MEN’S PREMIER DIVISION:

SWS Blues

UTS Bats 5.9.39

Southwest Sydney Blues started this season in emphatic fashion defeating the UTS Bats by seven straight goals at Monarch Oval.

The two sides fought grimly over the first three quarters, with the Blues leading by one point at half time and then by five points three-quarter time, which set up a fascinating final quarter. The Southwest Sydney faithful will be very happy with their six-goal to zero final quarter, finishing off the Bats and gaining valuable percentage at the start of the season

Blues forward Josh Croft produced an excellent performance, kicking 4 vital goals in a perfect start for the Blues. Blake Jarvis and James Kennedy added 2 goals each for the Southwest Sydney outfit. Lewis McCormack kicked 2 goals for the Bats, who’ll be slightly disappointed in falling away in the last quarter after an excellent three-quarter effort

Best players for the Blues with Jacob Croft, representative ruckman Finbar Delbridge, Callum Burns, Max Lower, Lachlan Maples and Eddie Keogh. The Bats were best served by Hamish Latchford, George Boyd, Henry Gosse, Oscar Doland, Louis Pribula and Ed Palmer.


North Shore 7.12.54
Pennant Hills 6.8.44

In an engrossing broadcast fixture on Saturday at a damn Gore Hill Oval, Pennant Hills gave North Shore a real run for their money before the Bombers ran out victors. The Demons, with seven debutantes, tackled and hustled North Shore for four full quarters, and the Bombers will be relieved to have secured four points on the day they unfurled their premiership flags in front of the faithful at Gore Hill.

Small forward Matt Buskariol kicked 2 majors, with limited opportunities, for North Shore. The Prince Theo Moraitis kicked 2 majors for Pennant Hills as the Demons fell just short of producing an enormous upset. Burly Demons half-forward Nick Hey submitted an early candidate for goal of the season with a ridiculous mid-air effort from the boundary line, setting Social Media alight.

Best players for North Shore were key back Mitchell Rogers, James Tidemann, small forward Finn Chalmers, Will Giacometti, ruckman Thomas Drum and Max Toohey. The Demons’ best players were skipper Mitchell Blow, Nick Hey, Nick Eynaud, Josh Everett, Lachlan Willey and key back Luka Jordaan.


UNSW-ES 14.11.95
St George 6.4.40

In the in the Sunday fixture at Henson Park, the University of NSW-Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs showed they are on track for a finals berth with a resounding 55-point win over a resolute St George Dragons.

The match was played in a strong southerly breeze, and Bulldogs captain Will Spencer had no hesitation in running with the breeze in the first quarter. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 27-point lead at quarter-time and went on with the job in an excellent start to their season. The Dragons kicked four goals in the final quarter, kicking down breeze, and as always, did not stop fighting until the final siren sounded.

New recruits Hugo Birks kicked 4 goals for the Bulldogs and returning veteran Kieran Emery kicked 3. The Bulldogs faithful will want to see these two playing in tandem throughout the season, as they caused enormous headaches for the Dragons key backs. Indeed, if Birks had had his kicking boots on, he may have kicked 7 or 8 goals. Mac Winchester kicked 2 goals for the Dragons in the final quarter.

Best players for the Bulldogs were Thomas Baxter, Oscar Peter, Birks, Toby Alker, sublime halfback Cooper Kilpatrick and Louis Kitto. The Dragons were best served by Alex Box, Jack Druery, Eddie Marning, ruckman Nelson Carey, Finn Richie and small forward Cave McKnight.


The remaining 2 fixtures, between Manly Warringah and East Coast, and Inner West versus Sydney University were cancelled due to inclement weather and will be replayed later in the season

Manly Wolves

In the match of the round at Weldon Oval, Manly Warringah produced a magnificent performance over North Shore, handing North Shore their first loss in 18 months.

After a quiet first quarter, Manly kicked three goals to two in the second quarter to lead by 16 points at half-time. The third quarter was pivotal, Manly keeping North Shore scoreless while piling on six goals. They went on with the job in the last quarter, kicking five goals to three in an absolutely superb display of running football on a glorious day at Curl Curl.

Key forwards Zach Youlten and Trent Dennis-Lane kicked three goals each for the Wolves. Lachlan Behagg and Kyle Martin also chipped in with two majors each. Ruck Angus Loebel and half forward Matt Buskariol kicked two goals each for the well-beaten North Shore.

