Anyone know why abbey Holmes was picked up so late? Has a pretty healthy resume

Good player in a weaker league. Has done ok in state battles between weaker states, but not established she can step up.

Was going to have a go at the VWFL but was injured, not sure she played at all

That explains it. I recon she will go ok, will turn out to be a bargain pickup

Another good story about a young girl who originally could not play footy when she wanted to, because of the era she found herself in.
As we have said before there are hundreds of would be footy players now with her background of playing other sports such as Indoor Cricket, because that is how it was.
At aged 34 it is a gutsy effort to pull on the boots.

It is going to be fascinating so see how the Womens Footy participation numbers rise and if and when they peak. There have been articles written recently querying will the new league be sustainable. It will be IF managed right.

If growth plateued now, the number of junior's still to filter through the system means senior footy would keep increasing in depth and quality for years.

Remember, Callinan may be a good natural footballer, but her modern day equivalent will arrive in senior footy with a decade + of experience, and probably several years in an academy. No comparison really.

We're seeing it today with the players that are coming through the Youth Girls system.

Just to chuck and example out there, Melbourne didn't draft Berry with their second pick (and the 5th Victorian) as a teenager because she's the fifth best player this year. They expect the fact that she's grown up with the game since Auskick and received better coaching and development at that YG level even compared with 5 years ago, that, even with perhaps less natural athletic attributes she'll be one of the best players in the competition over the next ten years.

It was noticeable that Melbourne seemed to be prioritising footy smarts, specifically young footy smarts. They got 3? youth girls.
