Not sure how the playoffs work, but apparently we have Madrid or Munich.

Winner plays atletico or leverkusen.
Think it’s 9-24 playoff based on table so 9 v 24, 10 v 23 etc. Real and Bayern on same gd and pts so not sure how they split that.

One of the top 2 teams in the left column play one of the two teams below them (i.e Monaco play either PSG or Benfica, Brest get the other team) and the winners of those two matches play one of the teams in the second column.

Still no idea how this works with seeding. Liverpool are obviously the 1 seed so are we at the top or at the bottom?

Does only one of Brest, Monaco, Benfica and PSG get through to potentially play us? But then they also potentially play Barcelona?

Confused.

Sounds like they are still doing a random draw from the looks of things to determine the matchups tomorrow.

Ah yes that explains other chart someone posted. So 9/10 to draw against either 23/24 etc. Bit weird

So looking at that, we could possibly see a Milan derby, Madrid derby, City v Leverkusen, Barca/Liverpool vs PSG, Juventus v Arsenal all in the last 16.
Might be time to add Stan Sports...yet another bloody subscription 🤦‍♂️

I did see some rumours of Optus offloading their PL rights to Stan Sport, which would be great if it did happen

Disagree, Optus Sport is great.
The first few years of it were farcical (2018 World Cup in particular) with constant stream crashes and laughably poor picture quality.

It’s gotten better in recent years but it’s still only available in 1080p on certain devices and the rest are stuck in 720p. Stan offers 4K on most if not all fixtures.

When you watch the UEFA competitions on Stan in 4K the difference between Stan and Optus is night and day.

The fact that I can watch AFL in 4K and not the PL in 2025 is pretty poor IMO.

Yeah, I still don't understand why the picture cannot be improved. Watching it on Fox Sports in HD was glorious.

Little bit more jeopardy going into the last game than normal but still who you expect to go through.

2023-24: 3 Italian teams, 4 Spanish, 3 German, 2 English, 1 Portuguese, 1 French, 1 Dutch, 1 Danish.
2024-25 (extra 8 teams): 4 Italian, 3 Spanish, 3 German, 4 English, 2 Portuguese, 4 French (the surprise), 2 Dutch, 1 Scottish, 1 Belgian.

The lesser teams also got spanked fairly regularly too with 3 teams conceded 3 or more goals per game.

I know it’d never happen because of greed, but it would be so much better if there was no play-off safety net. Top 16 go through, bottom 20 go out. That would be real drama and real jeopardy.

It’s a bit silly that we went through all that, and only 12 teams are eliminated.

It's pretty confusing until they do the draws. For each play off pairings there are 4 possibilities. For example, PO1 and PO8
could be (I think)

PO1 Monaco PSG
PO8 Brest Benfica
or
PO1 Brest PSG
PO8 Monaco Benfica
or
PO1 Monaco Benfica
PO8 Brest PSG
or
PO1 Brest Benfica
PO8 Monaco PSG

The winners of PO1 and PO8 will play either Liverpool or Barcelona in the round of 16. There's another draw on 21 February to decide that. Maybe they could have done both draws on 31 January but it will become clear as the tournament progresses.

Pretty similar to the Euros where 24 teams started and 16 went through to the knockout stage. Slovenia got in despite not winning a game. (drawing all 3)

That really didnt clear anything up but I appreciate you trying haha.

So confusing :D

Ill just wait for the draw.

Yeah this. Just 8 extra games to eliminate 12 teams who shouldnt even be in the CL anyways.

I think an improvement would be if next round was 1 game only, at home for teams 9 to 16.
Otherwise it is an improvement, but it feels a bit long for the teams potentially playing 11 games in 4.5 months across January to May.

It brackets sides in groups of two. You're bracketed with Barcelona. Inter and Arsenal are 3 and 4 etc etc.
Just like a tennis bracket you're the 4 corners and cannot meet until the SF at the earliest.

The draw tonight is to determine where in the brackets clubs fall. 1-4 on the outer corners. 5-8 in the middle sections.
And the higher you finish the lower your seeded knockout bracket that gets paired with you. Those sides being the worst of the seeded teams get the highest non seeded teams.

So providing that the higher ranked sides win their playoffs it'd see the clubs 1-8 getting opponents that are increasingly harder as you go down.

Designed to reward those that finish higher. So you as an example are paired with the lowest knockout seed. Then the if you win the R16 tie you're bracketed with the lowest R16 qualifiers (7-8). And so on.