Best players for Manly were Tom McCaffrey, Travis Schiller, ruck Antony Forato, Martin, Ky McGrath and Sam McMeeken. Best players for North Shore where Ned Campbell, Ethan Grace, Mitchell Rogers, Sean Netting, Patrick Bolger and Lachlan Howarth.


UNSW-ES 18.11.119
SW Sydney Blues 6.9.45

At Henson Park, Hugo Birks showed why he is such a pivotal recruit for the UNSW-ES Bulldogs, kicking nine goals for the Bulldogs in their 74-point demolition of South West Sydney Blues.

The Bulldogs produced a champagne first quarter, piling on 10 goals as part of an extraordinary 13 goal first quarter. From there, the Bulldogs continued to pile on the misery to South West Sydney in their second excellent display in six days.

Apart from Birks’ wonderful performance, veteran forward Kieran Emery kicked three goals for the Bulldogs. Nick Dunshea was the only multiple goal kicker it for the Blues, managing 2 majors.

Best Players for the Bulldogs were the outstanding Birks, key midfielder Sam Thorne, Toby Alker, Jack Willis, Will Shaw and Sam Gaden. Southwest Sydney was best served by Luke Parkinson, Dunshea, Matt Storey, representative ruckman Finbar Delbridge, Ethan Roberts and Eddie Keogh.


St George 12.11.83
Inner West 7.12.54

In a terrific performance in front of their home faithful at Olds Park, St George produced an excellent 29-point victory over the Inner West Magpies, with Inner West made to pay for inaccurate goalkicking.

Inner West actually led by three points at the first break but then St George rattled on five goals to one in the second quarter. Inner West scrambled to only 14 points behind at the last change which set up an excellent last quarter. The Dragons kicked four goals to two to finish off an outstanding performance.

Mobile forward Finn Ritchie had a day out for the Dragons, kicking five goals. Veteran Matt Saunders chipped in with two majors for the Dragons. New recruit Jayden Gilheany kicked two goals for the Magpies.

Best players for St George were Dominic Michalak, Cave McKnight, Richie, Saunders, Mac Winchester and Liam Taylor. Best place for Inner West Magpies were the consistent Will Deller, Elliot Harper, Ben Klemke, Nick McCormack, Willam Sabolch and Jackson Mitchell-Lane.


Pennant Hills 9.7.61

Pennant Hills
and Sydney University produced a thrilling draw at Mike Kenny Oval. Sydney Uni came from 14 points down at three quarter time, with final scores being 61 apiece.

This game ebbed and flowed dramatically. The Students were actually three goals up at half-time, then the Demons came out in the third quarter with a withering burst, kicking five goals to 0. The Students regrouped in the final stanza and managed to share the four points with the Demons in an absolutely thrilling fixture.

Key forward Nick Hey kicked six goals for Pennant Hills, with Maine Vidler (picking up where he left off in the 2024 finals series) chipping in with two majors. Newcomer Alex Witherden and Nik Dale kicked three goals each for the Students.

Best players for the Demons were Hey, representative fullback Mikey Carroll, Nick Eynaud, Lachlan Willey, Aidan Russell and impressive youngster Luka Jordaan. Best players for Sydney University were Witherden, off-season recruit Sam Barclay, Jay Tang, Vincent O’Brien, Luke Haddad and Michael Nettheim.


East Coast 10.5.65
UTS 5.17.47

East Coast Eagles defeated UTS Bats by 18 points at Bruce Purser Reserve. Dean Cleary’s men will rue kicking five goals from 22 effective scoring shots at goal.

After the Bats led by 10 points at quarter-time, East Coast piled on five goals to one in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead to the main break. The Eagles led by 11 points at three quarter time setting up a big last quarter. The Eagles kicked two goals from their only two effective shots at goal in the final stanza, whilst the Bats managed just 5 behinds.

Ben Rogers and Brendan Coxall kicked two goals each for the Eagles, whilst Thomas Charles and Blake Tabe kicked two goals each for the Bats.

Best players for the victorious Eagles were Angus Edwards (following on from his continuing his excellent preseason form), Jacob Jones, Keegan Brady, Rogers, Alexander Foxall and Harry Elbourne. Best players for the Bats where Hamish Latchford (again), Liam Gordon, Tabe, Jack Calabro, George Boyd and Louis McCormack.

