But I'm the crazy one who buys choc chip HCBs and then puts Vegemite on them

The other really good way of using choc chip HCBs is get a single serve ramekin which is a perfect fit for the bun - after cutting it in half, fill with either choc spread or simply chocolate and then turn it into an individual serve bread & butter pudding idea
I grew up being learning from my dad that Vegemite goes on everything - mum's freshly baked scones (one of the few things she cooked when I was growing up as it was dad's kitchen) and we'd both top them with butter & Vegemite
Fruit loaf when toasted was topped with butter & Vegemite, and then it's turned into Vegemite on hot cross buns

I confess to having tried the apple and cinnamon, not bad, but one was enough.

Your mention of donuts made me think of Ferguson Plarre who last year had a 'jam donut hot cross buns'
It looked nothing like a hot cross buns, tasted nothing like one but rather a lil square sweet bun with a hole in the top filled with donut jam
