Then we win the flag and he wins the Norm Smith....

Then Pendles hands over the Captaincy and we we go Back 2 Back and he becomes a PRemiership Captain....

Yes a hell of a player - on a related note - if you want to see a truly dominant big man although not ruckman the three year career of John Greening is one of pure joy mixed with infinite sadness.

Thanks very much jonbe54. I loved that. What a talent and yes, incredibly sad. I hope that thug Jim O’Dea has been and will be haunted by this every day until his demise. What a prick.

O'Dea is one level and agree a prick, but look at St.Kilda's behavior after the fact.

Go to the St.Kilda football club and check out their honor roll.

O'Dea features prominently.

Tells you all you need to know about that cesspit of a cub.

Here is a transcript of those tragic events from an eye witness.

Those of us at the ground knew the perpetrator and would have torn him limb from limb if we could have reached him.

Just read the link. If I said what I really feel, I’d probably be sitting on the sidelines of BigFooty for a while. Disgusting to think that animal was honoured by the Saints. Scum.

Greening may have been a lot of things but he never was, and was never going to be, a dominant big man. He played on a wing/flank.

Brodie will end up being our greatest ever ruckman.

Greening could have just as easily slotted into the CHF role if asked. Similar size to contemporaries of that era like Hart and Brereton.

That aside, I don't think Grundy is as good as either Thompson or Moore..... YET.

But that shouldn't really surprise given he's just this year starting to enter what should be his prime years and should continue to improve for at least the next few seasons. It's a scary prospect for opposition teams but I agree, he will likely end up being our greatest ever ruckman.

Yes I am of the same opinion, but having been there and seeing John's body just go limp before he fell like a dead man was pretty horrific.

There was a strong suspicion that O'Dea was acting under instruction as well - which would not surprise me at all.

10 games for almost killing a guy is weak as piss, the thug should have been run out of the game.

If it had been a Carlton or Melbourne player in John's place O'Dea would have been torn apart by the VFL.

Anyway back to the thread topic.

Brodie has already surpassed Moore and is closing in on Thommo, I really hope he is a one cub champion for us.

You can never ever have a Certain Best as they Played in Different Era's but Grundy as long stays Injury Free be in the Convasations of Collingwoods Greatest Ever Ruckman at end of his Career

Whilst I think/hope Brodie surpasses both of them, he is still miles off Moore.

poor derm has aged 15 years overnight.

A lot of romance for the past here. Moore was a great mark. I remember that. Obviously, he proved himself as a forward in his early days but it was easier to take a contested mark in those days, and he used to come from behind and just over people and use his height. He was also a super mover... and probably would have made the transition to the modern era pretty well. But he never did the on the ground stuff that grundy does.... as max gawn said last night, grundy has revolutionised the ruck role.

I just had a quick look at Moore's stats and he had a great two year period as a forward early on, then a couple of great years as a ruckman and then a brownlow year with melbourne. The rest was solid. I cant remember much of his melb years as they were never on "the Winners" because they were so crap. I think the umpires loved him...and I have to say that I can still remember not being too impressed when he left..

I think I'd still take brodes...

He just missed the 70's but it was still essentially the same era. Could just as easily have said Jezza or Hudson and if you went looking you'd find there were lots of sub 190cm KPP's in that 70's-80's era.

I do too. Black and White is in his DNA apparently. 🤞

Current team. Pendlebury is number 1.

All time - Daicos, Buckley, P Moore, Pendlebury, Chocco
I likes.

Mine:

Current team: Scott Pendlebury, Matthew Scharenberg (in case anyone missed that), Brodie Grundy, Jordan De Goey.
Special love for Daniel Wells. Tough love for Brayden Sier :D

All time: Len Thompson (my first favourite player), Peter Daicos, Scott Pendlebury.... some guy named Nathan Buckley.

Players that had a real soft spot, as kid Ron Wearmouth. That hair whizzing buy. Later on James Clement.

Don't remember Johnny ever reaching the 6'2- 6'3 range? He was a winger/midfielder. I agree he could have played CHF like maybe Daryl Baldock did but he wasn't ever as big or robust as Hart or Brereton.

I'm with you Mark. Brody already has Thommo and Moore covered not via superior skill or athleticism (He's more athletic than Thommo and less athletic than Peter Moore) BUT what he has over our other contenders is sheer animal GRUNT. Second efforts were not really something Moore or Thompson lived and died on. Grundy gives second, third and sometimes fourth efforts at contests. He simply REFUSES TO BE BEATEN. In a lot of ways Grundy is more like a supersized Gavin Brown.
I loved Thommo and his tap outs to The Richardson's, Price and Greening. I loved Peter Moore and his high marking and long goals....but Grundy is a beast. If he's not already there (which I'd argue he is), then another season or two will certainly establish his standing as our (and one of the AFL's) greatest ever ruckmen.

yeh i tend to agree. Actually, I was confronted by len thompson out the front the newsagency in burgundy street heidelberg one afternoon in my youth. He was very tall and I was very small at the time. It had an impact and he ended up being one of my favourite players at the time but he didnt have a strong presence on the field... at least that's how i remember it. When I was looking for a big guy to splash some carlton noses across their faces in the 70 grand final, he wasnt going to be the one to do it... not that i'm criticising him as he didnt have that nature. The irony is that both him and Moore would probably have transferred to modern times pretty well - a lot better than big nick who would never have bothered the prison board to get a day pass. It would be easy to pick kruezar over big nick, but not that easy to do a comparison with our three. I have to admit here that I think big Nick was a relation of mine. My mother used to refer to him. He played in maryborough which is where my people are from. I dont want to research it because it might be true and i'll have to castrate myself to stop the bloodlines.
