masten. Either would be unlucky and I'm sitting on the fence
Tough decision but a good position for the club to be in
When you think that one of our best from the GF, Schoey, still wouldn't be playing even if he was match fit (he isn't) it highlights the strength of our depth down to about the 30th player on our list
Didn't see the WAFL game against East freo so just going on reports that Cripps was on managed minutes and looked rusty. Personally I don't see the need to rush him back but I suspect they will especially if the fitness staff say he'll be right to play a full, or close to full, gameSo given you saw the WAFL game, you are probably the most qualified to judge Cripps. Derby return imo.
Gaff was rusty as in the last JLT game. It could have just been the issues of playing Freo again, not sure.
Should he just be a walk up start?
Surely Gaff’s rustiness in JLT means he needs to be played sooner rather than later? He’s integral to our b2b ambitions.Gaff was rusty as in the last JLT game. It could have just been the issues of playing Freo again, not sure.

Josh Smith is a terrific back-up role player.
Got to respect him for that. Seems a great bloke too.
But surely makes way for more talented players who are ready.
Looking forward to this game. Hopefully it's a ripper. Still think you'll win though!
Duggan in doubt with a knee and changing direction.
Screams do not play him v Pies. Pies are quick and agile.
Duggan comes out Gaff comes in. Smirh can play wing or back. He will be pumped to show his old club they erred in cutting him. He will also know a fair bit aboutwho does what.
Think Schofield is a bit underdone to come straight back in.

When I watched the game replay Duggan didn’t appear to be hindered one bit after he came back on .. He had a great sprint up through the middle and was jumping for marks and spoiling ok ..
I expect Duggan to play ..

Ryan had a poor game. Might be feeling the pressure if Petch keeps up his form and Rioli and Cripps are available for selection.
