Which category?

I think Burmeister was probably the stiffest not to get drafted last year so he’s probably the best 19 year old for me. The older crop, there are a few that will need to play well for the next 6 weeks or so but we will see. I like Toby Triffett from Williamstown.

Big midfielders have all already been mentioned above but Duursma is probably the most exciting one for mine given the frame and telescopic limbs.
More curious on your 19 year olds that have impressed early doors ?

I liked Sulzberger's game yesterday, just smooth, Cooper Herbert is another coming back form injury but skippering a strong Cannons squad, I like his tenacity and versatility. Kicked a nice goal. Most will learn, im a fan of Carled El Khodr

If you want some VFL names, only need to look at Richmond VFL. Massimo Raso is only 171cm but an excitement machine. Louie Montgomery is doing some nice things as a father/son eligible for Port Adelaide (dad Brett) but can be taken if nominating for mid season draft

What are your thoughts on two cannons;

Felix Kneipp? small midfielder
Carled El Khodr? tall fwd/ undersized ruck
Kneip shit the bed under pressure but worked his way into the game.
Has some speed and ball winning ability.
Reminds me of Kane Farrell a little.
Called has no afl qualities for mine.
Lakes athleticism and height to make it in the afl for the position he plays.
Cooper Herbert is a cannon who has afl traits.

Another excellent performance from CDT as he continues his hot form to start the new Talent League season. He was more effective in the hitouts this week, regularly setting up his small brigade to break from stoppage, as well as showing his typical fantastic ground level follow up work himself. It was encouraging to see him anticipating the play and taking a few intercept marks which was one area for improvement in his game. He sat out the last 10 mins of the game with his team well on top, otherwise his stats would have been even more impressive.

yeah, fair call on both, now you mention it, Carled is the penultimate VFL state leaguer, Hudson Garoni, Ali Kefferd type. Will forge out a decent enough local foot career.

Kneipp was apart of the AFL academy I believe so wraps must be big enough on him

Elite Rucks are close to the least important players in the game. Using a top 3 pick on that type of player when we have Bryan, Draper, Gerryn + a few other talls who could get pushed through there makes no sense.
I mostly agree, and its part of the reason why I had CDT at 11 in my preseason ranks. Even with this hot start, I still think its unlikely that a team goes for a pure ruck with a top 5 pick. Hopefully he shows more key forward potential as the season progresses.

Unless you hit the jackpot and get a Gawn type

A slightly slower start to the season for Emmett although this game was more impressive than his modest stats would suggest as Emmett sat out the entirety of the fourth quarter with Oakleigh dominating the game. Emmett showed his natural forward craft, finding space and presenting into the right areas for his teammates. He took some impressive contested marks, and could have had more if it wasn't for his teammates spoiling him and a dodgy umpiring decision on the near wing. It feels like it's only a matter of time before Louis has a huge game to remind everyone of his talent.

Josh Lindsay put together another solid performance for the Falcons although his role in game continues to be a watch. Like last week he started in the middle and struggled both to impact at stoppage and find the time and space to maximise his lazer of a left boot. He was moved to his more customary half back role in the second half and started to dictate play with some superb playmaking including one elite dart into the corridor that led to a goal for his team. But just when we thought that the move onball might have been abandoned after only a game and half, Lindsay was back on ball for the final 10 minutes of the game.

I reckon he projects as a forward/ruck.

If we grabbed him it would be to pair with Caddy up forward long term and he is our relief ruck.

Actually, on second thoughts

Visentini & Gerryn were both taken in past two drafts so probably not a huge need. (forward / ruck)

Sharp started this game like he played last week, looking a little hesitant and only managing to find scrappy, relatively ineffective possessions. Either he or the coaching staff seemed make an adjustment in the third term as he was pushing higher up the ground almost as an extra midfielder and suddenly he was cracking into the contest and stoppage with decisive and powerful movements, extracting the footy and setting up his teammates on the outside.

It's time that we saw Sharp get some run as a primary onballer to maximise his talents.

This is why I asked how they were projecting, because I do value an elite ruckman. Probably worth considering the traits they have, because all rucks aren't the same, but when they're elite you do have another goal kicking tall forward for the oppo to worry about, or a tall who can play like an extra midfielder, on top of the confidence that your own mids will get first service. That's always preferable to carrying a ruck. Gawn, TDK, Xerri, Grundy from 3 or 4 years ago. Happy to add one of those ruck types.

