Australia v India - pre series discussion

insanity to use a guy from 30 years ago as a good reason he'll make it, 43 bats is a lot of cricket and at 26 .
Ah, I'm not arguing that he'll make it. I'm saying it's a bit silly to say that he won't.

"But if there’s one thing we know about the Australia and India rivalry, it’s that there are often battles within the battle. Head-to-head rivalries, some which have extended beyond a decade, all that will have an impact on how the series is won and lost."

oh, like EVERY bloody series?!?!

i think this series has the potential of being disastrous for us.

youngest player in the side is mcsweeny. i hope he has a good run at it, but he's also 25 years old. our next youngest is 29 (inglis, who may not even get a game realistically). where does this put the future of our test team? who's meant to replace starc, cummins, hazlewood & lyon (amongst others) who're all 33 & above. i don't really follow domestic cricket anymore due to time constraints, but is there anyone in the shield who'll be pushing to replace any of these players?

McSweeney does have the best technique out of the options available and the most patience so I think the selectors got it right for once.. hopefully he starts well because if he starts to doubt himself he may nic off the whole series early.

Yeah I mean we need two openers and I think we've got the best two available, all you can do is pick em and hope they do well.

probably time to skip half a generation - forget about looking at bancroft, harris and even renshaw.
it's why warner hung around without being dropped as his worst was bancroft & co's best in the international arena.

i think the only issue we have is finding anyone genuine batsmen that can grind out an innings or bat for a day.

if we can invest some time into quality bats, we'll be fine if mcsweeney is a success and green with marnus and head still about for 5 years.

Bowlers we have fairly decent cover with the likes of Bartlett, Green, Morris, O’Neil, McAndrew, Paris, Murphy, Rocchiccioli. Bats we are less blessed.

Buckingham imo probably the best of the lot surely you can’t rely on Paris, Morris and Bartlett they can’t stay on the park

Jordan Buckingham doesn't have a last name according to Cricinfo

He also currently has more wickets than runs in both FC and List A.

replacing a once-in-a-generation bowling unit ain't easy...

oztraya's cricketing ethos has ALWAYS been 'win now'

when it counts - test series, world cups - more often than not they've been proven to get it right

look at the quicks in the u/19 world cup win earlier this year - beardman, vidler (plus whitney who took 8 wickets in the last shield outing and has just turned 22) - for who will hopefully be emerging in the next five years

it certainly isn’t, but surely there’d be someone in line that’s actually genuinely pushing selection, no?

If only the Vic.selectors would give Harry Dixon a extended go in the shield and red ball cricket and keep him away from white ball cricket especially T20.To much T20 type cricket in the 1 day stuff at the moment, remember Dean Jones in the old days just pushing it around along the ground for 2,s and 3,s and the occasional 4,s in a run a ball stuff.

In the future, and it will sort itself out.

Really, it's probably something similar to the late 00's. As people retire, there will be a somewhat rough period for 4-5 years before the next generation cements itself - and as people get opportunities when they arise, some of them will run with it.

They seem to run them (the quicks anyway) through A games and white ball stuff. I think with young fast bowlers that’s fine
i do suppose you’re correct, ultimately in comparison to batting you’d not really end up butchering your bowling playing shorter forms of cricket
