I know its already been said a few times but,

Jack Watts: Overall = 106th, Defenders = 13th
Luke McPharlin: Overall = 280th, Defenders = 74th

Over a period where one was scrutinized, ridiculed and eventually dropped and the other was the first choice stand in captain and All Australian.

You're kidding me. Channel Seven and that ***ker Bazil are running a story on the ranking system. Can they do nothing themselves?

Guess it wouldn't be wise to go on their board now ! ;)
On the contrary, when their enforcers are out of action is precisely the right time to pay an extended visit. Although TBH their board is a lot less interesting now that they're winning.

F***ing amen!!

Arise indeed!

Egh! I'm still not convinced about those front running hipster vegan ****.

They have beaten Western Bulldogs and Melbourne. Teams that since the start of last year have won 6 and 5 games in the last 28 respectively.

So they have beaten 2nd from bottom, 3rd from bottom and this weekend they play 5th from the bottom. I love that we get to play them twice :)

I seriously don't get why people even care about stuff like this.

I very much agree ... but I think what annoys people is just the sheer lunacy of it. The AFL website has been banging on about these "revolutionary" rankings ... yet 2 seconds after looking at the list, it is clear to even the biggest imbecile how useless these rankings are. It beggars belief (actually, this is the AFL, so maybe not) someone would put time into this and publish the results and not know how foolish it looks.

Yeah but false hope generates too many positive vibes over there for me to get my daily dose of schadenfreude.

This is a starting point. They need to start somewhere. They choose their approach, run the numbers and see what spills out. Obviously there are serious faults in the ranking of stoppers and key defenders.

They've admitted as much.

The one-on-one contests that'll be coming in at the end of the season should help, and I reckon they'll need to increase the weighting on some of the defensive acts to help push key defenders up the rankings.

I think the equity-thing is pretty revolutionary. Certainly requires a hell of a lot more number crunching and data gathering than the stat-counting approach (DT, and to a degree SC). But they need to improve the system to better reflect how important stoppers and key defenders are. I'm sure they'll be tweaking the thing, as the current hole in the system re: these fellas is blatant.

Even if its based on tangible stats, i cant work out the Hurn ranking.. especially over the last 24 months since teams have worked out (well any half decent team anyway) to stick someone in the same postcode as him and watch him become a ghost both defensively and offensively.

It's based on the last 40 games. I'd say his ranking will keep drifting downwards as teams bother to neutralise him. Presumably he was having a lot of impact in the first 30 or so.

If he keeps putting in even average performances (let alone poor ones) his ranking will drop fairly quickly as they apparently weight more recent games more highly than old ones now.

Never played a game.

But stats will hold up against all.

You are the epitome of the new, informed, football supporter.

Not trying to be personal...but I am just mourning the real football supporter.

Sorry.

This system is very flawed and wrong on many levels. It doesn't prove anything and it certainly isn't needed. There is less merit in this ranking system than the "AA Selection committee".

I wish they would just stop with the constant barrage of sensationalism about which player is the best in the comp. Players do things that can't be measured, ie Gut running, blocking off the ball, marshalling the troops and mentoring younger players when they need it.

Sorry.

Felt personal. But then I read it again and used my brain.

Composed a typically balanced response... then deleted it and actually decided to be direct.

Never played a game.

First bit true. And you only know this because I volunteered the information.

But stats will hold up against all.

Second bit bullsh*t. Don't put words into my mouth. Construct a straw man by all means, but I'm not that man. Anyone that has half a brain realises that models and statistics only provide a partial view of anything.

However, only an idiot believes that all models and statistics are meaningless.

(Straw man argument. You get one. So do I)

Like anyone, I think based on what I understand. I didn't play footy. So I go based on what I see, what I read/hear, and what I understand from applying that to new games that I see. And then it goes around again. That's how understanding develops for those of us that didn't play.

I played basketball for a decade, and union for a little over 3 years at a recreational/amateur level. Does that mean I'm better qualified to discuss NBL, NBA, Super 15 or test rugby than everyone else that hasn't... regardless of how much they read, who they talk to and how much they think about it?

Well, sorry PB. I'm sure there are many that mourn the loss of the real football supporter. I'm sure there are quite a few real football supporters over at Dockerland as well.

However, if you'd only like to interact with people that:
1. Played footy
2. Watched Stephen Michael run around in the WAFL, and
3. Enjoy taking the p*ss out of people that haven't

Maybe you should construct your own website... because BF clearly isn't the one for you.

I, personally, like you. You occasionally p*ss me off, but I usually learn something by keeping my mind open to what you say.

Wrapping me (and everyone else that hasn't satisfied points 1 and 2, and actually uses stats) into the same bundle is mentally lazy. Reality is, no one is right all the time. Occasionally the new idiots have something worth saying (even if this idiot isn't).

I've been a Freo member for ten years now. Ever since I came to this country. Watched almost every Freo game. Missed the Geelong final in 2010. Was in Canada. Wouldn't say I was an expert but I think I've learned a bit in 11 years.

What I've learned about stats and footy is this...

1. You can have more disposals and goals in a winning team in a derby..and lose the Rosco to an Eagle.
2. Lies Lies and damn statistics ..still holds true.
3. When I'm watching a game, or more importantly, at a game, I generally couldn't tell you who had the most possies, clangers(although my guess was usually Schammer) or tackles. The only stats I knew were goals/behinds and the W.

Think the determination by the AFL to put a finite Ranking (read Dream Team) figure on a player is very American and is only second on their priority list next to trying to get Essendon out of the hole they are in with pre supplied excuses for ASADA.

Fair whack and I richly deserved it. You're a quality poster and deserve better than that.

Sincere apologies, I was out of line last night.

**may have been extremely socially excited and in the dog house.
