Taylor is a worry. Year and still dead last (bar ruckman) in the running. Any decent regular midfielder is a strong runner in the comp.

It is a worry - but didn’t seem to impact him winning the ball or his impact with the ball when he played

Looks like a bunch of the team gone the Buzz cut this offseason.

Saw Soligo, Rachele, Keays, Turray, Bond, Ryan all rocking a high and tight do.

I wonder who is next
Good signs.

One less thing for them to focus on.

If their ring tones & profile pics don't change in the next 12 months that will be another good sign.

No fresh tattoos and I think you can ink us in for finals.

Probably sensible when you're training in 30+ degrees.

We could all chip in and get bigman a bigger, shinier, newer set of binoculars. I'm sure there's 200 opposition fantasy AFL managers out there who would be keen to help out too.
At least get him a nice deckchair. One with extra padding and a cooler for his drinks.

Interested to hear how Schoenberg looks.
His career is clearly on the line this year. Does he still look like he's carrying puppy fat? He needs to be in the absolute peak condition of his life.
This is where the overarching direction of the club, the list and the 22 needs to be really clear in the coaches' minds.

There will be several players whose career is on the line:
Schoenberg
Smith
Laird (as a starting mid)
Pedlar
Milera
Murphy

This is where you can see highly motivated preseasons. In the past we've been guilty of allowing dazzling November-February periods to colour our thinking and on-field performance from the previous season gets forgotten.

Frampton/Himmelberg both played themselves into our forward line off the back of strong preseasons, following dismal seasons. It then takes us a third of the season to be reminded what we already know.

The coaches must not take a "spots are up for grabs" mindset into the preseason. The preseason only exists to aid/improve a player's in-season performance. It is not an alternative or a substitute for on-field output.

Smith for instance is a player we seemingly moved past in 2024. Let's imagine he puts in a strong preseason including practice matches.

That's fine. But it's not a ticket back into the 22. It should just be part of the picture.

Is he also performing well in the SANFL early in the season?
Is he fully fit and backing up well week-in, week-out or is he starting to show his age?
How is our back half performing at AFL level? Is there a spot available?
Is the team in a position to push for finals now, meaning that a 30+ year old can be brought in on performance?

If the answer to any of those questions is No, then he doesn't come in. Preseason performance be damned.

I hope this is where Murray Davis can provide input and direction.

His work is top of the pile and very well respected by more than he knows.
3 league chat groups of mine get his reports and we get 12 other team reports back.
His are by far the best imo.

  • Cook - now or never, mate
  • Berry - You a top flight inside bull, or do we give that to someone else?

Exciting times.

It's tricky for the coaches

Berry might indeed shine this preseason.

The coaches should have a clear picture of what a finals-winning team looks like. Is Berry part of a starting midfield that will be able to go head-to-head with the elite players in the competition?

If they think yes, then by all means pick Berry. If not, then they shouldn't be influenced by whatever occurs on the training track.

100% agree.
He needs to be at elite levels fitness, dominate all pre-season and then dominate 6+ weeks of SANFL before he gets a look in. He's on the outside and needs to bang the door down to get back inside. That's why I'm interested in what shape Schoenberg is in.
