Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli have decided to hand creative control of the Bond IP over to Amazon MGM. The Broccoli family have had creative control over the Bond IP since the very first Bond movie - Dr. No.

Why? If I had a guess, I'd say it may have something to do with the legal challenge being mounted by Dubai-based Austrian businessman, Josef Kliendienst: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/gen...r-ownership-of-iconic-name-erupts/ar-AA1z7V74

It may also be a case of them just getting older and no longer having the desire for Bond to be all consuming in their lives.

What does it mean? Firstly, it probably means a shitty Amazon Bond TV show, along similar lines to Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (i.e. taking Tolkien's IP and turning it into an abomination). It also means that all bets are off re: casting for the next Bond. Where Wilson/Broccoli have insisted that Bond always be male (even if he's not always British - think Lazenby), Amazon are now free to cast whoever they want in the role. Halle Berry, come on down!

On the one hand, this probably ensures the ongoing future of the Bond franchise. Wilson & Broccoli chose to kill Bond off in No Time To Die, and have seemingly made no headway on the next film in the franchise - no new Bond actor, no script, nothing. On the other hand, Bond fans can only be disappointed that the IP now rests in the hands of Amazon.

This is very sad to hear, I'm not excited about what may happen to my favourite film franchise with Broccoli and Wilson handing over control to a company whose track record for quaility film and TV programmes is sketchy at best.

Sad but also an inevitable step. Thanks for your service Barbara & Michael.

I wonder what that means for the Bond catalogue on Stan

reminds me of the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox

I doubt it would affect Stan. Amazon MGM were already co-owners of the Bond franchise (along with the Broccoli family). It's only the creative control over the IP which they have now gained.

I don't mind Rings of Power but understand why it's not universally loved. That being said, same mob put out Fallout which was universally loved by fans of the franchise.

Amazon haven't gone full blown Disney with their existing IP either, so it's been odd reading that criticism online.

Additionally, EON has already got a history of legal issues over IP rights, better it's sorted now than when they're near the end.

EON also oversaw the last series of films that had an overarching storyline that weren't universally loved, and concluded it with a really poor final outing.

I love the Bond franchise, one of my top 5 franchises, but I think people look through the history of it with rose coloured glasses.

Not saying it's a guaranteed success or anything, but some of the doomish predictions are odd IMO.

Ry009 you may have a point about Amazon not having a history of destroying IP with poorly produced and over-diluted crap, at least not to the extent that Disney have done with Star Wars and the MCU.

Nevertheless, Rings of Power is a clear warning that they are indeed capable of similar atrocities.

I’ve watched a few off this list

Bosch
Fallout
Underground Railway

A few others but it’s an inconsistent quality

Maybe they'll go down the path of 007 being the main movie but then spin offs of 001/002 etc as TV series. Black/women etc maybe even a 'buddy cop' teaming up 2 00 agents.
Maybe they could set one in the 60s?

There was talk about giving Halle Berry a spin-off series for her character Jinx, who appeared in the awful 20th Bond film (Die Another Day). Presumably it was the Broccoli family who killed off the idea. The window for this one has probably already closed.

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave one to the female agent who kicked butt so spectactularly in No Time to Die (I can't even remember her name - only that she kicked butt).

I didn't realise No Time to Die was released 2021.

With him dying in the last one, it almost would've (could've) made sense to end it there if they were done with it.

I'm a bit like you, fully expecting Amazon to butcher this.

Nah it will be fine. They only spent $2b on LOTR rights. They know how to make value/quality tv !

I think this is good news for James Bond fans. No Time To Die was pretty shit. Daniel Craig has been mailing it in as Bond, Remi Malek was a really bad villian so its comes at a good time for a franchise refresh.

They should go back to stand alone movies. Didn't really like trying to shoe in vesper Lynn, madeleine swan or Mr White storylines in subsequent films.

Apart from the recuring MI6 characters, they should aim for fresh new cast and a different plot in each movie like the old days.

Regarding the new bond, I don't think Amazon should take a risk on a lessor known actor. The likes of Henry Cavill or Tom Hardy are right there.
