A more interesting question perhaps is which coach would've made the most difference over the last 20+ years? Is there anyone we could've brought in that would've had a profound positive effect compared to the coaches we've had?

For example, if Leigh Matthews had coached us instead of coaching Brisbane, would we have won more premierships in the early 2000s? Or if Bomber Thompson had coached us instead of Geelong would we have had more success?
That depends on whether we would've still brought in players like Cole, Zantuck or washed up guys like Allan and Camporeale.

Any y'all milenials ever think the last 17 years would have been any worse if you had have just let Sheeds finish coaching us on his terms?
Sheeds was done. The magic was gone and he possibly went on for a year or two too long. Controversial to say it but I also reckon he underachieved as a coach at Essendon.

I have to agree. Should have got another GF appearance out of the early 80’s side.
Only 1 GF win from the 93 side and then the 00 side as well.
May sound greedy but they should have won another between 93 and 96 and that 2000 side definitely should have played in the 99 GF and not fallen away so quickly even with the cap issues.

That 2000 side must be one of the strongest sides to have only won a single GF.

Sheeds genius was in his ability to regenerate and remain competitive. Not many coaches have regenerated like he did and he did it 3 times. Plus we were spoilt to play finals nearly every season up until 2004. He lost the regenerative mojo though when he decided to load up with other club’s rejects, and backing in jaded and injured veterans was an error. Injuries often worked against us creating true dynasties.

As far as the early 80s side goes, we had Carlton’s measure and could’ve beaten them in 81 and 82. I went to the round 22 game when Geelong took our double chance. It was my first ever game attended. The rain and Neale Daniher’s knee injury the week before conspired against us and ultimately our momentum was halted after winning 16 games in a row, including the late season win at Princes Park that Daniher got us home in.

Allan Jeans said Sheedy couldn't leave things alone and thought that was a weak point. Not long ago was watching a mid 80's match between us and the Hawks and we were comfortably in front. Kevin Walsh was destroying Brereton who couldn't get near it. Sheedy changed the team around and took Walsh off Brereton who got off the leash. Hawthorn got close but we won. It reminded me of what Jeans said though. Certainly there were the changes made in the 84GF but looking back I think that mid 80's and the 90's teams should have won a bit more.

David Parkin said he always thought he was a chance when they were behind against Essendon. But when he was in front he would get physically sick with worry about what Sheedy might do.

Sounds a bit like Bevo really. Changing stuff for the sake of changing it. Sometimes it works. A lot of times it doesn’t.

Modern football is much closer than it was in the past, so you can’t get away with this stuff as much.

Not a millennial but yes it could have been worse. Sheedy did not even know all the players on the list in the last few years and was too distracted by the red wines and his horses.
Why couldn't we have had the full on external review there and then, not 15 years later