East Coast Eagles
thrilled the faithful at Bruce Purser Reserve with a gutsy 12-point over Inner West Magpies.

The Eagles won the game in in the second quarter, kicking five goals to two to lead by 24 points at the main break. Despite a big last quarter comeback from the Magpies, the Eagles hung on for a valuable victory at home as they set about making the final five for the first time in many years.

Key forward Ben Currie kicked four goals for the eagles, with Marshall Poynter nabbing 2 majors for the home team. Kevin Clark was the Magpies only multiple goal kicker, kicking two goals for Inner West.

Best players for East Coast when Nathan Penna, the consistent Angus Edwards, Nick Fischer, Currie, Corey Dowle and Jacob Jones. Inner West were best served by the in-form Will Deller, Kyle Veerhuis, Leroy Veerhuis, Jye Doyle, Jonathan Bowyer and Thye Hamilton.


North Shore 23.8.146
South West Sydney

North Shore
bounced back after their first defeat in 18 months last Saturday, annihilating South West Sydney Blues by 113 points at Gore Hill Oval.

Remarkably, the Blues lead by one point at quarter time. Some stern words at quarter time led to North Shore kicking six goals in the second quarter, then they ruthlessly pulled on 14 goals after half-time to simply dismantle the Blues outfit. Of note was North Shore’s accurate goalkicking, managing 23 goals from 31 effective shots at goal.

Forward Ryan Hebron kicked six goals for North Shore, with small forward Patrick Bolger having a day out kicking 5 majors of his own. Half-forward Matt Buskariol chimed in with three majors. Consistent forward Nick Dunshea kicked two goals for the well-beaten Blues.

Best players for North Shore were Bolger, Jake Veale, Hebron, Pierce Roseby, Harry Walker and Cooper Donald. South West Sydney was best served by Matt Storey, Khy Gibbs, Josh Croft, Dunshea, Jack Baker and James Kennedy.

A revitalised UNSW-ES Bulldogs outclassed Pennant Hills at Henson Park, eventually running out 55-point winners.

Full forward Hugo Birks kicked three goals for the Bulldogs, with Thomas Longmire and Liam Ross both chiming with two majors for the victors. Pennant Hills goal kickers were Nicholas Hey with four majors and Liam Everett with the one.

The Bulldogs were best served by Jack Willis, Harrison Dyson, Oscar Peter, Owen Turner, Will Shaw and influential midfielder Sam Thorne. Pennant Hills were best served by Luka Jordaan, Cameron Mitchell, Nick Hey, Lachlan Willey, Jonathan Friend and Jordan La Lay.


Sydney Uni 15.9.99

produced a
dominant second half performance in outclassing St. George by 44 points at Olds Park.

The Dragons lead by one point at halftime, despite kicking only three goals from 14 effective shots. The Students piled on 11 goals to four in the second half in a very convincing performance away from home. Half forward Thomas Hitchens kicked four goals for Sydney University, with Max Negri, Alex Witherden, Izaac Hughes and William Gibbs all kicking two goals for the Students. Matt Saunders and Mac Winchester kicked two goals each for the Dragons.

Best players for the Students where key defender Liam Shallies, Sam Barkley, Hitchens, Witherden, Lucas Newman and Jay Tang. St George was best served by Saunders, Dominic Michalak, Winchester, Liam Tyler, Dominic Maunder and ruck Nelson Carey.


Manly Wolves 17.12.114

Manly Warringah
continued early season form with a 72-point drubbing of UTS at Waverley Oval.

The Wolves jumped out of the blocks in the first quarter kicking five goals to 1 and went on with the job in the next two quarters, leading by 81 points at the final break. Manly were kept goalless in the final quarter. but the Bats only managed two goals themselves in the final 30 minutes.

Trent Dennis-Lane and James Lugsdin kicked three goals each for the Wolves, with Byron Laws and Tom McCaffrey charming with two goals each for the dominant maroon and whites. Thomas Charles was the lone highlight for the Bats on an otherwise difficult afternoon, kicking four majors.

Best players for Manly Warringah were Lugsdin, rugged utility Ky McGrath, Taine Wright, Barry O’Connor, Tom Sheldrick and Mackenzie Allen. The Bats were best served by Liam Gordon, Charles, Henry Gosse, Oscar Doland, Anthony Eussen and Matson Waring.
