was out all year with an ACL so moved up the CD rankings. also had a good write up on The Roar by a blogger, plus he kept rookie listed journeyman and part time forward j.townsend to 2 goals in a grand final, so easily top 5

Well we do have the best forward line

People do understand how how CD works? It’s purely based on how they rate players and very little to do with team performance.

Grimes and Neville Jetta imo are the 2 best pure defenders in the comp but neither are high possession winners so wouldn’t be ranked very high by the CD system. Conversely Essendon has a lot of high possession winners who might not be great defenders ranked higher cos they get a lot of touches.

It’s a great tool for fantasy and understanding how teams play but not a great tool for judging teams.

Its just one way of utilising stats. Keep saying it stats in isolation are useless.

Bang on Mopsy. The stats themselves are good, just the analysis can't take everything into account. Historical data (some might say hysterical)

Stats have never been (or shouldn't be) an end point, they are merely a starting point for further analysis. In a game of uncertainty, stats give the coach a quick snapshot of what just happened. At it's most basic, in roulette if a red number comes up 5 times in a row, statistically based on the law of averages black is better chance than red next spin. But it is not the case, both still have nearly a 50/50 chance next spin. Stats are nearly always historical.

They highlight trends within though, like Melbourne overused the ball with lots of possessions while West Coast were more direct with tighter disposal chains and thus was one of the reasons West Coast won. Goodwin knows that and he'll be tightening the focus on their ball use and metres gained per possession. They will be training ways to achieve that, just like the Tigers did in 2017 pre-season. Stats help identify what can be fixed or changed, relevant to the opposing conditions - that's all. It predicts almost nothing.

Champion Data overall list rating: 3rd

The Tigers boast the best forward line in the competition, with boom recruit Tom Lynch joining reigning Coleman Medal winner Jack Riewoldt in attack. The formidable duo will also have the support of Josh Caddy and Daniel Rioli, two proven match winners in 2018. It’s perhaps surprising to note that Champion Data rates the Tigers’ defence as the sixth best in the AFL, given the strength of Alex Rance, David Astbury and Dylan Grimes. On face value the club’s rating as the eighth best midfield also seems perverse given it boasts two Brownlow medallists. But Richmond lost a heap of depth to its engine room in the trade period.

Rise, hold or fall? Rise

Champion Data. Were talking shit is mandatory. Developed by nerds with a computer that were never picked in a school yard. **** off

In real life, they are as useful as a ****-flavoured lollipop.

i imagine that would be pretty useful for those with some small amount curiosity (not enough curiosity to sample the real thing). I'd say more useful than Champion Data who just leave you feeling more confused than before.

CH Data ranked Betts nearly double that of Grimes in the GF. That just about sums it up.
That's pretty close to the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard/seen/read.

I just had a look, Betts 48pts, Grimes 25pts.
The biggest joke was Grimes 25 was the lowest ranking for both sides, and from memory the Hun gave him 8/10 and Age 7/10 and I think both papers gave Betts 3/10.

It’s not a joke it’s just how CD works. The system simply cannot rate a players performance off the ball.

It’s a wonderful tool but it is a tool with flaws that needs to be used in the correct fashion.
