From what i saw tonight...isnt it refreshing to see new angles. better commentary and no more BRUCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! I thought roving camera boundary was great and added alot to the game...I have my doubts that this could actually be done for a home & away game..The actual presentation at the start and on screen are far suprior than to c7 and im looking forward to next yr..I just hope they dont employ robbo....!! Dont be surprised next year if we have a something on the ground that detects the sounds of the game like they do in american sport....Keep up the good work...

I thought ch9's presentation was very slick for a first go. They had the umpires miked up and selectively turned their mikes up to hear what was going on. Yes, ch7 had done this in previous years but left their mikes on all the time. No one wants to hear the umpire calling "play on play on" all the time. ch9 always get on wit the job without patting themselves on the back. I always cringed when Bruce said "Good call boys" or "have a good call boys". Very unprofessional.

meh, I didnt see anything particuarly special about the C9 coverage. The rail camera thing is practically impossible for an AFL game due to the curved boundry and lack of space there. The same can be said for most of the camera angles.
All I derived from that is that they took their rugby stuff and used it because the field was the right shape for it.
As for the ump mike... do we really need to hear an umpire? Their decisions are usually pretty obvious (though not always correct), and I don't see how hearing as well as seeing it matters.
There really wrong with the coverage, but nothing special either. C7, C9 no real diff.

Oh and can I just say that I hope to god that Ed doesn't commentate next year. He nearly sent me to sleep despite the good game on the field.

One more thing. Wouldn't it be amusing to have both Dipper and Billy boundry riding the same game :)

We can only compare the International Rules coverage not AFL coverage as we haven't seen it yet. From what I saw, Channel 9 had better production. They also had super-slow-mo camera's at the match which is something Channel 7 didn't have in '99.

There's no reason why a rail camera can't be used at a higher angle, outside the fence. As for the curved rail, I didn't know that rails only were made in straight lines... Those people who make railway tracks must work miracles. Anyway, how quickly we forget that the SOMO used a curved rail camera on the bend of the athletics track at the Olympics.

By hearing an explanation a decision, people are more likely to be be happier with the decision and actually find out the umpire is right more often than people give them credit for.

So they are going to give up crowd seats for a track camera?
I don't think so. I didn't say it couldn't be done, I said it would be too impractical to work at an AFL venue.

you cant use a rail camera on the ground as players can easily run into it

as for higher angle or outside the fence....what about the spectators?? I doubt someone would want their view impeded by an annoying camera zooming past all the time.

I was thnking more along the lines in the forward 50m. They could set up a rail on the first level advertising boards. Wouldn't be too hard, if they left it there. Ch9 is doing all friday night matches so I would have thought they would have their best equipment for those matches.

I once saw NBC have a "rail" camera that off the ground for an NBA game. It was about 5-10 metres off the ground. It looked impressive.

What Channel 9 should really get is that camera that was used for the SuperBowl earlier in the year. It was similar to the technology used for "The Matrix". However, from what I've heard it's very expensive to use.

Maybe Channel 10 should get it for their Grand Final coverage. That would be good.

Yes, its very expensive, cant remember what the exact figure however i remember thinking "thats about 100 times more than i would of though it'd be". Definetaly too expensive to use on a weekly basis, and proabbly too expensive to use for one off in a grand final.

IMHO Dwayne Russell is the best commentator going around - I'll miss him in the garden next year calling ABC Grandstand.....s'pose I'll watch more footy on Ch9.

As for camera - I thought Colonial was built to have such techno things spinning around under it's roof etc. At the MCG last weekend to see the Aussies train, I checked in on the redevelopment exhibition and some bloke there said the new northern stand would contain special cameras - a moving one along the fence line of the first level would be fabulous judging by last night's performance.

McGuire ABSOLUTELY sh*t me!! talk about boring! That other guy from the sunday footy show was a drip too.

Thank god for Leathal Leigh!

Channel 9 youve got a lot to learn. Sam Newman should really think about his comments raggin' 7 now.

I thought there commentating was no different to channel 7.

hehehe same old coverage as Rugby League. Same old nothing new.

I guess being from Sydney you get used to Ch9 coverage of all things sport.

The mikes were good. Eddy was not. He wants to do everything that guy.

Billy was shocking, i hope they employ better boundary riders. I cringed everytime they crossed to billy. Is dipper going to Ch9?

The interviewing of Lyon and Eddy refering to him as gazz made it look all to "boys club" and more like it was a TCN9 side v the irish. Unprofessional.

All in all i didnt find it that differant to Ch7. Dwayne was good. I like him. If you listen closely he sounds a bit like Sandy Roberts.
