THE Carlton Football Club can confirm that after 26 years within the AFL industry, Director of High Performance Andrew Russell will step away from football at the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season.

Following six seasons at the Blues, in which time he led high performance, Russell will conclude his time at the Club, with his current contract set to expire at season’s end.

Agreed. Cerra was clearly our best mid for the first half of 2023. He alone will make a huge difference if he can stay fit.

TDK, Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Jagga, Lord, Hewett - matches up with the best in the league for depth and talent. I'd argue it is the best midfield in the league. Just got to keep them on the park.

The dream!

Agree. to a certain extent...

I think the Lions bat deeper with the added Ashcroft and more importantly they have the pinch hitters that go through the midfields that can change a game. We lack that...

Our biggest point of difference is TDK, he's the one we need to protect, full stop...

Be interesting to see if Levi Ashcroft is selected in Brissy's best 22, or will he be expected to develop in the 2's despite being a contender for pick 1 in this years draft.

This is true, many clubs leave key messaging printed around the changeroom/ medical rooms to keep players on script from week to week.

Players thought he was nuts. Very few were sold on him from the very start.

Interestingly, club went out of their way to tell the players to talk him up more than usual in the media if questions were asked.

There is no 'fall guy' or 'scapegoat'. He might've been great at Hawthorn but was poor for our playing group, which is why he was sacked. It's literally the same scenario as when we got Buttifant.

Not saying you are wrong but I have never heard anything close to this

Well if Neale drops off a bit (32 next year) I think they're well down the pecking order I think.

Zorko even moreso IMO - 36 by the time the season starts and he was critical for them this year.
The team was 18-1-8 across the season, and in games where Zorko had 25+ touches they were 14-1-3

It's why AFL media is so ****ing boring.

Nothing interesting ever gets said, ever. But more media keeps appearing. Incredible business really.
Half of the journos work for the AFL directly and the others are acredited, cowed and know there's someone else who wants the job so rarely take risks.
when you add that to a 24 hour news cycle to fill you get more and more lukewarm 'approved opinion'.

If it’s true about Russell and how poor he was for us then we are about to see a huge rise in performance of our club. If it looks similar then we know it had nothing to do with him. I’m a firm
Believer Russell was not the right guy after about 4/5 years with us. Leadership was his strength and mental conditioning but the fitness side of stuff was poor. He changed too many things too often and although he could fix long term injury issues he had no idea about building strength and unity prevention

Usual nonsense can't have reasoned debate about performance without someone inputting it's just a witch hunt / scape goating etc. Some might be but those inputs are always aimed at stopping discussion and at everyone involved. yawn
Usual nonsense.. ok, I'll bite.
Is it nonsense to point out the each-way bet people have made about the club's HP team? No.
I engage people on their points just as I have with you so I'm hardly aiming to stop the discussion.
Bitchy remarks though, that'll show everyone..

The stats don't lie. Our HP team have underperformed for a very long time.

Change was desperately needed.

Walsh and Cerra are high points of interest in 2025 for the current high perf teams vs to old regime influenced by Russell. I'm an interested onlooker.

The first thing I've noticed is Walshy on a modified programme. I mean derr!!!!

It was so obvious you didn’t even need a degree in fitness, way better odds than an each way bet.

He just wasn’t good at his job, wanted him gone during the 2022 season, just wish the club was as brutal on other positions in the club as they are with the coaching position.

High performance starts at board level, one year you go it was one out of the box, 2 years you really start to ask some serious questions, 3 years in a row and it should have been curtains. How he lasted 6 years is beyond ridiculous

Richmond bulleted their head phys edder after one bad year, just saying

well, we’ll see the impact - good or bad - as the season goes on. One thing for certain was that our team was not known for its speed or hard running between the arcs. We very much got exploited by the teams that ran and hunted in packs. The changes that Inness brings will also need to be complemented by alterations to our playing style - we have resisted the modern game for far too long.

If Russell was still with us then the cacophany of cries for his head would have been catastrophic on here over the soft tissue injury to Walsh.

The club appraised Russell and let him go. You need to move on. Russell being average doesnt stop the new guy being average also but Russell got at least 4 seasons under his belt before the cacophany really started.

How to look at it in summary. Cripps gives us advantages in the middle so we love him. Russell on balance didnt give us any advantages in injury management and soft tissue injuries. He just had to go. Russell for Carlton is like an Aaron Joseph...struggling.

Harsh on Aaron Joseph. He used to get his job done consistently at a high level for us.

That’s because he was woefully inept at doing his job for the 6+ years he was with us.
If Innes is just as inept then let’s hope we make a decision a hell of a lot quicker than we made with Russell

Idk how we can hire gun after gun and spit them out a few years later saying they're crap.
Seems like the only common factor is CFC.
Either we're appalling at choosing quality staff, or we ruin them and then cast them out.
