Not really, he scored lots of tons though

So assuming it’s who I’m guessing it was, you got to bowl at - and send off, lol - Damien Martyn????

Holy f**k mate. That’s royalty. Utter royalty.

I need to know. Did he look as good with a bat then as he did later?

I’ve never watched a better looking batsman

Played with and against some very good players mate. Marto always looked good even from a young age. He scored a ton in the morning playing juniors and then would play A grade in the arvo. Exceptional talent.

In one season our A grade pennant team had terry Alderman, Kim Hughes, Tom hogan, Todd Bremen, Peter Gonella who were all playing interns or shield cricket.
We won that season and it’s a great memory.

By the way mate I played in the 80’s and 90’s when the shield and test players played regularly for their pennant club

I played junior district cricket against Damien Martyn, he had a reputation even at that age and he would score tons for fun.

I nearly ran him out going for another ton against us but just missed the stumps, that was about the only way to get him out.

This is awesome mate what incredible memories!!!! Something to treasure. I’ve played against brothers of test players and a couple of Comets and that’s been about it - anyone remotely good enough disappears too early around here and rarely make it far enough to have too big an impact aside from a certain current tv analyst but he’d left before I got the chance to play him

Did you play in the Lancashire game? I only heard about that recently.

WA Premier cricket (like all state pathway club cricket) was strong when the state contracted players would go back and play for their clubs regularly. Not so much now and to me it's a shame.

As a former umpire I had state players play in my games. It always lifted the standard and profile of the match.

Was so lucky to play in a great era, we played against test and shield players regularly. Then playing in England in either League cricket or county cricket the experience was something to remember. I don’t want to say cricket was better or worse back then as cricket formats have changed and I am sure the modern day game is great as well. But I wouldn’t swap my era for the world.
Well maybe I would as I could of played higher level maybe these days lol

It's fair to say in my opinion that Grade cricket and domestic cricket was stronger back then because the state/international players played more club cricket.

I do as well but I don’t want to knock the current players, they can only play in the era they play in.

Looking at the players you played with in A grade you must've been playing for Subi Floreat, I played juniors for them back then.

We used to train before the A grade players trained and Kim Hughes and Terry Alderman sometimes turned up early to coach us back when they were banned from playing for WA and Australia and could only play club cricket due to going on the SA rebel tour.

That was around 1986/87 which I'm guessing is when we won the A grade pennant, having guys like Kim Hughes and Terry Alderman available to play the whole season back then would have been pretty handy.

Such a great experience. Thats really missed now .
We would get maybe a game or two and the odd appearance at training from the state listed players.

I found it better in the UK tbh . Seemed to be a lot more crossover with counties to minor counties and the leagues .

I think grade/premier in most states has dipped .

Yes mate correct

I remember my 1st Grade debut (Subiaco Floreat vs Bayswater Morley) and when myself and my umpiring partner went out to inspect the pitch, Jason Behrendorff came up to me and congratulated me on my 1st Grade debut which i thought was very nice and i thabked hom for that. He only played for 1 day of the 2 day match because on day 2 he was playing First-Class cricket (Sheffield Shield) for WA.

He bowled from my end and really sent them down. Probably got up to 140 km p/h. He just lifted the standard and profile of the match for that first day.

Peter Sumich too?

Actually there you go. I can recall one state player coming through our grade comp while I was playing. Chris Tremain at about 17, maybe 18 years of age. And I faced maybe 3 balls before one of my stumps went cartwheeling
What happened to Tremain? He was top or near top wicket taker in the Shield last season and this season he's no where to be seen?