Agreed. If he had a forward game that could see him develop into a Thilthorpe you'd have to consider it. But those extra midfielder rucks just don't translate into more effective systems. Fort, Cameron, Stanley, Gawn, Nank, Lycett, Roughead, Hale, Bailey, Mumford, Ottens, Jolly. That's your premiership rucks going back to 2010. Some very good players in there but Gawn is the only one worthy of a really high draft pick.

The best ruck in the comp is TDK and Carlton have dropped off considerably while he's starring and were far better when average Pittonet was their number 1. Xerri being the other one and North are still struggling big time.

A quieter performance this week from Willem, but he still played his role and impacted the contest in a good win for his Power team. He started deep forward this week and might have spent a bit more time there than on the ball. His cracked in hard in contested situations and applied strong defensive pressure as always, the main concern again was his disposal efficiency which he struggled with, although once again it was a very windy day which made things difficult.

Archie Ludowyke put in an excellent performance and booted the winning goal in a fun back and forth, end to end contest. His hands were mostly assured, and he burned off his opponent to create space on the lead a number of times. What might have been most impressive were his excellent pressure efforts throughout the game that caused fumbles and turnovers.

I just don’t think classical rucks have that much of an impact on a game, hence if you can get a workhorse ruck that won’t win you a game, but also won’t lose you a game then you’ve got a solid option in a premiership. Xerri might be top 3 ruck atm but he’s still a classical work horse ruck. Rucks who are more than that are the ones who have value. Darcy and Thilthorpe were thought to project as long term rucks instead of being dominate key forwards. Duff tytler I think also projects as a player who can spend more time in the forward line with some relief ruck work.

Ollie did some fantastic things in this game and was his team's best player on the day. His combination of size and agility, along with the balance to change direction on a dime allows him to navigate traffic in contested situations and get from inside to outside as proficiently as anyone in this draft pool. He excels at gaining territory for his team, as shown by his 10 inside 50s in this game.

Another excellent performance from Sweid this week as he continues to get Essendon supporters excited. His contested work was a feature this week, he might not be the tallest on the park, but he packs some power and physicality in his frame. We also got to see him rotating onto a forward flank, a position he played through the entirety of the 4th quarter with the Cannons well on top.

EXCITING BOMBERS DRAFT SCENARIO

A shrewd future trade has already put Essendon in a juicy draft position, with four picks in the first two rounds.

But the Bombers’ draft stocks are strengthening by the week, with two Next Generation Academy prospects making a scintillating start to their 2025 campaigns.

Hussien El Achkar and Adam Sweid have recruiters alert after two impressive performances for the Calder Cannons.
After booting 4.2 from 15 disposals against Oakleigh in Round 1, El Achkar backed it up with 3.1 from 10 touches against the Tasmania Devils. His seven-goal tally ranks second in the competition, albeit of a small two-game sample size.

A 171cm small forward, El Achkar is speedy and powerful, while his ability to read the ball off hands and get into the right attacking positions at the right time is noteworthy.

Meanwhile, Sweid has caught the eye of scouts playing in a midfield-forward role after missing all his bottom-age year in the Coates Talent League recovering from an ACL rupture.

After booting 2.0 from 25 disposals in Round 1, Sweid (175cm) impressed with his pressure and cleanliness at the coalface against the Devils, finishing with 1.0 from 26 disposals, a game-high seven tackles, five clearances and four inside 50s.

One recruiter last week told foxfooty.com.au that Sweid just “looked like an AFL player” during his strong outing against the Chargers.
El Achkar is viewed by some scouts as being on the cusp of the first round, while Sweid could join him in that category should he continue his positive trajectory.

It’s an exciting overall prospect for Essendon fans later this year, considering they could secure their two top NGA prospects as well as two players at the top-end of the pool.

Essendon last year parted with its natural first-rounder (Pick 9) to avoid any concerns the selection would be swallowed up by a bid on its star Next Generation Academy prospect Isaac Kako. In return, Melbourne gave the Bombers an array of picks from the second to fourth rounds – which helped them match the eventual Pick 13 bid on Kako – and its own future first-rounder.

With the Demons 0-4 prior to Round 5, it means Essendon at this stage holds Pick 2 in the draft as well as its own natural first-rounder, which is currently Pick 5.

The Bombers also hold two second-rounders: Their own natural selection (currently Pick 25) and St Kilda’s second-rounder (Pick 30) as the Saints last year traded on draft night to help them secure WA midfielder Hugh Boxshall.

That latter trade puts the Bombers in a strong position ahead of the trade period and draft.

Looks like Sweid is not going to be such a late pick. Could be a very smart move by Rosa last year.
