Cameron Guthrie 2015 -

Frees for - 3
Frees against - 13

He simply opponent watches at stoppages, which the stat above proves. Whether he's taken a run-with role or not (he doesn't tag), it's poor. Even when he's in best position to attack the ball, he misses opportunities and isn't hard enough as he's following his man around - without hard physical pressure, just follows. Pointless!

Not hard enough at the man or more importantly THE BALL to be a midfielder period. the stats above are damning. Running off of half back is all he'll be useful for. The trouble there is, he's one paced.

Toiler.

Why the question mark, the proposition is simply bs.
Incidentally, Stanley, Clark, Enright and Duncan have similar FF/FA figures.

Duncan the only one comparable there, as he's played in the midifield in a similar role. Mind you, he played the first 3-4 games in defence (stupidity). He seemingly took Guthrie's spot as he was ineffective in the midfield / got torn up.

Duncan has had 2 more frees for, and sure, he isn't a hard nut. But need I start in terms of Duncan's effectiveness compared to Guthrie's?? Duncan is far superior in all facets in terms of offence. He looked splendid before getting injured.

Guthrie is just average to poor in all areas atm. Doesn't hurt the opposition, tags poorly, doesn't get enough of the footy, contested game is poor, etc. At 75 games it doesn't look good. Now, after Saturday night's disgraceful effort (11 touches at 54%), his attitude looks shot too. How much faith can one have?

Your proposition was that Guthrie's FF/FA figures of 3-13 "proves" that he "simply opponent watches at stoppages". As a matter of logic it "proves" no such thing, and the proposition is bs.

The fact that he barely touches the ball may prove the he simply opponent watches at stoppages. I still dont know what position he should play.

You don't get it then, obviously.

The stats show he's getting beaten to the ball over and over again. His opponents always have a higher possession count, often when the opposition is on the receiving end of a belting. He's simply poor as a midfielder. Positions himself wrong, lacks physical pressure, just looks lost at most stoppages.

Join the dots.

Or come up with something positive for the guy, I'm still yet to see anything of the contrary for a 75 game player with expectations of filling the shoes of our outgoing mids. Big shoes? Sure... But Guthrie's feet are puny.

Smug answer, yet nothing to back it up.... again.

Struggling.
C'mon you've carried this Guthrie stuff over into another thread. If anyone is struggling it's you, you haven't exactly 'backed anything up' so far. He's actually improved in some areas, not regressed.

I don't think he's a taggers arseh*le but if we allow him to play as a normally functioning mid he'll be quite good for us.

Well, I suggested he be dropped with the hope of getting some fire into the guy... several responses prompted me to back-up my point, which I've done. He's soft. He's not a ball winner. He's not physical... at all. He's not quick. His disposal efficiency is average. Can't tag. Averages 18 disposals a game.

His performance in 2015 for a midfielder is well below par, fact. The only space I'll give him is - Scott obviously realised this after 3-4 games and switched him with Duncan, who played very, very well. The club thought enough of Guthrie to start him in the middle over Duncan in 2015, big wrap, he failed. Our stoppage work early in the season was deplorable.

Remove Selwood and we're comfortably the worst midfield in the league (Guthrie / Caddy not stepping up, Blicavs the BIG +). That's a big claim, try shooting that one down!! Well?

If we had no injuries Guthrie wouldn't be in the midfield anyway. Smells to me like Taylor Hunt all over again.

His two games before this weekend were the easy win against Carlton and bad loss to West Coast. 23 and 20 touches respectively, 6 clearances in each game, 13 and 11 contested possessions, 4 and 3 tackles. Perfectly acceptable numbers for a 22 year old in his second year as a follower.

Stats aside, he's obviously spent a lot less time on the ball than last year. Didn't have his best game on Saturday but was fine. As SJ IIRC said, who gives a damn about an average game in a big win when he was one of our best in a bad loss the week earlier. His two games in the losses to Hawthorn late last year were also excellent, can clearly stand up when the team isn't going well.

Taken you 10 weeks to find your new Varcoe.
Do you always need a player to target?
Write a post, come back next day and see how the spot fire has spread?

There's your stats to back it up right there. Can't argue with any of that....but wait for it...
