Australia v India - post 1st Test discussion, we're all doomed.

Aussie cricket is not doomed providing we nurture our most promising junior talent as seen in the Junior Ashes last year. The Poms fielded two good sides, both here and at home, but we were better across all facets. Other than Sam Konstas, names for CA to put in their little black book are ; Mahli Beardman, Charlie Anderson, Callum Vidler, Joel Davies, Harry Dixon, Liam Blackford, Hugh Weibgen, Ethan Jamieson, Raf MacMillan , Lachlan Aitken, Ryan Hicks. Konstas, Anderson and Beardman are already on CA radar after their selection in the PMX1 side.
Even Ollie Davies, averaging 45+ for his first 1000 runs in first class cricket. Could spice things up if he makes a big score soon

Heck no. Just what we don't need more rocks or diamonds bats.

If we take the same 11 from the 1st test into the 2nd test especially Labs we might be doomed.

Guess there are two ways of thinking. Do we say you know what they were our best 6 bats, we should not toss the toys out after 1 test.

Alternatively is Labs so bad he needs a mental break?

Honestly don't know but I get them not changing anything, but they better perform

I was also looking at Hardie's bowling average too, he's got legit all rounder numbers, but yeah you make a fair point.

To be honest they might both get a go, if Labuschagne and McSweeney end up getting dropped Marsh might go up to open or number 3 with Head (maybe) and put them both in. I don't like the idea of moving Head from 5 but we don't have many choices currently.
If you're after a more pure all-rounder then I'd agree with Hardie but for me we need the most help batting. I'd take his extra batting with the more part time quality bowling.

Labs hasn't really belted the best sides, hasn't been horrible but to only have 3 100's against the Big 3 (India, England and South Africa) in 28 Tests probably shows his not elite, his earnt most his credits against the weaker sides.

Marsh the big one, we really miss Green this summer it's abundantly clear
Are you really going to put the no.6 batter & all-rounder as that type? That's basically their role in the team batting & bowling wise. I think that's unfair, our no.6 all rounder isn't the issue with our top 5 playing like rocks for 12 months now.

I would've agreed with Head being a rocks or diamonds type, especially as his form in the part yr or so has been close to as bad as Smith & Lasange.

Mitchell Marsh's form was always going to come back to the pack, tbh if he isn't scoring runs he doesn't add much value.
Mitchell Marsh when not playing England is and always has been well and truly middle/lower end of the pack.

Mitch Marsh’s test batting average: 30.33
Bowling average: 39.19

vs England: batting average 47.07
Bowling average 29.66

We should just put him in a fridge and bring him back out every time we play England.

Overall first class records are not good enough.
They were both averaging 40+ a couple of years ago before a slump dragged down their figures to the present. If they keep on producing these kinda numbers that former average will be reached and even passed fairly quickly. In our present state CA will want state top order bats scoring big runs. These two are.

Head i'm okay with (you accept the good and the bad there) it's everyone else around him. If Green is there, why are we playing another bits and piece player in Marsh? Makes very little sense. The top 4 is the issue and it's not just Lab. Smith is utterly cooked, if he doesn't retire after this summer just drop him.

Has a bit of an English village technique. Doubt he'd score big runs against world class bowlers.

Also as brainless as can be

Take today's innings...decides to want to whack Kuhermann into the next postcode every ball...out

No way. Smith still averages in the mid @50s career and before he went to opener, the mid @40s that year. Not cooked yet, a bit of juice still in the tank. Besides as a legend CA will want him to go on his terms. His decline has been no where near that of Warner who did deserve dropping after Ashes 2019. Never reached the same stratosphere as Smith, yet he was given the privilege of making his own call.

He's cooked and if you can guarantee he'll last a year I'm all ears, carrying blokes on what they did 5+ years ago is making the issue worse. It's bad enough we have Lab in there, we have Khawaja and Smith looking done. Just bite the bullet we have a series against SL, then a home Ashes to ease these guys in

Tbf, Green was top 4 before his injury. He'd made the no.4 spot his own. He's not in the same category as Marsh. Whoever would be batting a 6 is at best a bits and pieces player, it's the nature of the spot.

The selectors had a fortunate ex machina in a sense given Green got injured so it was now easy to move Smith back to 4. If not for the injury it would've been hard.

Agree Smith is cooked. I was telling people last summer that he should have retired and that home summer be a farewell tour - instead of Warner (or at least with, as distasteful as that would be).

Smudge is as cooked as it gets. It's well and good to say his average is mid 50s, but 12 months ago it was in the 60s. It's been a dramatic drop.

In the past 12 months (16 innings - since the away Ashes) he averages 29 and has passed 50 twice with 0 centuries. A 90 not out is doing some heavy lifting for the average. He's been as bad as Labuschagne.

Fwiw, Khawaja has seemingly escaped criticism but he has also been as bad as Smith and Labuschagne. Averaging 30 with 1 50 since the Ashes. 3 not outs lifting the average there. The whole top 4 is cooked. No one singularly is the issue, they're all the issue.

The problem with Smith and Khawaja in particular is being on the wrong side of 35 means those numbers getting better is an extremely weak proposition.

Khawaja probably escaped it because we know his gone after this summer.
