So we keep an under-performer because we don't want to lose the trade?

Win footy games. improve the list.

1 we weren't going to keep Setters at the money Essendon gave him.

2. We wanted to keep one of the two. We kept the contracted one.

3. They've both underperformed

Both our Rucks will be OOC by end 2023, should Cats lure TDK a real possibility , pretty attractive destination for youngster and obvious brother connection , we’ll be in deep poo.
When was the last time a team lost a ruck and found themselves in deep poo? Most replaceable position on the ground. TDK has huge upside but if for any reason he were to depart its certainly not going to hamper us for years to come like a Weitering or Walsh would.

Not really, as we lack depth in our rucks and if Pittonet went down again & with Mirkov not yet ready, losing TDK would then put us in the :poo:, deep or shallow take your pick.....

When Harry Madden Came over from Essendon I was seriously considering investing my savings to pay for a hit on him. He was Sh*thouse in his first to seasons with us. He then turned into a beauty. Big men Take time to develop. And Mirkov is more athletic and Coordinated than Madden.

Time will tell.
Madden was also a footballer all along where as Mirkov is coming from another sport.

Not sure about Harry being poor in his first two seasons with us. Averaged nearly 2 goals a game (18 in 10) in his first season and kicked 39 goals in his second season playing ruck/forward. Imagine a ruckman kicking 39 goals in a year these days?

The only thing that links Harry and Alex is their height. Harry grew up as a (slightly comical) footballer and had years of experience on Alex. I am not bullish on Mirkov but quietly confident that he will make it.

Can you let us know how we could of got Grundy or Dunkley in the trade period real interested in your thoughts of how it could have been achieved ?

It’s not really about acquiring through a trade it’s currently about how we fit them all in the salary cap. We’re in consolidation mode tying up our guns to long term contracts, and I think we will be in consolidation mode next year also.

I don’t expect any big name trades until 2024 trade period, it’s clear that’s the way we’re going as that’s what they have said they were going to do.

To get very good players in trades or free agency generally cost significant cap space.

Think you answered you own question. Two of those players were not highly regarded by the league. But what's wrong with Ed? He had an injury-ravaged year, many players do, but his last year was very good. I reckon he would have been top 10 in the b and f, just because someones over 30 we should not dismiss them. And with some better mids at the club now, perhaps that may even help his impact, or he will support the VFL team. It's win win for us with him, glad they kept him. Been a great club man for a long time and there hasn't been many times I've seen him sherk a contest, if ever.
War wounds aside, Ed was (and is) one of the hardest trainers at the Club and always at the head of the running groups....

That ability doesn't disappear and, as you say, he's only 33 next month.

How good is the bitching and moaning about not recruiting superstars every trade period...

IN: Jon Ceglar, Tyson Stengle
OUT: Nathan Kreuger, Darcy Fort, Jordan Clark

Face value, I'm not sure any of those look like an outright improvement at the time. Geelong marginally, and even then it's a bit of a hindsight call. Sydney's is an outright loss, and they still managed to win through to the GF.

Acres for Setterfield doesn't sound sexy, but it's the kind of move successful clubs make - move on some plateaued depth, bring in role players in areas of need.

Setterfield is replaceable.
The question is why the likes of Grundy or Dunkley weren't pursued. They add to our list.

It's important to be nice but nicer to be important.

We continue to be irrelevant. 9th again next year and the Tiger supporters can come at us.
Don't need Dunley, stacked for mids, chased harder by Lions.
Grundy is a cap killer, never pay that money for a ruck. Pies made that mistake once.

I think you speak too much sense for George.

Still spewing we missed on Tim O'Brien and Luke Dunstan.

Obviously we should have traded Dow & Setters for them, with the Dogs & Pies each covering about $500k per year. Maybe not delisted Newnes & Stocker so we could throw them in as steak knives to get it done. Simples...

Not sure about that.

The position is slightly overrated in todays game unless your ruckman has the ability to either collect 30 disposals (like Stynes and Dean Cox) or kick goals (like Simon Madden and Cory McKernan).

Collingwood looked better after they lost Grundy and almost won the flag with Cameron and Cox headlining their ruck division.

When Melbourne got beat by Brisbane Darcy Fort and McStay neutralised Gawn and Jackson.

Geelong won the flag with the largely inconspicuous Rhys Stanley leading the ruck.

Was just in town with my son and the Pioneers boys were out...

My son knows and played with some of them, so they all had a chat...
They were all well mannered, I didn't want to be that creepy bloke that asked them about Carlton... So left them to it...

They were all quite short Gallagher, Cameron, Reid isn't much taller than me so over 181cm and Gillbee is tall...

How does everyone think Harry would go if he played ruck full time? What about Tom Hawkins, Joe Danniher, Harry Himmelberg, Charlie Dixon, Max King or Ben King?

I look at these players and think all would be real solid rucks, what all of them lack in ruck craft, would make up by actually providing a serious marking target around the ground, actually being able to be used as a link up player and be a real forward threat.

I wouldn’t move any of those guys in to the ruck, but I’m more wondering why clubs don’t or haven’t tried recruiting KPFs and playing them as a ruck, instead of using guys who after the hit out, struggle to make an impact.

Next time you're a bit hesitant to ask for some info you can tell them skadoosh from Bigfooty wants to know. That way you can avoid the creepy bloke vibe and I'll take it on the chin for you.

Port -Traded out Ladhams and then Lycett was injured most of the year. Hayes was no good and they ended up with make shift rucks cost them in a number of games

Actually not sure about that. Lycett played their first 4 games which they lost. As the season went on they fashioned a Finlayson/Dixon combo that worked really well for them. Finlayson had some ridiculous data rating which put him at the second best ruck in the comp (clearly we would take that with a grain of salt,)

Port actually went 0/4 with lycett and 10/8 without.

You dont need a star in the ruck, at any given time there are only 3 or 4 rucks of note in the competition. If a ruck man can nullify the influence of the opposition ruck men at the bounce the drop of the ball will depend on your on ballers. Its the A graders that can move forward or back and have an influence with their marking that you need to worry about.

This is what we are hoping TDK can do in the near future. Taps to advantage are rare and overrated unless it is down a midfielders throat.

Was very keen on Wallis a few years back, but that ship has sailed.

Unpopular opinion incoming: I’d very seriously consider signing Josh Walker as a DFA.

Mature tall who can fill a role at either end. Strong pair of hands.

Have always liked him as a footballer.

Update.

Caleb Poulter. Bring him to me. Now.

Was a big fan of his in his draft year. Had a decent first year, clearly fell out of favour in his second.

Suspect if he gets another chance it may be at a club in SA but I'd certainly be picking up the phone.
