Australia v India - post 1st Test discussion, we're all doomed.

neither should have needed to bowl much if our bowlers put the work in and were Shield and match hardened by the start of the first test. Instead we have guys playing 1 match or 0 in Pats case and wonder why they aren't ready? The batsmen just as bad, what was Smith doing resting when the cooked bloke was leaving balls on middle peg in the Shield the one time he actually played
We had 4 fit bowlers, blame the selectors for not having a legit all rounder if you like but expecting 4 bowlers to bowl all the overs is stupid.

If it is all about time in the middle why does Marnus look literally lost? How many shield games did Head play who top scored for us?

At least Marnus stuck it out in the first innings yes it was as ugly as can be but the others weren't even doing that. Head played more than Cummins did, he played 1 from memory, it's 1 or 2. On what planet is not playing a Shield game good preparation?

Odd criticism, you think Heads part time off shit on that pitch would have been any better?

Probably not. Marnus’ part time leg shit would have been, though.

I do and don’t blame Cummins for that debacle.

That was the sort of thing that reeked of Marnus’ incessant need to be at the centre of everything whether it is the appealing and review process, his role as the team’s resident ‘pest/character,’ even the exaggerated way he throws himself around in the field.

Everything he does is on steroids to the point where it almost feels contrived. And I say that as someone who wants to like him because there’s not a hint of malice in the guy, he’s never put a foot wrong off the field etc.

But it seems plainly obvious that eventually it got to the stage of ‘hey skip, you know I’ve been bowling seamers non stop in the nets and even in shield games, give me a go, come on skip, let me have a go, come on, I’ll give the other guys a break and try and get a wicket.’ Cummins has probably thought ‘why not, we’ve tried all the main guys, let him put his money where his mouth is and see if he can do a job for us.’

I’m not saying it’s actually good captaincy, far from it. But none of that farce actually happens without Labuschagne’s desperate need for attention when he’d be far better served working on what is actually fairly handy legspin for a guy who’s essentially a very occasional part timer.

We had 4 bowlers, they were not match hardened and test match fit. That's my whole point. All should have played a MINIMUM of 2 Shield games, if Carey can so can the whole team. 2 should be a minimum, and it should be 3 ideally. Is it any surprise Cummins was terrible the first innings? He hadn't bowled! Was a stack better the second innings, now imagine if he actually played a Shield game got the terrible innings out of the way for NSW.

Cummins in a good leader in the sense that the others follow him.

He has always been inept tactically though.

And the Gen Z comment above is correct. Some serious work from home vibes at the moment.

I would not care about the Coldplay concert if they were also playing cricket. But if you need to rest, not really sure a concert is appropriate.

Not a good look especially if you get flogged.
Going to a concert for a couple hours one night no where near the first test is completely appropriate and if you want to do the whole 'gen z' thing

Whining about a concert being a bad look is the biggest boomer yells at cloud take i have seen. It had 0 impact on the preparation for the test and 0 impact on the game.

I literally rewatched Craddock’s Cricket Legend’s interview with Sobers last night where they mentioned his century against Bob Willis where he didn’t get a wink of sleep - after a night on the drink.

And people are questioning whether a few hours in the bleachers at a concert a week before a test is the reason for 11 blokes playing a sub-par test

From an uneducated outsider to the Oz team, has Renshaw been given a proper go? When I've seen him at Shield he looks to have a good technique.

Been found out. Barely made a run in 2 years. All the Average Triplets in Renshaw, Bancroft and Harris should never be near a test side again

I've been reading Three Summers of Sobers by Michael Sexton and he wrote about a game against the touring South Africans where he got 155 wearing his West Indies cap and when Chappelli asked him about it he said the South Africans had never seen a West Indian cap so he wanted to make sure they got a good look at it.

How about re-read my post? Going to the concert and missing games is the issue.

Missing games absolutely contributed to the poor first test performance.

And the concert has no relation to missing games. If you have an issue with missing games fine, but the concert is in no way related to that. People need to let it go.

He has such an understated passive arrogance, a bit like Warnie’s that is very very hard not to be drawn to.

His little story about how he rated Lillee very highly but Lillee bounced him (I think in the world XI test) and he very quietly said ‘Dennis you know I can bowl a good bouncer too’ and sure enough absolutely made sure he got to the bowling crease when Lillee batted and ripped one past his chin made me laugh.

Also his anecdote about Chandrasekhar bowling to Wes Hall and he was starting to tip Hall off when Chandra was about to bowl his googly by sticking his bat out at the non strikers end is pretty funny. Hall was starting to get a bit gloaty towards the Indians so Sobers decided he would teach him a lesson and not do it. Sure enough Hall gets bowled through the gate. ‘Why didn’t you tell me it was the googly?’
‘Well you sounded so confident that you were on top of him I didn’t think you needed my help.’

I’m catching up on the Crickrt front bar from the other night and Gavaskar is one of the guests.

I must say for such a pest when it comes to his one eyed commentary, he’s a very funny and self effacing bloke.

‘Why didn’t you wear a helmet in such an era of fast bowling with no limit on bouncers.’
‘Nothing to protect.’

His story about driving with Joel Garner is pretty funny too - Gavaskar sitting pretty much hunched over the dashboard and Garner basically driving from the back seat in order to reach the pedals

this..people who think you can play only 4 bowlers in modern test cricket don't really watch test cricket

What about when the actual all rounder everyone is up in arms about takes more wickets for the match than either Sobers or Kallis averaged per test and Australia’s total overs spent bowling for the entire match was almost exactly 2 days of test match cricket

People slating Cummins and the whole team are pretty funny.

Since McDonald and Cummins have been working together, the team has gone pretty damn well.

Yes, they played poorly in this test.

Yes, that’s unfortunate.

Yes, a few key bats are out of form.

Yes, Green was a bigger loss than most thought (not to downplay his importance by any means)

It happens to every team, just ask India. As much as I love our kiwi brethren - I genuinely do - it was an absolute debacle for India. If the same thing happened here I can almost guarantee that the coach and possibly captain wouldn’t survive.

We will have other bad losses. We will also have some lucky wins. Other teams will play poorly against us.

A professional cricketer of Pat Cummins’s standards knows what is required for his preparation better than any of us do, only an absolute clown would think otherwise.

If we lose like this again in the next match, heads will roll. Until then, stress less, it’s summer and the cricket is on.
